Of this translation we have departed from our original intention of issuing the work in two volumes, and are publishing these Letters of St. Paul to the Churches without waiting to complete our version of the remainder of the New Testament. This portion of the translation has been made on exactly the same principles as the earlier portion. But our statement in the Preface to Part I., that no purely literal rendering can ever adequately represent the thoughts conveyed in the idioms of another language, applies with even greater force to the involved and often unfinished sentences of these Letters than it does to the simple narratives of the Gospels and the Acts. While, therefore, this version is a translation, and not a para phrase, we have felt bound to use as much freedom of rendering as is consistent with fidelity to the true sense of the original Greek.
