Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Digestive Tract and Their Treatment "Of the making of many books there is no end," was the dictum of Milton, and it is as true now as when written, or else why a preface, which seems an author's justification for launching another book to swell the multitude. His purpose may be one of three - to add something to human knowledge, to put in a pleasing and useful form that which is already known, or to promulgate or defend some pet theory or discovery of his own. My purpose is largely the second: to tell in a clear and not too fulsome fashion the facts pertaining to our branch of internal medicine - the digestive tract- without trying to exhaust any feature of it, whether it be its physiology or pathology, desirable objects, but worthy of a more extensive volume than mine can possibly be. The first object, though incidental, will also be attained in a limited degree, for no one can relate what he has observed in medicine without imparting some information which is not known, at least, to all physicians. While mankind is said to have had the same origin, yet rarely are two members of the human race exactly alike in physiognomy; similarly a disease may present the same general features, but at the same time afford individual differences. It is only by our acquaintance with these departures from the normal course of disease that we become well-rounded authorities, and every book containing any portion of its author's experience with pathological or clinical vagaries must necessarily, when consulted, enlarge our own perspective. In this work the didactic method is employed from its continued use by the author in class work rather than the deductive - commonly known as ease teaching - because the former allows a more complete picture of a disease to be presented, though it must be confessed it is often artificial, and the latter much better "holds the mirror up, to nature." The names of authorities are scantily mentioned in this treatise, since no hope of making an encyclopedia of it has ever occurred to the author - not because he feels under any the less obligations to those authorities for a mine of information, which no one man could have acquired alone in a lifetime. This volume includes articles from many of the most eminent men of Europe, specialists in internal medicine and in diseases of the digestive tract. The subjects are treated very fully and at the same time in a concise and practical manner. The modern methods of examination, including physical and chemical measures, are clearly set forth, which will enable the practitioner to apply them with the same ease that he may make a physical examination of the chest and a chemical and microscopic uran alysis. The diagnosis of the various diseases is fully discussed and the treat ment, including the dietary, is satisfactorily full and complete. Indeed, the subjects are so fully treated that the editor found it inexpedient to add to or to modify the. d104 to any important extent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indigestions, or Diseases of the Digestive Organs Functionally Treated We may use Greek words, and call the above-named erring qualities of the digestion Bradypepsia, Apepsia, and Dyspepsia; only let it be remembered, that making the old adjectives into new substantives adds no one whit to our knowledge - nay, unless care be taken, runs some risk of being a stumbling-block to its progress. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Digestive Organs, and Constipation, Treated Homoeopathically There is, perhaps, nothing in London life so remarkable as its combination of epicurean and sedentary habits. Its dis eases, as remarkably, are precisely those which should arise from such causes; namely, affections of the abdominal viscera. These diseases, however, do not in general arise immediately from the habits now mentioned, but chiefly from such habits at once overloading and rendering torpid the intestinal canal, or producing constipation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatment of the Diseases of the Stomach and Intestines A few words may be said concerning the division of the subject adopted in this book. There is first a chapter on semeiological technique, in which we have described the principal methods employed for the examination of the contents of the stomach, of the faeces, and of the urine, with a view especially to the diagnosis of dyspeptic conditions. We have limited ourselves to an exposition of the simple elementary details which are indispensable to a good clini cal examination. This is not because the physician al ways ought to or can make researches of this kind but it is by means of them that we have gained what additional knowledge we now possess of the nature of dyspepsia, and one should be able to carry them out, since they alone give us certain information as to the chemical variety of gas tric dyspepsia with which we have to deal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diagnosis and Treatment of Digestive Diseases a Practical Treatise for Students: And Practitioners of Medicine In advancing this volume, it is not my purpose to assist in the erroneous movement for divorcing gastrointestinal diseases from the broad field of internal medicine to which they rightfully belong, but to answer, for the student and busy general practitioner, two important questions regarding these diseases, namely, What is the disorder? And What should be done for it? Not only general practitioners, but specialists in other lines, who find it necessary to keep informed in a general way concerning digestion and nutrition, have discussed with me what they desire in such a book. Briefly stated, they need a compact book, which shall contain first, concise, but easily intelligible, descriptions of the various reliable tests for the objects of study in the gastric contents, intestinal juices, and feces; second, practicable and least disturbing methods of determining the position, size, motility, etc., of the stomach, intestines, and other abdom inal viscera; third, a succinct statement of the diagnostic methods indicated in the recognition of digestive diseases; and, finally, an exhaustive discussion of both general and special therapy as applied to these diseases. This I have endeavored to accomplish. I have, how ever, purposely omitted lengthy arguments of unsettled etiologic questions, prolix descriptions of rare conditions which possess only academic interest, and the consideration of pathologic states of a purely surgical nature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Stomach With Special Reference to Treatment The attention of the reader is drawn to pathologic conditions due to ptosis of the abdominal viscera, as the author has obtained good results in the treatment of gastroptosis by employing the principle of mechanical support. Achylia Gastrica is considered under the head of Chronic Gastritis because the latter involves the diminution and eventual cessation of gastric secretion. The author wishes to make acknowledgment of his indebtedness to the many American practitioners who have contributed so greatly to the advancement of gastroenterology, and to the foreign writers whose scientific achievements have received approval nowhere more cordially than in this country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stomach: Its Disorders, and How to Cure Them AN eminent comparative anatomist defines an animal as a stomach with various organs appended, a definition which presents in a very clear light the relative importance of. The stomach in the association of the organs and structures which constitute the human as well as the animal body. The stomach must certainly be regarded as the center of the nutritive proc esses of the body, and any derangement of its functions must therefore result in disorder of the entire organism. The close relation between the condition of the stomach and that of the mind has been observed even by the most primitive nations, and has led some of them to regard the stomach as the veritable seat of the soul. There is sound truth in the ancient German adage, As a man eateth, so is he. It may truly be said that disorders of digestion are the most prevalent of all human ills, and investigators within the last twenty years have been making more and more clear the fact that the great majority of diseases are primarily due to derange ment of the digestive processes. The remarkable researches of Professor Bouchard, of Paris, and others, have shown that such diseases as consumption, typhoid fever. And cholera, as well as Bright's disease and analogous maladies, are indirectly, if not directly, due to a disordered condition of the stomach, as the result of which the defenses of the body are broken down, and infection rendered possible. Notwithstanding the great prevalence of stomach disorders, and the large amount of knowledge and experience which have been accumulated by the profession in regard to them within the last few years, it is nevertheless true that no other class of curable disorders has more frequently baffled the best directed efforts of medical practitioners. This is doubtless owing to the imperfect knowledge of the processes of digestion and of the nature of the disorders to which the digestive organs are subject which has prevailed from the earliest times to within a comparatively brief period. Within the last score of years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Digestive Canal (Oesophagus, Stomach, Intestines) The first edition of Dr. Cohnheim's treatise has fulfilled the expectations of the publishers and translator, in proving that the medical profession desires a work dealing only with those methods which clinical experience has shown to be of working value in diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the digestive canal. In this issue, the editor has emphasized the increasing value of Skiagraphy in recognizing abnormal conditions of the digestive organs. Other editorial notes include recent improvements in methods of diagnosing lesions of the aesophagus, a discussion of acute dilatation of the stomach, the treatment of gastric and duodenal hemorrhage, and the technique of sigmoidoscopy. New plates and cuts illustrating every-day conditions have been prepared. Acknowledgments are made in the text to those gentlemen who have kindly contributed X-ray plates and other illustrations to the new edition. The translator ventures to hope that the work in its present form may be found equal to existing requirements and that it may prove as acceptable to practitioners of medicine as the previous edition has done. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Functional and Organic Diseases of the Stomach IT is some years since a systematic treatise on diseases of the stomach was published in English. No apology is there fore necessary for the issue of this work. During the past few years great advances have been made not. Only in patho logical chemistry, but in pathology generally; and these advances specially affect the study of functional and organic diseases of the stomach, inasmuch as the changes in the processes of digestion in disease have been studied during life, with the result of throwing great light not only on the symptoms, but also on the treatment of these diseases. Since it is possible to study changes in secretion, and, to a less extent, those in motor activity of the stomach during life, the functional disorders of the organ can be with advantage discussed in a separate treatise. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Disorders of Digestion, Their Consequences and Treatment When I was requested by the Medical Society to publish the Lettsomian Lectures which I had the honour to deliver before it, I intended to print them alone. But on looking over them I found that in many places I had referred for fuller particulars to papers which I had formerly published, and it occurred to me that some who might wish to consult these papers would be unable to obtain them, and others might like to be spared the trouble of hunting them up. I therefore decided to reprint some of them along with the Lettsomian Lectures. These papers were chiefly read at different times and before different audiences, and contain the same ideas repeated again and again, sometimes in nearly the same words, almost ad nazwcam. Indeed, if any one should attempt to read this book straight through he will probably throw it_ aside in utter disgust. But if he will only take the book up now and then at a spare moment, and read a single paper at a time, he may perhaps excuse the repetition, as it makes each paper more com plete in itself. Moreover, the reason why certain ideas are repeated again and again is, that they seem to me very important, and I have decided to let the papers remain as they were originally published, without attempting to lessen the repetition, because I hope that the constant recurrence of certain ideas may obtain for them in the mind of the reader the same importance which they have in that of the writer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chronic Disorders of the Digestive Tube This little book, with the exception of the chapter on habitual constipation, is made up of communications during the past year to the Journal of the American Medical Association, the New York Medical Journal, and the Medical Record. I have been persuaded to combine and reprint these articles under one cover, in order to present to the profession, in an easily accessible form, a short and practical study of the chronic disorders of the alimentary tract. Originally intended for serial publication, no very great changes have been found necessary to adapt them to the present form. Great pains have been taken to make each chapter complete in itself. This plan has both its advantages and disadvantages. It relieves the busy reader of the necessity of going through the book in order to find the author's treatment of a particular disorder; but it also renders it impossible to avoid repetition of certain basic and controlling principles. The importance (in the opinion of the writer) of these principles is a satisfactory explanation and apology for their frequent statement.
