Mitchell This catalogue embraces the first portion of the collection of engraved portraits of Gen. George Washington gathered by the Hon. Jas. T. Mitchell, Chief Justice of Pennsylvania, and includes only the portraits described by, or such as would have been described by, the late Mr. Wm. S. Baker in his work on the Engraved Portraits of Washington. When I say would have been, I mean that many in this collection are so rare that Mr. Baker had not the good fortune, in his researches, to come across them, otherwise they would have been included in his book. After mature consideration, I decided to fall back and build on the old foundation, that is, to describe the portraits by the excellent rule laid down by Mr. Baker in his admirable work, which is best understood by col lectors, being aware that those who are possessed of the exclusive Grolier Club book can readily identify the portraits mentioned in that book by the Baker numbers herein given. It will be well to state, whilst mentioning the Grolier Club book, that that publication owes much of its excellence and completeness to the courtesy of Justice Mitchell in allowing Mr. Hart the use of his collection in compiling the same, as many of the rarer items men tioned in it are the only impressions known, and are in this collection. In describing the portraits, we have tried to follow the various forms of letters used in the titles of the prints, which will explain the lack of uniformity in lettering of the titles in this catalogue. These tropes or nicknames apparently reflect the freedom and open-armed welcome that the United States of America offers. However, the chronicles of history do not complement that image. These historical happenings have not often been brought into the focus of Modernist literary criticism, though their existence in the record is clear. This book aims to discuss these chronicles, displaying in great detail the underpinnings and subtle references of racism and xenophobia embedded so deeply in both fictional and real personas, whether they are characters, writers, legislators, or the common people. In the main chapters, literary works are dissected so as to underline the intolerance hidden behind words of righteousness and blind trust, as if such is the norm. Though history is taught, it is not so thoroughly examined. To our misfortune, we naively think that bigoted ideas are not a thing we could become afflicted with. They are antiques from the past – yet they possessed many hundreds of people and they surround us still. Since we’ve experienced very little change, it seems discipline is necessary to truly attempt to be rid of these ideas.

Book excerpt: In his best-selling travel memoir, The Innocents Abroad, Mark Twain punningly refers to the black man who introduces him to Venetian Renaissance painting as a “contraband guide,” a term coined to describe fugitive slaves who assisted Union armies during the Civil War. By means of this and similar case studies, Paul H. D. Kaplan documents the ways in which American cultural encounters with Europe and its venerable artistic traditions influenced nineteenth-century concepts of race in the United States. Americans of the Civil War era were struck by the presence of people of color in European art and society, and American artists and authors, both black and white, adapted and transformed European visual material to respond to the particular struggles over the identity of African Americans. Taking up the work of both well- and lesser-known artists and writers—such as the travel writings of Mark Twain and William Dean Howells, the paintings of German American Emanuel Leutze, the epistolary exchange between John Ruskin and Charles Eliot Norton, newspaper essays written by Frederick Douglass and William J. Wilson, and the sculpture of freed slave Eugène Warburg—Kaplan lays bare how racial attitudes expressed in mid-nineteenth-century American art were deeply inflected by European traditions.
