Book excerpt: Social relationships are often strongly hinged on the presence of trust between people, and as such can change depending on the behavior of those within the trust relationship. Interactions with new people and even well-known people are assessed based on the perception of the other's trustworthiness. This study explores the use of a series of Prisoner's Dilemma styled games where participants were able to pass along trust assessments about their partner to inform others about the person's trustworthiness. These reports were then swapped with false reports that either indicated a person as being either not at all trustworthy or very trustworthy. The study found that while low false trust assessments caused participants to report lower levels of trustworthiness both before and after the trust game thanthose who recieved high false trust assessments, it did not alter how cooperative participants were willing to be during the game. Participants who were more cooperative also achieved greater point totals from the trust game than those who exhibited more self-regarding behavior.
