Book excerpt: In this abundantly illustrated volume, Bernard Herman provides a history of urban dwellings and the people who built and lived in them in early America. In the eighteenth century, cities were constant objects of idealization, often viewed as the outward manifestations of an organized, civil society. As the physical objects that composed the largest portion of urban settings, town houses contained and signified different aspects of city life, argues Herman. Taking a material culture approach, Herman examines urban domestic buildings from Charleston, South Carolina, to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, as well as those in English cities and towns, to better understand why people built the houses they did and how their homes informed everyday city life. Working with buildings and documentary sources as diverse as court cases and recipes, Herman interprets town houses as lived experience. Chapters consider an array of domestic spaces, including the merchant family's house, the servant's quarter, and the widow's dower. Herman demonstrates that city houses served as sites of power as well as complex and often conflicted artifacts mapping the everyday negotiations of social identity and the display of sociability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuing her exploration of English interiors, Ros Byam Shaw visits 14 distinctive townhouses full of charm, character and style. In Perfect English Townhouse, Ros Byam Shaw examines the timeless English style of decoration in a variety of Georgian, Victorian, and contemporary townhouses. Architecturally, these tall, narrow properties present challenges. How do you make the best of a basement kitchen with a low ceiling and little light? Or allocate space effectively when you live across five floors? And how do you maximize any outdoor space? Perfect English Townhouse features case studies of such homes, not only in London but also in the provincial towns and cities of England. Some feel like little corners of countryside surrounded by sidewalks, others have a more sophisticated urban allure; some are endearingly quirky, others more classical. All the interiors featured are interesting, inspiring, and reflect the personalities of the people who live in them. These are the kinds of spaces that most of us are familiar with, and that many of us occupy. What is unusual is how cleverly and creatively these examples have been decorated and designed, in the Perfect English style.

Book excerpt: The Town House is the first in a trilogy of novels by Norah Lofts about the inhabitants of a country house in Suffolk from the late fourteenth century to the middle of the twentieth. It begins with the story of Martin Reed, a serf existing under the control of a universally accepted and supported hierarchy. His rebellion, in defence of the woman he loves, casts both of them into the unknown. Freed from his acceptance of circumstance, Reed forges a new path, a path which culminates in the building of the House, and the foundations of a dynasty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For every great country house of the Georgian period, there was usually also a town house. Chatsworth, for example, the home of the Devonshires, has officially been recognised as one of the country's favourite national treasures - but most of its visitors know little of Devonshire House, which the family once owned in the capital. In part, this is because town houses were often leased, rather than being passed down through generations as country estates were. But, most crucially, many London town houses, including Devonshire House, no longer exist, having been demolished in the early twentieth century. This book seeks to place centre-stage the hugely important yet hitherto overlooked town houses of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, exploring the prime position they once occupied in the lives of families and the nation as a whole. It explores the owners, how they furnished and used these properties, and how their houses were judged by the various types of visitor who gained access.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story begins in autumn 1872 with Julie's school days and takes us through Christmas and the building of a snow fort at the foot of the Citadel in Québec City. During Easter week there is the marvellous annual sleigh trip to the sugar bush near Montmorency where the children eat fresh maple syrup, cooled by being poured onto the snow. In early spring, Henri joins a log drive and sees a log jam freed by dynamite. Come summer, the family goes by river boat up the St Lawrence to their summer home near Pointe Platon on the Seigneury de Lotbinière, sixty kilometres north of Québec City. While on the family seigneury the children find an old-fashioned flat-bottomed boat which they name the Rancid Butter because of the smell it has before they clean and fix it. They visit their father's sawmill and take an exciting trip on a huge raft which had come down from Trois-Rivières in a storm. Summer is brought to a close with a thrilling climax during the return trip down the St-Lawrence. Town House, Country House will charm all who pick it up, whether young or old. For younger readers, the story is clear and wonderfully intriguing. For those of us who are not so young, it has a fine sense of rhythm and a story so enchanting as to make us almost forget, despite the rich and vivid detail of post-confederation Québec, that we are looking into history. Jean François Bélisle's line drawings, which accompany the text, are splendidly evocative of the mood and setting of Town House, Country House.
