Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True Object of Life The names of several other authors might be added to this list, but I would specially include that of Lord Bacon, as one apparently under a similar religious restraint, because, in his famous work, Novum Organum, so closely in touch with Combe's progressive philosophy whilst denouncing religious Opposition to Science, he gives as a reason for not pro pounding a more universal or complete theory, that the time does not seem yet to have arrived for so doing, although he admits that here and there, and on certain Special subjects. The tribute to those who died young is tribute to the youth which they never lived to lose - ih part, no doubt, objective, but in part also subjective, and prompted by the thought expressed in that line of Thackeray: Oh, the brave days, when we were twenty-one! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Meaning and Value of Life Has human life any meaning and value? In asking this question we are under no illusion. We know that we cannot pose to-day as the possessors of a truth which we have but to unfold. The question confronts us as a problem that is still unsolved, whilst we may not renounce the attempt to solve it. That our modern era lacks all assurance in regard to its solution is a point we shall have to establish more in detail. But no subtlety of argument is needed to Show that such assurance is to us indispensable. We are subject to manifold impressions, beset by endless problems, and it is hard to discern amid the maze any unity of meaning or purpose. Life, moreover, is no mere idle game; it requires toil and labour, renunciation and sacrifice. Is it worth the. Toil, worth the labour? Can the good of the whole compensate for all partial risks and losses? Can it justify us in affirming that life is worth the living The question has more than a speculative interest; for unless faith in some lofty ideal infuse zest and gladness into every department. Book excerpt: Excerpt from True to the Life, Vol. 1 of 3 Before this could be reached, a better class of cottage intervened - a cottage important in the dignity of outbuildings, of sheds for carts, sheds for coals and wood, a stable containing an old blind pony, and a blacksmith's forge. This cottage, on the side next to the road, was adorned by a sign, which, raised high on two posts, creaked in the wind, and represented the family arms of the owner of The Holmes; consisting of an elephant's head, argent, and plain coloured gules, with two eagles regardant as supporters, which twisted their necks painfully, and seemed eager to abandon their constrained position: the motto, Occurrent 7231663. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ground and Goal of Human Life The work contained in the following expresses, as it were, a treaty of peace between the forces of Individualism here and those of scientifico-social thought there. To one who has followed the parallel histories of egoism militant on the one side and naturalism triumphant on the other, the present situation appears full of promise for a future understanding between man and the things and persons around him. For the comprehension of this situation, one can do no better than to conduct an analytical review of the way in which the effort toward selfhood has expressed itself; just such a progressive delineation of individualism has engrossed the first two parts of the present work. The third, which is the progressive portion of the book, seeks to show in just what way man may re-relate his mind to nature, in what corresponding manner the individual may seek new repose in the social order. New years bring new problems with them; and, when the times are as suggestive as those of the new peace, it becomes imperative that one should cast about for new ideals. To the restricted number of individuals who are tempted to persist in the old anarchism of individualism in its ante-bellum days, it may be suggested that newer, deeper types of nationalism may offer to such liberals something like the social environment which their nature seems to demand. Those who before the war felt themselves superfluous may come to the realization that even the most delicious, the most dissatisfied personality may find his place in the political world-order. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life: Its Nature, Varieties, and Phenomena The object of this work is two-fold. First, it is proposed to give a popular account of the phenomena which indicate the presence of that mysterious, sustaining force we denominate Life, or Vitality, and of the laws which appear to govern their mani festation; secondly, will be considered those Spiritual, or Emo tional and Intellectual States, which collectively constitute the essential history of our temporal lives, rendering existence either pleasurable or painful. The inquiry will thus embrace all the most interesting and instructive subjects alike of physiology and psychology: the constitution and functions of the bodies in which we dwell; the delights which attend the exercise of the intellect and the affections; the glory and loveliness of the works of God, will all come under notice, and receive their fitting meed of illus tration. Especially will the practical value and interest of life be pointed out; the unity and fine symmetry of the True, the Beautiful, and the Good; the poetry of common things, and the intimate dependence of the whole upon Him in whom we live, and move, and have our being. Man, as the noblest recipi ent, upon earth, of the divine life, will naturally be the principal object of consideration; not, however, the only one. Seeing that he is the Archetype of the entire system of living things. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
