Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Treatment of the Insane We find the insane very much scattered - some in private families, some in almshouses and others in hospitals 5 some faring well, and others suffering badly in body, and worse in mind. Passing by all cases in private families and private institutions, the almshouse and hospital constitute almost the only recepta cles for this class. These almshouses may be located in city, county or town, may be large or small, but such are the condi tion, management, surroundings, and character of the inmates of many of them that these establishments are generally unfit places for the insane. It is true there is a portion of the harm less and chronic insane who may be very comfortably provided for here, in some places, and there are almshouses so located and constructed and managed, as to afford all the accommoda tions for this class that could be desired. In certain localities, there has been of late great improvement in almshouses, espe cially in the internal arrangement for the care, comfort, and health of inmates, and occasionally in special provisions for insane paupers but there is in the almshouses throughout the country, more or less ground of complaint for the gross neglect and bad treatment of this doubly helpless and dependent class. The hospital makes different, and far better provision for the insane, than the almshouse. The primary object of the hospital is curative treatment, and, the secondary, to furnish a safe receptacle where the insane cannot injure themselves or others. But, for various reasons, we think the matter of cure does not receive the attention that it ought. It is unnecessary here to adduce arguments, either on the score of humanity or economy, to prove that the cure of the insane - treatment for this express purpose should always be the first and paramount considera tion. Friends of the insane should not, by dallying or because of prejudice, delay sending at once every acute case of insanity to the hospital, where all the experience, skill and appliances possi ble should be brought into requisition for the speedy cure of the patient. The first few weeks or months in the institution may decide the case for life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insanity and Its Treatment: Lectures on the Treatment, Medical and Legal, of Insane Patients; Together With Types of Insanity; An Illustrated Guide in the Physical Diagnosis of Mental Disease The discoveries and advances in the physiology and therapeutics of insanity, which have been made during the last few years, are not of so great importance as those recorded in the last issue of these Lectures. But time and experience enable us to estimate the value of the knowledge we possess, to test our remedies, and modify our treatment. By the light of such experience, I have revised this new edition, and trust I have added to its usefulness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Curability of Insanity: A Series of Studies It is now nearly ten years since my essay - "The Curability of Insanity," enlarged from the original in the annual report for the official year 1875-76 of the Northampton Lunatic Hospital - was read before the New England Pyschological Society, and published, by direction of that association, in pamphlet form. Meanwhile, seven other articles upon the same subject have been embodied in my annual reports to the trustees of the aforesaid institution. Those papers have been favorably received by a large number of readers, both at home and abroad. It is not presumptuous to claim that they have greatly modified the aspect of insanity, as a curable mental condition, in the view of a large proportion of the persons most interested in the subject. They have thus been an important agent in stimulating the minds of philanthropists to seek-and in several notable instances to adopt-other methods for the custody and care of a large part of the insane than that of collecting them in expensive and unwieldy curative institutions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insanity and Insane Asylums In no ailment, which humanity is heir to, has there been so great a change, as to its pathology and its treatment, as in insanity. In ancient time lunatics were considered as pos sessed of devils, and under the especial influence of evil spirits. It was supposed that these demons acknowledged no law; that they came not in the usual way of human disorder; nor would they yield to the usual remedies. This supernatu ral disease required a similar power to heal it. Men then looked for the especial intervention of Heaven, to arrest these mental vagaries. And then miracles were wrought and the in sane restored. But when the age of miracles had passed 'by, superstition still preserved the same pathology, while religion ceased to offer the same means of relief; and as this pathology was out of the reach of human investigation - so no science bethought itself, to apply any human aid for restoration; and the poor lunatic was left in hopeless alienation, a prey to his wild fancies or his terrible oppression. Unfortunately this theory of the disease has remained till within the last cen tury; and, notwithstanding the immense improvements that were made in the treatment of all other derangements, almost none has been made in those of the mind. Cases of insanity so often were decisively of a moral cast, and connected with fury, madness, and crime, that it was no difficult matter for the world to suppose that these were de serted of Heaven, and given over to the evil one; and that therefore, the sane were called upon to defend themselves against these dangerous men, and to put such restraints upon them by prisons and chains as would save themselves from in. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of Insanity, 1879-80, Vol. 36 I have selected, as the subject of this paper, The Responsibility of the Insane, in Asylums. In other words, it may be designated an inquiry in respect to the responsibility of the insane, while subject to the duress and regulations of an asylum or hospital for treatment. It is an aspect of the great question of mental responsibility, from the standpoint in which we see the most of it; but so far as my acquaintance with the literature of the subject goes, has not been specially discussed. That it is an aspect of sufficient importance to be separately treated, I am disposed to believe and while I do not expect to treat it exhaustively, I hope to open it for an expression of views that may lead to our mutual and practical advantage. The civil responsibility of the insane has, I conceive, numerous aspects and relations in which it may be viewed, and is worthy of careful consideration in any direction.
