Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Training for an Effective Life The first five chapters in this little book are speeches I made to newcomers to Harvard University at the opening of the academic year in five years between 1904 and 1912; the sixth chapter is an address made in 1909 to the Hotchkiss School, a preparatory school at Lakeville, Connecticut; and the last chapter is an after-dinner speech made to the Asso ciated Harvard Clubs at St. Louis in 1903. Each of these speeches was taken down at the time by a shorthand re porter, and subsequently revised by me. They have all been printed before in newspapers or magazines; but Houghton Mifilin Company have thought it desir able to put them into a more permanent form as a volume of the Riverside Liter ature Series. Asi read them anew, they seem to me to present to boys and youths. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Two Philosophers Ask and Answer the Big Questions About the Search for Faith and Happiness For seekers of all stripes, philosophy is timeless self-care. Notre Dame philosophy professors Meghan Sullivan and Paul Blaschko have reinvigorated this tradition in their wildly popular and influential undergraduate course “God and the Good Life,” in which they wrestle with the big questions about how to live and what makes life meaningful. Now they invite us into the classroom to work through issues like what justifies our beliefs, whether we should practice a religion and what sacrifices we should make for others—as well as to investigate what figures such as Aristotle, Plato, Marcus Aurelius, Iris Murdoch, and W. E. B. Du Bois have to say about how to live well. Sullivan and Blaschko do the timeless work of philosophy using real-world case studies that explore love, finance, truth, and more. In so doing, they push us to escape our own caves, ask stronger questions, explain our deepest goals, and wrestle with suffering, the nature of death, and the existence of God. Philosophers know that our “good life plan” is one that we as individuals need to be constantly and actively writing to achieve some meaningful control and sense of purpose even if the world keeps throwing surprises our way. For at least the past 2,500 years, philosophers have taught that goal-seeking is an essential part of what it is to be human—and crucially that we could find our own good life by asking better questions of ourselves and of one another. This virtue ethics approach resonates profoundly in our own moment. The Good Life Method is a winning guide to tackling the big questions of being human with the wisdom of the ages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practical Education Men of affairs often sneer at college men and col lege methods. Some of their criticisms are justified, others not. Such justification as they may have had is found in the lack of fitness in college training. Among conditions of life infinitely varied the college has decreed that all boys should take the same studies, in the same way, and at the same time, and that these studies should be the routine of the English boy of a century ago. In thus repeating the thoughts and learning of nations half forgotten, the minds of some Greek-minded and Roman-minded men were stimulated to their highest activity, and for them such training was good and adequate. But there were some, American-minded perhaps, whose powers were not awakened by such influences, These came forth from the college walls into the life of the world, as Rip Van Winkle from the Catskills, dazed by the new experiences to which their studies had given no clue. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Training of Mind and Will IT fell to my lot during the years 1918 and 1919 to spend about four days a week in Army and Centres lecturing to our Soldiers, Sailors, and Muni tion Workers. When I first went to them I was like a man in a dream - not knowing what to say to them, and in a great measure unaware of what they were thinking and feeling. But such a wide experience at home and abroad brought me into close personal contact with the youth of the nation; and in the very midst of the war itself I discovered possibilities of enormous value for the future welfare and progress of our country. Of course, amongst such large numbers of men there were many who had received an excellent educational training. But it can be said of the vast majority that their early training had been comparatively narrow. Still in spite Of this I soon discovered that amongst the latter was material capable of enormous development. After coming to know them individually or in groups I found them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Efficient Layman: Or the Religious Training of Men Stated in the briefest possible terms the inquiry proposed is that of discovering and developing suitable and adequate agencies and means for the stimulation and direction of the life of the adult man to the fulness of its higher possibilities. Man is regarded not as a being having religion or upon whom religion, as a separate something, may be conferred, but he is regarded as normally religious - a being of such a nature and character that his life reaches its fulness only as he lives for its higher values, only as he learns to live in loyalty to his best ideals and as he comes into those adjustments and relationships to that life of the spirit of which he is normally conscious and which he usually calls the divine. The inquiry is followed practically, rather than for the sake of discovering any complete theory of the religious development of the life of the adult. Book excerpt: Fat City is a vivid novel of allegiance and defeat, of the potent promise of the good life and the desperation and drink that waylay those whom it eludes. Stockton, California is the setting: the Lido Gym, the Hotel Coma, Main Street lunchrooms and dingy bars, days like long twilights in houses obscured by untrimmed shrubs and black walnut trees. When two men meet in the ring -- the retired boxer Billy Tully and the newcomer Ernie Munger - their brief bout sets into motion their hidden fates, initiating young Ernie into the company of men and luring Tully back into training. In a dispassionate and composed voice, Gardner narrates their swings of fortune, and the plodding optimism of their manager Ruben Luna, as he watches the most promising boys one by one succumb to some undefined weakness; still, "There was always someone who wanted to fight."

Book excerpt: The tenth-anniversary edition of the book that changed lives in profound ways, now with a new foreword and afterword. In 2006, a groundbreaking feature-length film revealed the great mystery of the universe—The Secret—and, later that year, Rhonda Byrne followed with a book that became a worldwide bestseller. Fragments of a Great Secret have been found in the oral traditions, in literature, in religions and philosophies throughout the centuries. For the first time, all the pieces of The Secret come together in an incredible revelation that will be life-transforming for all who experience it. In this book, you’ll learn how to use The Secret in every aspect of your life—money, health, relationships, happiness, and in every interaction you have in the world. You’ll begin to understand the hidden, untapped power that’s within you, and this revelation can bring joy to every aspect of your life. The Secret contains wisdom from modern-day teachers—men and women who have used it to achieve health, wealth, and happiness. By applying the knowledge of The Secret, they bring to light compelling stories of eradicating disease, acquiring massive wealth, overcoming obstacles, and achieving what many would regard as impossible.
