Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The surviving works of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides have been familiar to readers and theatregoers for centuries; but these works are far outnumbered by their lost plays. Between them these authors wrote around two hundred tragedies, the fragmentary remains of which are utterly fascinating. In this, the second volume of a major new survey of the tragic genre, Matthew Wright offers an authoritative critical guide to the lost plays of the three best-known tragedians. (The other Greek tragedians and their work are discussed in Volume 1: Neglected Authors.) What can we learn about the lost plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides from fragments and other types of evidence? How can we develop strategies or methodologies for 'reading' lost plays? Why were certain plays preserved and transmitted while others disappeared from view? Would we have a different impression of the work of these classic authors – or of Greek tragedy as a whole – if a different selection of plays had survived? This book answers such questions through a detailed study of the fragments in their historical and literary context. Making use of recent scholarly developments and new editions of the fragments, The Lost Plays of Greek Tragedy makes these works fully accessible for the first time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the conviction that only translators who write poetry themselves can best re-create the celebrated and timeless tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, the Greek Tragedy in New Translations series offers new translations that go beyond the literal meaning of the Greek in order to evoke the poetry of the originals. The tragedies collected here were originally available as single volumes. This new collection retains the informative introductions and explanatory notes of the original editions, with Greek line numbers and a single combined glossary added for easy reference. The volume collects Euripides' Electra, an exciting story of vengence that counterposes suspense and horror with comic realism; Orestes, the tragedy of a young man who kills his mother to avenge her murder of his father; Iphigenia in Tauris, a delicately written and beautifully contrived Euripidean "romance"; and Iphigenia at Aulis, a compelling look at the devastating consequence of "man's inhumanity to man."

Resting for support on a stafl; I have come to the roofed dwellings, and the chambers of the aged,11 like the white swan, the bard of grievous dirges, a mere word, and dim-visaged phantom of nightly dreams,12 tremulous indeed, yet with good will. 0 fatherless children, of your sire, 0 old man, and thou too, hapless mother, who bemoanest thy husband in the dwellings of Hades. Weary not yourselves, letting go your foot and tired ankle, like a yoke-bearing steed up a rocky steppe,13 bearing the weight of his foot, driven in a waggon. Take hold of the hands and garments [of me, an old man] whose weak footstep is failing; and do thou aged escort me aged, thou with whom, while young, in the toils of equals, there were fellow-shields (and) young spears, II4 no disgrace to our most glorious country. See how the terrible-looking beams from the eyes [of these children] are like their sire's but yet misfortune has not failed from these children, nor is their beauty gone.15 0 Greece, of what, ah of what allies wilt thou be deprived, after having destroyed these! But [i cease], for I behold Lycus, the ruler of this land, passing near to this dwelling. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tragedies of Euripides, Vol. 2 of 3: In English Verse The plays contained in the present volume have been, on the whole, the least read of Euripides' writings. This is the more to be regretted, inasmuch as they comprise some of the most characteristic work of this poet, and as a knowledge of them is indispensable to a right appreciation of his genius and his influence. The Electra shows his peculiar methods in sharp contrast with those of Aeschylus and Sophocles: the Children of Herakles contains one of the noblest female characters in all literature: in the Daughters of Troy are some of the most brilliant choral odes in all the Greek Drama: the Madness of Herakles has been (unhappily for succeeding translators) already given to English readers by Browning in Aristophanes' Apology, as a representative play of Euripides. I have not, in my Introduction, aimed at giving anything approaching a complete survey of Euripides' literary method and of the ethical tendency of his works. This would have been impossible within so limited a space, and superfluous, in many respects, for thoughtful readers. I have restricted myself to certain aspects of his work which, as it seems to me, have been sometimes misunderstood or misrepresented. These happen also to be the very features in which his originality is most marked, and in which he diverges most widely from his great rivals. An exhaustive treatment of our author would require a large volume, such as has been already given to French students by Professor Paul Decharme. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous books have been written about Greek tragedy, but almost all of them are concerned with the 32 plays that still survive. This book, by contrast, concentrates on the plays that no longer exist. Hundreds of tragedies were performed in Athens and further afield during the classical period, and even though nearly all are lost, a certain amount is known about them through fragments and other types of evidence. Matthew Wright offers an authoritative two-volume critical introduction and guide to the lost tragedies. This first volume examines the remains of works by playwrights such as Phrynichus, Agathon, Neophron, Critias, Astydamas, Chaeremon, and many others who have been forgotten or neglected. (Volume 2 explores the lost works of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides.) What types of evidence exist for lost tragedies, and how might we approach this evidence? How did these plays become lost or incompletely preserved? How can we explain why all tragedians except Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides became neglected or relegated to the status of 'minor' poets? What changes and continuities can be detected in tragedy after the fifth century BC? Can the study of lost works and neglected authors change our views of Greek tragedy as a genre? This book answers such questions through a detailed study of the fragments in their historical and literary context. Including English versions of previously untranslated fragments as well as in-depth discussion of their significance, The Lost Plays of Greek Tragedy makes these works accessible for the first time.

Not illustrated. 1858 edition. Excerpt: ... For thou, O unexampled, O dear among women, thou didst dare to receive thy husband from the realms below in exchange for thine own life. Light may the earth from above fall upon thee, lady! and if thy husband chooses any other alliance, surely he will be much detested by me and by thy children. When his mother was not willing for him to hide her body in the ground, nor his aged father, but these two wretches, having hoary locks, dared not to rescue him they brought forth, yet thou in the vigour of youth didst depart, having died for thy husband. May it be mine to meet with another 27 such a dear wife; for rare in life is such a portion, for surely she would live with me for ever without once causing pain. Hercules, Chorus. Her. Strangers, inhabitants of the land of Pheres, can I find Admetus within the palace? Cho. The son of Pheres is within the palace, O Hercules. But tell me, what purpose sends thee to the land of the Thessalians, so that thou comest to this city of Pheres? Her. I am performing a certain labour for the Tirynthian Eurystheus. Cho. And whither goest thou? on what wandering expedition art bound? Her. After the four chariot-steeds of Diomed the Thracian. Cho. How wilt thou be able? Art thou ignorant of this host? Her. I am ignorant; I have not yet been to the land of the Bistonians. Cho. Thou canst not be lord of these steeds without battle. Her. But neither is it possible for me to renounce the labours set me. Cho. Thou wilt come then having slain, or being slain wilt remain there. Her. Not the first contest this that I shall run. Cho. But what advance will you have made, when you have overcome their master? Her. I will drive away the horses to king Eurystheus. Cho. 'Tis no easy matter to put the bit in their jaws. Her....
