And I maintain that the proper place for this motion to appear is among the regulations of the Convention. Book excerpt: "Margarot was one of the 'Scottish Martyrs' whose calls for parliamentary reform led to the sedition trials which took place in 1793-94. Together with Joseph Gerrard, Margarot was a delegate to the 1793 'British Convention of the Societies of the Friends of the People' held at Edinburgh. Found guilty of sedition, he was sentenced to fourteen years transportation to Botany Bay, where he mingled with radical convicts and United Irishmen and at the same time acted as an informant to Governor King. He was subsequently sent in turn to Norfolk Island, Van Dieman's Land, and Newcastle, arriving back in England in 1810"--D & E Lake bookseller's description

Book excerpt: A history of the common people and the Industrial Revolution: “A true masterpiece” and one of the Modern Library’s 100 Best Nonfiction Books of the twentieth century (Tribune). During the formative years of the Industrial Revolution, English workers and artisans claimed a place in society that would shape the following centuries. But the capitalist elite did not form the working class—the workers shaped their own creations, developing a shared identity in the process. Despite their lack of power and the indignity forced upon them by the upper classes, the working class emerged as England’s greatest cultural and political force. Crucial to contemporary trends in all aspects of society, at the turn of the nineteenth century, these workers united into the class that we recognize all across the Western world today. E. P. Thompson’s magnum opus, The Making of the English Working Class defined early twentieth-century English social and economic history, leading many to consider him Britain’s greatest postwar historian. Its publication in 1963 was highly controversial in academia, but the work has become a seminal text on the history of the working class. It remains incredibly relevant to the social and economic issues of current times, with the Guardian saying upon the book’s fiftieth anniversary that it “continues to delight and inspire new readers.”

Thirteen plates. Reprint available April 2005 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. ISBN 1-58477-496-7. Cloth. $85. * Gray [1874-1950] draws on "anecdotes and contemporary testimony" to illuminate the personalities of Kames, Monboddo, Gardenstone, Braxfield, Hailes, Eskgrove, Balmuto, Newton, Hermand, Eldin, Jeffrey and Cockburn. As he states in the preface, he attempts "to show what manner of men those old Scots jurisconsults were--to present a conspectus of their philosophy of life. Accordingly, much space is devoted to setting forth their ideas and ideals, to recording their habits, their daily walk and conversation, their studies, their recreation, their manner of comporting themselves in the various relationships of life. In short, every effort has been made to shed as much light as possible upon their morals and their manners, their wit and their wisdom" (vi). A pleasure to read, this book contains a good deal of information that is not available elsewhere.
