Book excerpt: The "Lexicon Grammaticorum" is a comprehensive reference book that provides information on the lives and work of all scholars and thinkers throughout the world who have concerned themselves down the ages with the study and description of language. The "Lexicon" contains articles on more than 1,500 representatives of the world's linguistic traditions, written by 422 authors from 27 countries. Generally, an article consists of a biography, an abstract of the linguist's achievements, including his or her influence, and a two-part bibliography, listing first his or her writings, then those about him or her. Whenever possible, the references are complete; where the works are two numerous for them all to be listed, as is often the case with more recent linguists, only the main titles appear, with references to already existing bibliographies. The aim of the "Lexicon" is twofold: namely to provide access to the history of linguistics through its most important representatives and to combine the world's diverse linguistic traditions in one book, thus showing what is individual and is universal in human thought about language.

Book Synopsis The Bible and Medieval Culture by : W. Lourdaux
Download or read book The Bible and Medieval Culture written by W. Lourdaux and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 1979 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From May 16th to 19th 1977, philologist, historians, sociologists, philosophers and theologians gathered in Louvain, to attend the Vllth International Colloquium organized by the 'Instituut voor Middeleeuwse Studies' of the 'Katholieke Universiteit te Leuven', to discuss and investigate the influence of the Bible on medieval culture. It is indisputable that medieval society in its various aspects was deeply penetrated and strongly influenced by the Bible. Many important studies have already been published on this subject, but the organizers of the Colloquium recognized that much further work was still required, and focussed attention on three fundamental problems, to which the attention of participants was directed. Firstly, some centuries passed before the Bible was translated into vernacular languages, as a result of the Church's policy that the Bible should only be read in one of the 'sacred languages' - Hebrew, Greek or Latin. The vulgate version for Western christendom was St Jerome's Latin translation, but a stimulus and demand gradually grew for vernacular translations. In the course of the 9th century, the Frankish Otfrid of Weissenburg raised the significant question whether the language of the Franks was indeed to trivial or inferior that it was worthless or useless for speaking to God. But the Church was reluctant to permit the Bible to be translated into the common tongues, through fear of the confusion and uncertainty which might result for uneducated people. Nevertheless, and secondly, in spite of many obstacles, such translations in fact appeared, principally in German, Anglo-Saxon, French and Dutch. And thirtly, in consequence of these developments, the Bible impacted a specific outlook to medieval society, and the translators recorded in their versions the contemporary customs and habits of their people. The Bible translations created a new vocabulary, and the translators used their own language and idioms to render the Bible stories more lively and comprehensible. The various contributions to the International Colloquium dealt with these three themes, as well as other aspects of medieval life on which the Bible left its mark.
Book Synopsis The Church and Vernacular Literature in Medieval France by : Dorothea Kullmann
Download or read book The Church and Vernacular Literature in Medieval France written by Dorothea Kullmann and published by PIMS. This book was released on 2009 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid rise of vernacular literature in medieval France, within a culture which continued to acknowledge Latin as its vehicular language, is a fact that literary historians tend too easily to take for granted. Within a relatively short period, stretching roughly from the end of the eleventh century to the thirteenth century, French and Occitan literatures acquired an output and a level of sophistication that made them the leading models for other European literatures. New genres and new subject matters appear one after the other; new ideologies (such as the concept of love developed by the troubadours) are first expressed in vernacular creations; and even learned Latin authors soon feel obliged to take notice of these developments. Should we describe this astonishing chapter of cultural history as the development of a 'lay', or 'profane', literature alongside a Church-dominated learned and religious one, or as the emancipation of vernacular literature from the tutorship of the Church? Is the borderline between 'lay' and 'religious' texts and genres really as clear-cut as some literary histories would make us believe? How then did these new genres of written literature come into being in a culture in which the Church held the monopoly on education, including training in writing? Did the Church as an institution play any role in the birth and expansion of vernacular literature? In the present volume, specialists from the disciplines of linguistics, literature, history and musicology address the various aspects of this complex of questions. The examples studied here are witnesses not only to a constant interaction between lay and religious cultures but also to the productive tension that resulted from the particular situation of the Church in medieval France.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English summary: Marguerite Poretes Mirror of Simple Souls is an exceptional work of medieval literature, a fundamental text of Western mysticism written by woman condemned to the stake for her work. The articles collected in this volume bring new light to Marguerites political and social horizons, her theological and literary culture. Three articles offer new interpretations of her trial, one offers critical corrections to the scholarly edition of her text, while others examine the circulation and readership of Mirror to better understand its impact.

Book Synopsis Historical Dictionary of Choral Music by : Melvin P. Unger
Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Choral Music written by Melvin P. Unger and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2010-06-17 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human voice an incredibly beautiful and expressive instrument, and when multiple voices are unified in tone and purpose a powerful statement is realized. No wonder people have always wanted to sing in a communal context-a desire apparently stemming from a deeply rooted human instinct. Consequently, choral performance has often been related historically to human rituals and ceremonies, especially rites of a religious nature. This Historical Dictionary of Choral Music examines choral music and practice in the Western world from the Medieval era to the 21st century, focusing mostly on familiar figures like Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, and Britten. But its scope is considerably broader, and it includes all sorts of music-religious, secular, and popular-from sources throughout the world. It contains a chronology, an introduction, a bibliography, and more than 1,000 cross-referenced dictionary entries on important composers, genres, conductors, institutions, styles, and technical terms of choral music.
