Book excerpt: The Trail of the Hawk A Comedy of the Seriousness of Life by Sinclair Lewis The Trail of the Hawk, by Sinclair Lewis, is the chronicle of an inveterate Rolling Stone. Carl Ericson, a born rebel against conventions, finds himself from boyhood up at war with the combined forces of family, school and society, all three of which unite in trying to mould him into the average colourless human being. Consequently throughout his earlier years he is in perpetual disgrace, at home, at school and at college. Thus it happens that we find Carl in early adolescence a friendless and penniless wanderer, undaunted and thrilling with a sense of freedom and the boundless opportunity of satisfying his unquenchable curiosity about life. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. Book excerpt: The Trail Of The Hawk This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: "Eyes of the hawk is a tale of Texan rivalry. Thomas Canfield is a man of substance; a Texan by birth and heritage, he is both decent and hard. Branch Isom is only hard. A newcomer to Stonehill, texas, Isom has earned a fortune carting cotton to Mexican ports during the Civil War. As Isom's wealth and holdings in Stonehill grow, Canfield's suffer. Yet, despite his reversals, Canfield stubbornly holds on to every inch of his hard-won ranch. Antagonists from the first, Canfield and Isom find that their changing fortunes aggravate a long-smoldering enmity. An uneasy truce is maintained until a drunken escapade erupts into gunfire and a man's son is killed"--Page 4 of cover.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Totem of Black Hawk: A Tale of Pioneer Days in Northwestern Illinois and the Black Hawk War "Whoa!" and, with a downward thrust of the handle of his long ox whip, Big Tom Clay brought the tired oxen to a welcomed halt. "Martha," and he turned a pair of shining eyes to the woman, who, with a baby in her arms, was seated on the front seat of the huge covered wagon that the weary oxen had been drawing, "Martha - Home!" and his eyes, sweeping the surrounding scene, returned quickly and a bit questioningly to the face of the woman. "Here's the land, right from the hand of God, all waiting for us to make a home on it. I hope it looks as good to you as it does to me. It's the pick of the whole Rock River Valley. Plenty of wood and water, and the soil good enough for a king and ready right now for the plow, without no grubbing out of trees or burning of brush. I reckon 'twon't take us no time to make ourselves mighty comfortable here. It's all that I pictured it, ain't it? You ain't none disappointed, be you?" and a look of affectionate anxiety came into the eyes of the big man. Book excerpt: Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951) was an American novelist and playwright who, in 1930, became the first American to win the Nobel Prize for literature. His first published book was Hike and the Aeroplane, which appeared in 1912 under the pseudonym Tom Graham, followed by Our Mr Wrenn (1914). Main Street (1920) was his first major commercial success. It was initially awarded the 1921 Pulitzer Prize for literature, but was rejected by the Board of Trustees. Babbitt (1922) is a satire on American values, its main theme is the power of conformity and the vacuity of American life. Lewis was awarded the Pulitzer Prize again in 1926 - which he rejected - for Arrowsmith (1925), a novel about an idealistic doctor. Elmer Gantry (1927) was the story of an opportunistic evangelist. His last great work was It Can't Happen Here (1935), a speculative novel about the election of a Fascist President.
