Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. The musical quality of the language and its adaptability for the ready expression of the vocalist is freely acknowledged. Still, the fundamental reason why the old Italians, preferably to the other nationalities, came to be called the maestros is to a great extent overlooked. The Italians, they say, possessed the natural way of singing, but just how their maestros could bring about this natural production of tone, I have nowhere in the limited literature of the vocal art found fully explained. Mercadante was, perhaps, one of the most famous maestros of this old Italian school. The method which he followed in his teaching was imparted to his pupils in their lesson hours. No written formulas were put into their hands, and it depended entirely again on these to transmit his knowledge to the next generation. The most promising pupil of Mercadante, who possessed the greatest possibilities for teaching and handing down his ideas, was Vincenzio Cirillo. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tone-Line: Principles of Voice Development The First Principle to be established in learning to sing is, that the mind controls the body. Singing is a physical act, and before the act, must be the mental mandate. The place to begin is at the beginning; our first attention should be directed to the mind. Now, the mind has ever one object in view, the truth. In learning to sing, therefore, we at once ally ourselves with the great souls of all ages; we are seekers after truth. Such is the dignity, the worth, of tone study and tone production; and on no smaller terms can we hope for the development of a great singer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Half-Tone on the American Basis Look back to the earliest days of the process, which commenced so modestly and insignificantly, and consider the short space of time - not more than twelve years - that the young process has been developing, and realise the industry that has sprung up from the idea of one man. As yet we cannot see the end of these developments, for the process of Autotypy has only just been adapted to three-colour printing. A little space of time, and where now only the form is presented, sketched in grey monotone, we shall see the cheeks redden, the eyes reflect their prismatic sheen, the mouth display its purply lips, and Nature unfold the whole of her colour Charms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others. Book excerpt: Timpani Tone and the Interpretation of Baroque and Classical Music explores the nature, production, and evolution of timpani tone and provides insights into how to interpret the music of J. S. Bach, Handel, Haydn, and Mozart. In drawing on 31 years of experience, Steven L. Schweizer focuses on the components of timpani tone and methods for producing it. In so doing, he discusses the importance of timpani bowl type; mallets; playing style; physical gestures; choice of drums; mallet grip; legato, marcato, and staccato strokes; playing different parts of the timpano head; and psychological openness to the music in effectively shaping and coloring timpani parts. In an acclaimed chapter on interpretation, Schweizer explores how timpanists can use knowledge of the composer's style, psychology, and musical intentions; phrasing and articulation; the musical score; and a conductor's gestures to effectively and convincingly play a part with emotional dynamism and power. The greater part of the book is devoted to the interpretation of Baroque and Classical orchestral and choral music. Meticulously drawing on original sources and authoritative scores from the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries, Schweizer convincingly demonstrates that timpanists were capable of producing a broader range of timpani tone earlier than is normally supposed. The increase in timpani size, covered timpani mallets, and thinner timpani heads increased the quality of timpani tone; therefore, today's timpanist's need not be entirely concerned with playing with very articulate sticks. In exhaustive sections on Bach, Handel, Haydn, and Mozart, Schweizer takes the reader on an odyssey through the interpretation of their symphonic and choral music. Relying on Baroque and Classical performance practices, timpani notation, the composer's musical style, and definitive scores, he interprets timpani parts from major works of these composers. Schweizer pays particular attention to timpani tone, articulation, phrasing, and dynamic contouring: elements necessary to effectively communicate their part to listeners.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Under-Tones and Over-Tones of Life The earnest requests of kind friends who have read some of my humble poems on the mlghty forces that sweep around the mystic shrine of life, have led to the publication of this lowly little volume, in the hope that its lines may carry consolation to hearts bereft, cour age to those ready to faint and surrender in the struggle, rays of hope to those sitting under the black shadows of despair, and comfort to the unnumbered host who endure bodily and mental infirmities, lifting their eyes from the imperfect temporal to the perfect eternal, and that they may awaken in the strong intense tender desire to Lend 3 Helping Hand to those who are weak in life's fierce con ict, lifting the fallen to footholds whence the heights can be won and bright destinies assured. If the somber shadow of unescapable responsibility hangs over some of the brief songs, the thoughtful reader is urged to remember that it is woven in the web and woof of each life that every intelligent act, every re ected thought, every deliberate motive bears on its brow the seal of immortality, and we are destined to meet them again along the track of coming ages, reaping either joy or sorrow from their results. With these ih tense desires to do good to each reader, these thoughts are sent forth on the wings of song. Nonetheless, until now little attention has been dedicated to the choice of the themes represented in the parks and the strategies of their representation. This is particularly interesting when the theme is a historical one, for example ancient Greece. Which elements of classical Greece find their way into a theme park and how are they chosen and represented? What is the “entertainment” element in ancient Greek history, culture and myth, which allows its presence in commercial structures aiming to people's fun? How does the representation of Greece change against different cultural backgrounds, e.g. in different European countries, in the USA, in China? This book frames a discussion of these representations within the current debates about immersive spaces, uses of history and postmodern aesthetics, and analyses how ancient Greece has been represented and made “enjoyable” in seven different theme parks across the world, providing an original and ground-breaking contribution to theme park studies and classical reception.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Historical Account of the Rise and Development of Presbyterianism in Scotland Throughout the whole history of the Reformed Church in Scotland one of the most outstanding features will be found to be the overwhelming desire to maintain the independence of the Church from all secular control, and the most characteristic feature of the disputes which went on during the reigns of the Stewart Kings (especially James VI and I, and Charles I), was the failure of those Monarchs to appreciate the Scottish sentiments Of Patriotism, Protestantism and Freedom.
