Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Topography of the Basin of the Tay: Intended as a Companion to the Map of the Basin of the Tay Circumstances, over which the Author and Publishers had no control, caused the writing of this Work to be suspended for six months, while the engraving of the Map of the Basin of the Tay has occupied much longer time than was calculated it would require. The latter being now finished, rather than delay the publication till the Topo graphy be completed, it is deemed expedient to submit to the Subscribers and to the Public, what is already prepared, forming a volume of moderate size. The Author acknowledges, that his researches regarding the Antiquities of this interesting portion of Scotland, have engaged his attention longer than he anticipated, and the Work has grown upon his hands. Before concluding the ancient Topography, he has something to say concerning the battle of Luncarty, Forteviot, and Abernethy. While engaged in these researches, the Author has been repeatedly asked, who were the Picts. Upon this subject, conscious of its difficulty, he had not intended to enter; but, upon reflection, he. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a pathway for the New Coastal History. Our littorals are all too often the setting for climate change and the political, refugee and migration crises that blight our age. Yet historians have continued, in large part, to ignore the space between the sea and the land. Through a range of conceptual and thematic chapters, this book remedies that. Scotland, a country where one is never more than fifty miles from saltwater, provides a platform as regards the majority of chapters, in accounting for and supporting the clusters of scholarship that have begun to gather around the coast. The book presents a new approach that is distinct from both terrestrial and maritime history, and which helps bring environmental history to the shore. Its cross-disciplinary perspectives will be of appeal to scholars and students in those fields, as well as in the environmental humanities, coastal archaeology, human geography and anthropology.

Book excerpt: The world is full of environmental injustices and inequalities, yet few European historians have tackled these subjects head on; nor have they explored their relationships with social inequalities. In this innovative collection of historical essays the contributors consider a range of past environmental injustices, spanning seven northern and western European countries and with several chapters adding a North American perspective. In addition to an introductory chapter that surveys approaches to this area of environmental history, individual chapters address inequalities in the city as regards water supply, air pollution, waste disposal, factory conditions, industrial effluents, fuel poverty and the administrative and legal arrangements that discriminated against segments of society.
