Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Unitarian, 1895, Vol. 10 If there is anything which hitherto has been regarded as indisputably the supreme factor in human progress, the distinguish ing characteristic of man over the lower animals, and the department of our being on whose evolution nature is now coneen trating all its energies, it is his intellectual endowment. Literature is forever singing the praises of man's lordly mind and godlike reason. The whole immense dis tance between civilization and savagery is supposed to be due to the difference there is between their natural mental gifts. And, while the Church is regarded as a valuable help in keeping a person, after he has been trained up, from going to the had, our courses of study in school and college, and our taxes and enthusiasm for popular edu cation, are based almost entirely on the idea that the foremost requisite for making a boy a good citizen and a valuable member of society is to make him a good scholar. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Unitarian Review, 1888, Vol. 30 It must, nevertheless, be admitted that in some minds religious hopes and aspirations remain very feeble and weak. There is a vast difference in the religious and moral, as there is in the artistic and scientific endowment of men. There are multitudes who seem incapable of receiv ing scientific truth, of shaking off superstition and belief in magic. There are multitudes apparently incapable of ap preciating beauty, whether in form, in color, or in tone. In like manner there are multitudes who appear unable to appreciate a high morality or to grasp firmly spiritual truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Unitarian Review and Religious Magazine, Vol. 26: July, 1886 In making this book, the American Unitarian Association has done a good work. It has added another noble volume to the literature of the Liberal Faith. We heartily recommend it to the attention of teachers of the older classes in our Sunday-schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pacific Unitarian, Vol. 18: November, 1909 to October, 1910 An earnest contributor to the Pacific Methodist Advocate, after a few words of introduction about Dr. Eliot's New Religion, says: How very strange that a thing called man should in this year of our Lord attempt to dethrone the Son of God, Jesus Christ, and rob him of the 'glory he had before the world was.' I think, as this is a day of prayer for the conversion of the world, a day should be set apart for a change in Eliot's heart and the change of every one who dares to endorse his bold infidel and arrogant views, or to take them out of this world. The Lord have mercy on such an old educated sinner and all who endorse him in whole or in part. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis A History of the Unitarians and the Universalists in the United States, Vol. 10 (Classic Reprint) by : Joseph Henry Allen

This book was released on 2019-01-06 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Unitarians and the Universalists in the United States, Vol. 10 The task attempted here is, first, to give, within the limits assigned, a history of the religious movement known as Unitarian sufficiently broad and complete for the general reader; and second, to furnish a list of authorities adequate for the uses of the special student. The latter Object, it is hoped, has been effected by ample references in the margin. A formal bibliography, partie ularly of individual lives, which are very numerous, might be extended to any length, and might hardly justify the space it would require. Besides, the value of this sketch, such as it is, depends - in the latter part especially - on its being a record of personal recollections, judgments, or impressions, left by near sixty years during which I have been a student or observer, and more than fifty while I have been, in a way, a laborer, in this field. In what is said of the incidents and actors since the movement of thought among us commonly dated between 1835 and 1840, every name is one I recall, gratefully, as that of a teacher, associate, or friend. Most of these are passed away. Of the living, only Furness and Martineau have been included; and these, in their advanced and venerated old age, already belong to history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Unitarian Review and Religious Magazine, 1874, Vol. 1 Deeper than that class of facts to which I have alluded, lies the sense of sympathy with the lives and actions of others, however far we may be from the ability to reproduce them. This relation Emerson has happily expressed in the opening paragraph of his essay on history. Though the words are fortunately familiar, they are so apt to our present needs that I will quote them: There is one mind, common to all individual men. Every man is an inlet12 Mysticism. [mar.
