In other words, the numerous biographies of the Scottish Queen have amplified details at the expense of pro portion, with the result that the modern reader has to wade through countless pages to get at the heart of the matter. Hence the plan adopted in the present volume. By Prologue and Epilogue the essential events which preceded and followed the tragic period are passed in review, thus rounding out the biography; but the bulk of the book is devoted to a full account of those swiftly-occuring incidents which are the cause why Mary Stuart must always retain her pre-eminence among royal ladies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mystery of Mary Stuart Mr. Carlyle not unjustly described wthe tragedy of Mary Stuart as but a personal incident in the true national History of Scotland. He asked for other and more essential things than these revelations of high life. Yet he himself wrote in great detail the story of the Diamond Necklace of Marie Antoinette. The diamonds of the French, the silver Casket of the Scottish Queen, with all that turned on them, are of real historical interest, for these triļ¬‚es brought to the surface the characters and principles of men living in an age of religious revolution. Wells were sunk, as it were, deep into human personality, and the inner characteristics of the age leaped upwards into the light. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Mary Queen of Scots The biography of Mary Stuart, therefore, has not only the interest of tragedy, but is a focal point in history, in which the past and present meet, with an intensity of life, perhaps, unknown in the annals of woman, if we except the rise and decline of the Em press, [josephine] whose destiny was the dial of N a peleon'a fate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mary Stuart: A Tragedy in Five Acts From the German of Schiller The first performance of Mary Stuart in this country in English is said by C01. T. Allston Brown, whose dicta as to theatrical matters are bound to command respect, to have been given at the Walnut Street Theatre, in Philadelphia, during the season of 1865-66, by Jean Davenport Lander; but it has been found impossible to verify this statement. It has been found equally impossible to identify the Mary Stuart produced at the Tremont Theatre, Boston, on December 13, 1829, by Mrs. J. R. Duff, at a single performance for this lady's benefit, as a translation of Schiller's play, though the cast of characters, so far as it can be traced, makes this seem to be the fact. Mrs. Duff was the Mary Stuart of this performance, Mrs. G. Barrett the Elizabeth, Mr. Scott the Leicester, and Mr. W. H. Smith the Mortimer. This piece, what ever its source, does not seem to have been repeated by Mrs. Duff or any other, in Boston or elsewhere; but if, as seems probable, it was a translation of Schiller's play, Its unique production slenderly carries off the honors of priority. But whether or not Mrs. Lander played the part in 1865 in Philadelphia in some experimental version, and whatever the origin of Mrs. Duff's isolated performance, Mrs. Lander may fairly be credited with having created the part of Mary Stuart in the United States, since her first appearance in a version of the play prepared expressly for her use by herself and Mr. George Becks can he established definitely, and since her presentation of the character, thus initiated, had a national and not merely a local recognition and repute. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mary, Queen of Tragedy: A Tragedy in Three Acts Mr. Swinburne's Mary Stuart is a libel not only on the Queen's. Character, but on her wit. He not only takes the View of her conduct as a wife, which Elizabeth and her Ministers so long and so successfully laboured to produce on the minds of their own generation, and which there 15 not a particle of real evidence to support, but he makes the most brilliant and accomplished princess of her age an almost insulfer able bore. The greatest woman the human race has ever produced, a, woman who in intellect, learning, literary and political ability, and energy, surpassed almost all the men of her time, as much as she ex celled other women in grace and beauty, is made to maunder through page after page of dreary platitudes, to drone out line after line of often indifferent iambics, till the reader feels that her murderers may almost be forgiven, for that nothing but death could adequately punish such* interminable prolixity. Where such great writers have failed, and, in Spite of his Mary Stuart trilogy, the author of Atalanta is a great writer, it is doubt less presumption of me to hope that I may succeed. I can only say, in' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mary Queen of Scots, Vol. 1: Her Environment and Tragedy; A Biography The aim of the present biography is, therefore, to deal with the more personal aspects of the Marian period, and to deal with them apart from ecclesiastical prepossessions, and on the understanding that the praise and blame of the twentieth century are not quite applicable to the sixteenth. Indeed, the more the present writer has concerned himself with the career of Mary Stuart, the more has he been impressed with the inapplicability to it, in the strict sense, of praise or blameq'hatever may be the rights or wrongs of Protestantism or Catholicism, Mary appears to have been very largely the mere victim of a bitter religious quarrel. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tragic Mary Beautiful for situation, happy in the way the light visits her, noble in natural outline, favoured even in the rise and declivity of her streets, it is nevertheless as the repository of her Queen's tragedy that Edinburgh fascinates us to herself. She is to us what Troy would be could we move now among her streets and palaces, could we learn where Helen stood forth upon the walls, or pace the rooms that Helen made beautiful by habitation. In the apartments of Holyrood we can touch the very silks that Queen Mary handled; the mirror of scolloped edge, graved with alternate doves and quatrefoils, that without contradiction reflected her features, still hangs in her chamber: the flushed tatters of her curtains are before us. And beholding these things we are seized with a passionate desire of access, an eagerness of approach: we cannot pause to wonder, or debate, or condemn; an impulse transports us: we are started on an inevitable quest.
