Book excerpt: The Turning Aside is about stepping out of our routines--like Moses turning from tending sheep, like a certain man selling his everything to buy a field--to take time to consider the ways of God in the company of some of the finest poets of our time. Turn aside with such established poets as Wendell Berry, Les Murray, Luci Shaw, Elizabeth Jennings, Richard Wilbur, Dana Gioia, and Christian Wiman--and respond to their invitation for us to muse along with them. Walk with poets from various parts of the planet, even though some of them are less known, whose words have been carefully crafted to encourage us in our turning aside. The Turning Aside is a collection of Christian poetry from dozens of the most spiritually insightful poetic voices of recent years. It is a book I have long dreamed of compiling, and it has grown beyond my mere imagining in its fulfillment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You walk into a room, determined not to get angry and upset again. And yet you do. You prayed away your guilt from something you did last week, or last year, or a decade ago -- only to have the regret and shame flood in one day out of nowhere. After practicing patience or kindness for years, you lose it all, in a single conversation. Where is the permanency in Christian regeneration? Why are our choices easier to make than to maintain? If these experiences or questions describe your walk as a Christian, this book is for you. Third in a series, Turning Aside to See continues the day-by-day journey that has been established in Driving into the Dawn and Yielding to Wonder. Each two-page chapter begins with a proverb. Sometimes Hofer agrees with its conventional wisdom, applying it in some way to Christian experience. At other times she shows how Christianity contradicts the proverb, freeing us from worldly assumptions and logic. Hofer's first book, Power of Yielding, described her dramatic conversion experience and the lifetime pilgrimage that it initiated. She continues to read widely, journeying on, searching for similar spiritual awakenings and essential Christian truths. Her writing draws you into a relationship with the Lord that has thrived for over twenty years. Are you ready to turn aside to see? About the Author Patricia Hofer ended her high school teaching career in the early 1980s and found her way to Boston for a job in publishing. Besides learning to research and edit, she eventually had several articles published. After returning to Arizona, she taught freshman English and technical writing at Glendale Community College. Hofer is now retired and living in the lovely mountain town of Payson, Arizona. She is currently at work on her fifth book.

This book was released on 1974 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multivolume work is still proving to be as fundamental to Old Testament studies as its companion set, the Kittel-Friedrich Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, has been to New Testament studies. Beginning with father, and continuing through the alphabet, the TDOT volumes present in-depth discussions of the key Hebrew and Aramaic words in the Old Testament. Leading scholars of various religious traditions (including Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Reformed, Anglican, Greek Orthodox, and Jewish) and from many parts of the world (Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States) have been carefully selected for each article by editors Botterweck, Ringgren, and Fabry and their consultants, George W. Anderson, Henri Cazelles, David Noel Freedman, Shemaryahu Talmon, and Gerhard Wallis. The intention of the writers is to concentrate on meaning, starting from the more general, everyday senses and building to an understanding of theologically significant concepts. To avoid artificially restricting the focus of the articles, TDOT considers under each keyword the larger groups of words that are related linguistically or semantically. The lexical work includes detailed surveys of a word s occurrences, not only in biblical material but also in other ancient Near Eastern writings. Sumerian, Akkadian, Egyptian, Ethiopic, Ugaritic, and Northwest Semitic sources are surveyed, among others, as well as the Qumran texts and the Septuagint; and in cultures where no cognate word exists, the authors often consider cognate ideas. TDOT s emphasis, though, is on Hebrew terminology and on biblical usage. The contributors employ philology as well as form-critical and traditio-historical methods, with the aim of understanding the religious statements in the Old Testament. Extensive bibliographical information adds to the value of this reference work. This English edition attempts to serve the needs of Old Testament students without the linguistic background of more advanced scholars; it does so, however, without sacrificing the needs of the latter. Ancient scripts (Hebrew, Greek, etc.) are regularly transliterated in a readable way, and meanings of foreign words are given in many cases where the meanings might be obvious to advanced scholars. Where the Hebrew text versification differs from that of English Bibles, the English verse appears in parentheses. Such features will help all earnest students of the Bible to avail themselves of the manifold theological insights contained in this monumental work.

Book excerpt: "Each of these poems makes you want to descend to its heart and discover the precious metal there. D. S. Martin knows how to evoke the mystery that lies beneath the relationships we have with ourselves, each other, and God. This is skillful and probing poetry." - Luci Shaw; author of What the Light Was Like Praise for So the Moon Would Not Be Swallowed (Award of Merit-2008-The Word Guild) "This little chapbook took me by surprise, with poem after poem shocking with rattling expectations for the reader in a way at least somewhat mimetic of the harrowing circumstances described. The final three lines of 'Good Housekeeping' will serve as an example of poems that are disturbing, strong, taut. By keeping the collection to one cycle of poems, the poet has left us wanting more--much more. The historic realities that are underlying add a dimension of gravitas, as does the fact that these stories continue through the decades since. This is strong writing with a distinctive voice." -Maxine Hancock, author and professor at Regent College, Vancouver "My only regret about this collection was that it wasn't longer." -Violet Nesdoly, Utmost Christian Writers "This is what poetry can do: take volumes of letters and locate the kernels, distil years of details with subtlety and a tolerance for ambiguity, stay faithful to the historical record and retell a compelling story." -Hannah Main-van der Kamp, in Faith Today; author of According to Loon Bay

Everything that the text has to offer can only be understood and appreciated to the full, and its interpretation can only lay claim to full validity by means of an integral view. Therefore the author has developed a textual model which regards and covers the composition of the Samuel books as a hierarchy of twelve levels. This volume bridges the gap between volume I and II. Throne and City carries on the work according to the principles of a sound and independent narratology. It differentiates II Sam. 2-5:5 (Act IX) and 5:6-18 (Act X) as the two final phases of David’s long march to pow

Book excerpt: The books of the twelve Minor Prophets are some of the least studied by Christians today, but they contain some of the great themes of Scripture, such as God's mercy and judgment, His covenant with Israel, the day of the Lord, and the coming of the Messiah. Arguing for a canonical unity that recognizes the Minor Prophets as one cohesive composition, Michael Shepherd explains the historical meaning of each verse of the twelve books and also provides guidance for application and preaching. Pastors, teachers, and serious students of Scripture will find a wealth of insights for understanding the Minor Prophets. - from publisher.

Book excerpt: Thoughts for the Soul is filled with personal stories and life observations aimed at encouraging all with the knowledge that God can be heard and seen in the seemingly insignificant happenings of day-to-day life. The entertaining tales found within its pages are comfortingly human, and yet they open our eyes to God’s desire to reveal Himself and His astonishing love for us every day. Though written by a pastor to his congregation, these stories are offered to all who have even a whisper of interest in how God relates to us. Each story closes with the encouragement that Pastor David is with you in your pursuit of a meaningful spirituality. He writes not as one who has all the answers but as a fellow explorer, each day trying to see and hear from God concerning the good He has planned for us.
