Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tragical Reign of Selimus, 1594 The play was printed in quarto by Thomas Creede with the date 1594, and this is the only edition known. It is described on the title-page as The First part of the Tragicall raigne of Selimus, ' and the epilogue promises a continuation, but there is no evidence that any such second part was overwritten. In 1 638 the unsold stock was issued by John Crooke and Richard Serger, with a new title-page as The Tragedy of Selimus Emperour of the Turkes. Written [by] T. G.' These initials are supposed to refer to Thomas Goffe, whose Turkish tragedies were then fairly recent. The prologue, which occupied the verso of the cancelled title-page, was not reprinted. Download or read book Titus Andronicus written by Jonathan Bate and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Titus Andronicus is one of Shakespeare's earliest and bloodiest tragedies and was hugely successful in his lifetime. Subsequent generations have struggled with its bold confrontation of violence but in the 20th and 21st centuries the play has chimed with audiences again, perhaps because of its simultaneously shocking and playful approach to violent revenge and bodily mutilation. Jonathan Bate's original Arden edition was first published in 1995 and has had a significant influence on how the play has been performed and studied in the past 20 years. This revised edition includes a new 10,000 word introductory essay in which Bate reassess his views on the play's co-authorship with George Peele in the light of contemporary textual scholarship and updates his lively account of the play's performance history, on the international stage and screen. With detailed on-page commentary notes this will continue to be the edition of choice for students, scholars and theatre-makers.
Book Synopsis Shakespeare's Visual Theatre by : Frederick Kiefer
Download or read book Shakespeare's Visual Theatre written by Frederick Kiefer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-09-25 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study of Shakespeare's visual culture Frederick Kiefer looks at the personified characters created by Shakespeare in his plays, his walking, talking abstractions. These include Rumour in 2 Henry IV, Time in The Winter's Tale, Spring and Winter in Love's Labour's Lost, Revenge in Titus Andronicus, and the deities in the late plays. All these personae take physical form on the stage: the actors performing the roles wear distinctive attire and carry appropriate props. The book seeks to reconstruct the appearance of Shakespeare's personified characters; to explain the symbolism of their costumes and props; and to assess the significance of these symbolic characters for the plays in which they appear. To accomplish this reconstruction, Kiefer brings together a wealth of visual and literary evidence including engravings, woodcuts, paintings, drawings, tapestries, emblems, civic pageants, masques, poetry and plays. The book contains over forty illustrations of personified characters in Shakespeare's time.
Download or read book Selimus written by Robert Greene and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2022-04-22 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Broadview Edition of Robert Greene’s Selimus is the first single-volume, modernized edition of this underrated dramatic gem in over a century. First published in 1594, the play grippingly stages the bloody fratricidal warfare inaugurating the reign of Selim I (1512-20) as emperor of the Ottoman Empire. Contributing to the expansion of the range of readily available non-Shakespearean early modern English plays, the edition is designed for scholars and students alike, in the study, classroom, or theatre. The critically edited text of the play is accompanied by a full introduction, comprehensive annotations, and ample contextual material from the early modern period, including Greene’s pamphlet Greene’s Groatsworth of Wit.
