Her name is erased from her family records, and she is forced to select a new one. To the two thousand patients on the island of Nagashima, she becomes Miss Fuji. Although drugs arrest the course of Miss Fuji's disease, she cannot leave the colony. Book excerpt: In Dining with Divers - Tales from the Kitchen Table, Simon Pridmore and David Strike invite you to join them at their table to listen to stories and try dishes served up by a gathering of some of the great and the good of the scuba diving world. Explorers, record-breakers, innovators, designers, entrepreneurs and raconteurs all compete for your attention and taste buds in this first volume of a unique series of diving story cookbooks. For many divers, the next best thing to being underwater is talking about being underwater. And there is no better occasion for this than when sitting enjoying a meal together with like-minded friends. Simon and David knew that divers generally love to eat but they didn't expect to find that so many had such impressive culinary skills. The dishes they propose vary from cookouts to curries, from Thai salad to Flemish stew and from jellied eels to vegan cupcakes: there really is something for everyone. The personal accounts of underwater adventure range from discoveries of unknown shipwrecks to exploration in iceberg alley and encounters with big animals: each dive is a delight. You won't know whether to keep this book in the kitchen or on the bedside table. "It's great reading! Written as if the diver is telling the tale around the dinner table to friends. As a diver, I'm also inspired to visit some of the dive sites featured and see for myself. The recipes I love because they are "home cooking": dishes that "normal" people would like to have a go at making." Penelope Williams Executive Chef and Owner of Bali Asli Restaurant "From the first nail-biting story of up-close encounters with crocodiles to the last heart-warming description of how to make Pecan and Pear Bread by first growing a pear tree, Dining with Divers had me hooked from the first dip. Simon Pridmore and David Strike honour their fellow divers in this uplifting compilation of stories from the depths and recipes shared, making it not only a good read but a book to be revisited again and again." Monica Tindall - Editor, The Yum List "Anyone who has ever sat around a table with a bunch of divers, right after they get out of the water, will know that the word "dining" is something of a misnomer. "Gorging" would be better description of the vast, rapid intake of calories taking place. Divers DO love their food, and this book harnesses their passion for both the water and culinary worlds. This compilation of exploits underwater and at the stove stands tall amongst the many books by and about divers - as something entertaining, useful and memorable. Well done!" Book excerpt: “Pollan keeps you turning the pages . . . cleareyed and assured.” —New York Times A #1 New York Times Bestseller, New York Times Book Review 10 Best Books of 2018, and New York Times Notable Book A brilliant and brave investigation into the medical and scientific revolution taking place around psychedelic drugs--and the spellbinding story of his own life-changing psychedelic experiences When Michael Pollan set out to research how LSD and psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) are being used to provide relief to people suffering from difficult-to-treat conditions such as depression, addiction and anxiety, he did not intend to write what is undoubtedly his most personal book. But upon discovering how these remarkable substances are improving the lives not only of the mentally ill but also of healthy people coming to grips with the challenges of everyday life, he decided to explore the landscape of the mind in the first person as well as the third. Thus began a singular adventure into various altered states of consciousness, along with a dive deep into both the latest brain science and the thriving underground community of psychedelic therapists. Pollan sifts the historical record to separate the truth about these mysterious drugs from the myths that have surrounded them since the 1960s, when a handful of psychedelic evangelists inadvertently catalyzed a powerful backlash against what was then a promising field of research. A unique and elegant blend of science, memoir, travel writing, history, and medicine, How to Change Your Mind is a triumph of participatory journalism. By turns dazzling and edifying, it is the gripping account of a journey to an exciting and unexpected new frontier in our understanding of the mind, the self, and our place in the world. The true subject of Pollan's "mental travelogue" is not just psychedelic drugs but also the eternal puzzle of human consciousness and how, in a world that offers us both suffering and joy, we can do our best to be fully present and find meaning in our lives.

Book excerpt: “Thursday morning. One hundred pounds overweight, no man in sight, and rounding the bend to 57 years old—a full-blown catastrophe.” What happens when you realize you’ve had the career of your dreams, but you don’t have the life of your dreams? This was the stark reality facing Sheri Salata when she left her twenty-year stint at The Oprah Winfrey Show, Harpo Studios and the OWN network. She had dedicated decades to her dream job, and loved (almost) every minute of it, but had left the rest of her life gathering dust on the shelf. After years of telling other people’s makeover stories, Sheri decided to “produce” her own life transformation. And this meant revisiting her past, excavating its lessons, and boldly reimagining her future. In these pages, she invites readers along for the ride—detoxing in the desert, braving humiliation at Hollywood’s favorite fitness studio, grappling with losses, reinventing friendships, baring her soul in sex therapy, and more. Part cautionary tale, part middle-of-life rallying cry, Sheri’s stories offer profound inspiration for personal renewal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a new introduction, acclaimed director and screenwriter Paul Schrader revisits and updates his contemplation of slow cinema over the past fifty years. Unlike the style of psychological realism, which dominates film, the transcendental style expresses a spiritual state by means of austere camerawork, acting devoid of self-consciousness, and editing that avoids editorial comment. This seminal text analyzes the film style of three great directors—Yasujiro Ozu, Robert Bresson, and Carl Dreyer—and posits a common dramatic language used by these artists from divergent cultures. The new edition updates Schrader’s theoretical framework and extends his theory to the works of Andrei Tarkovsky (Russia), Béla Tarr (Hungary), Theo Angelopoulos (Greece), and Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Turkey), among others. This key work by one of our most searching directors and writers is widely cited and used in film and art classes. With evocative prose and nimble associations, Schrader consistently urges readers and viewers alike to keep exploring the world of the art film.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Srila Prabhupada explains that there are two things, Philosophy and religion. He says religion without philosophy is sentiment. And sometimes it is fanaticism. And he says that philosophy without religion is mental speculation so both things are very important. Religion means loving sentiments towards God. That is very important. We have to have those sentiments, those emotions towards the Lord. That is very important. and at the same time, we have to have philosophy also, intelligence, because material emotions are also there. If we don’t have proper intelligence by hearing from the guru, hearing from Vaisnavas, and hearing from scripture, then we will probably remain caught up in material emotions. So we really have to have the guidance of Vedic wisdom, vaisnavas, and guru to make sure our emotions, our Feelings are brought properly coming, properly expressed, properly directed, etc.

Book excerpt: This is a definitive account of Fruitlands, one of history's most unsuccessful, but most significant, utopian experiments. It was established in Massachusetts in 1843 by Bronson Alcott (whose ten year old daughter Louisa May, future author of Little Women, was among the members) and an Englishman called Charles Lane, under the watchful gaze of Emerson, Thoreau, and other New England intellectuals. Alcott and Lane developed their own version of the doctrine known as Transcendentalism, hoping to transform society and redeem the environment through a strict regime of veganism and celibacy. But physical suffering and emotional conflict, particularly between Lane and Alcott's wife, Abigail, made the community unsustainable. Drawing on the letters and diaries of those involved, the author explores the relationship between the complex philosophical beliefs held by Alcott, Lane, and their fellow idealists and their day to day lives. The result is a vivid and often very funny narrative of their travails, demonstrating the dilemmas and conflicts inherent to any utopian experiment and shedding light on a fascinating period of American history.

An online obituary writer. A young mother with a dark secret. Set over one sweltering week in July and culminating in a bizarre act of violence that finally changes everything, The Rabbit Hutch is a savagely beautiful and bitingly funny snapshot of contemporary America, a gorgeous and provocative tale of loneliness and longing, entrapment and, ultimately, freedom. "Gunty writes with a keen, sensitive eye about all manner of intimacies―the kind we build with other people, and the kind we cultivate around ourselves and our tenuous, private aspirations."—Raven Leilani, author of Luster
