Download or read book Identity Papers written by Helene Meyers and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identity Papers argues that contemporary Jewish American literature revises our understanding of Jewishness and Jewish difference. Moving beyond the reductive labeling of texts and authors as "too Jewish" or "not Jewish enough," and focusing instead on narratives that portray Jewish regeneration through feminist Orthodoxy, queerness, off-whiteness, and intermarriage, Helene Meyers resists a lachrymose view of contemporary Jewish American life. She argues that such gendered, sexed, and raced debates about Jewish identity become opportunities rather than crises, signs of creative potential rather than symptoms of assimilation and deracination. Thus, feminist debates within Orthodoxy are allied to Jewish continuity by Rebecca Goldstein, Allegra Goodman, and Tova Mirvis; the geography of Jewish identity is racialized by Alfred Uhry, Tony Kushner, and Philip Roth; and the works of Jyl Lynn Felman, Judith Katz, Lev Raphael, and Michael Lowenthal queer the Jewish family as they reveal homophobia to be an abomination. Even as Identity Papers expands Jewish literary horizons and offers much-needed alternatives to the culture wars between liberal and traditional Jews, it argues that Jewish difference productively troubles dominant narratives of feminist, queer, and whiteness studies. Meyers demonstrates that the evolving Jewish American literary renaissance is anything but provincial; rather, it is engaged with categories of difference central to contemporary academic discourses and our national life.

Book excerpt: Tzippy Goldman was born for marriage. She and her mother had always assumed she’d graduate high school, be set up with the right boy, and have a beautiful wedding with white lace and pareve vanilla cream frosting. But at twenty-two, Tzippy’s fast approaching spinsterhood. She dreams of escape; instead, she leaves for a year in Jerusalem. There she meets–re-meets–Baruch, the son of her mother’s college roommate. When Tzippy last saw him, his name was Bryan and he wore a Yankees-logo yarmulke. Now he has adopted the black hat of the ultra-orthodox, the tradition in which Tzippy was raised. Twelve weeks later, they’re engaged...and discovering that desire and tradition, devotion and individuality aren’t the easiest balance. Hilarious, compassionate, and tremendously insightful, The Outside World illuminates an insular community, marvelously depicting that complicated blend of faith, love, and family otherwise known as life in a modern world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mystery of You is an exciting and thought-provoking look at ourselves and how we live our lives. It contains a rich tapestry of ideas, beliefs and experiences. It challenges the reader in many ways by confronting everyday issues, but always remaining interesting and easy to read. Many questions are discussed, for example: - What is happening to humanity?- What kind of individuals and communities are we producing?- What have morality and ethics got to do with everyday living?- Where can we find some clues that will give us a head start in our own journey through the maze of living? The first part of the book is written by Ron Goldschlager, a successful businessman and communal identity who cares deeply about humanity and our world. The second part is a series of articles by Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz, a philosopher, scholar, educator, advisor to many high-profile international leaders and prolific writer of over 70 books. Accompanying and complementing the text is a wonderful collection of paintings by Victor Majzner, some produced especially for this work. They are inspiring and colourful illustrations of the important themes in this book. In a positive and easy-to-digest manner, this book explores Jewish thought and belief, and offers a practical and creative perspective on eternal issues. It consists of seven chapters: Ageing; Belief and Bureaucracy; Continuity; Behaviour; Water and Life with Numbers; This is About Happiness; Science or Religion and Religion or Science.

Book Synopsis Truth in Numbers by : Reuven Wolfeld
Download or read book Truth in Numbers written by Reuven Wolfeld and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Truth in Numbers attempts to answer why Genesis is the first book of the Bible (as opposed to one of the other books being first) as well as to reveal along the way insights into the plan of creation. These insights are found through use of the ancient art of numerical interpretation (gematria), as well as the use of interpretation of secrets (Kabbalah). Many well known Jewish sources are quoted throughout this book. It is laid out in a portion-by-portion fashion going through the book of Genesis. This is so that the reader can learn and discuss a part of a particular portion (parashah) of Genesis, without having to read the whole work.

Book Synopsis Meera Popkins Judaea Pop by : Meera Popkin
Download or read book Meera Popkins Judaea Pop written by Meera Popkin and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-10-28 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One day, Meera sat on her sofa with a prayer book and a tape recorder. She pushed the record button, and fifteen to twenty minutes later, she had recorded fourteen songs just by improvising. She realized that she had composed new liturgical melodies for any person that would want to pray using new modern tunes. She contacted William Rowe, and he transcribed the prayers from tape to paper. He transcribed one with words and one without words. These songs are transformational prayers that bring you from the olive branch with the dove (symbolizing peace) through to fruition where the doves are, in the end, enveloped in peace, standing proud on the carving, and flying away, promoting the power of prayer. Anyone is invited to bring these prayers to life and enjoy a journey into their own peace, just like the dove.

Book excerpt: The year 2006 brings new challenges to Judaism. The obvious external threat is due to new-born anti-Semitism in the world, and the threat of terrorism-and the threat of war. The internal threat to Judaism is the fact that our children are not educated well in religious schools. My book titled Coming of Age is about lack of faith for Jewish children schooled in after-secular school Hebrew programs. Often-times these Hebrew Schools are nothing but Bar-Mitzvah "Mills" who turn children away from the faith, rather than toward it. It has many lessons for Jewish families of today. The main lesson is that Judaic education must be changed to better motivate Jewish children. THIS IS NOT NECESSARILY ONLY FOR JEWISH PARENTS-CHILDREN TODAY ARE NOT LEARNING RELIGION FOR MOST RELIGIONS! FOR COMING OF AGE: THERE IS NO OTHER SUCH BOOK ON THE MARKET! A "How-to" book on the religious ceremony of "Bar-and-Bat-Mitzvah" that can be planned at home (it is, after all, a tradition) that is used to motivate children; give them Jewish identity and allows parents the ability to join with their child in formulating this special service.
