Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wood-Using Industries of South Carolina Industries of the State of South Carolina. A portion of the material was collected by correspondence with the manufacturers and part was secured by personal visits and study at the fac tories. Representatives of both the Forest Service and of' the State were engaged in the fieldwork. The statistics given relate to the twelve calendar months of 1912. The work was done in accordance with the plan followed by the Forest Service in preparing similar reports for other States. It contains data showing the kinds and quantities of the various woods employed by manufacturers, and whether they are pro cured within the State or outside; the particular products made, and general information regarding methods of manufacture; the numerous uses found for the different woods; and the cost, or price, of the various kinds of wood delivered as rough lumber at the factories. This report gives the results of the first comprehensive attempt ever made in the Palmetto State to ascertain the character and scope of the industries which employ wood as raw material and reduce it to finished products. It is not possible, therefore, to compare present. Figures with equivalent data for earlier years and thereby measure the progress made. But it is generally known that although the supply of timber is decreasing, the methods of using it are improving. Other losses such as the killing of seedlings, destruction of seed source, reduction in growth, and introduction of rot produce a much greater impact upon the future timber supply than mortality. The total annual loss resulting from both mortality and growth loss adds up to 537 million board-feet of pine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Method of Appraising Pine Sawtimber in South Carolina Every forest landowner who offers his standing trees for sale must answer the question, How much is my stumpage worth? Few, especially among the small owners, can make a reasonable estimate. One reason owners find it difficult to appraise their timber is that they must sell it in an unorganized market where there is no going price to guide them. But even when they know the prices being paid for other tracts, this knowledge is slight help by itself because timber prices vary widely accord ing to the size of trees, distance to mill, and other characteristics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Resources of the Lower Coastal Plain of South Carolina The original Forest Survey was made in the lower Coastal Plain of South Carolina about twelve years ago. Since then some of the best hardwood timberland has been flooded by waters of the Pinopolis Reser voir, furniture and veneer plants have increased their requirements for good - quality hardwoods, and large pulpmills have been built at Charles ton and Georgetown. In addition, new pulpmills in Georgia and North Carolina have added to the demand for pulpwood. All of this, superime posed upon a high level of lumber production, has caused a reduction in all classes of timber except the hardwoods and cypress of less than saw timber size. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forests, Forest Lands, and Forest Products of Eastern North Carolina Indeed, nothing in the way of forest management could be more reckless and destructive than the treatment of our long-leaf pine forests during the past few decades. In the boxing for turpentine the trees have been cut so deeply and so extensively that both their vitality and strength have been greatly weakened, and the storms have prostrated many of the finest specimens. The lumberman and the storms have been followed by forest fires, which have com plated the destruction, already begun in so systematic a manner, of large areas. Started at times by thoughtless hunters at night, by sparks from an engine, by careless squatters or tenants, or even at times by land owners; in the hope of improving the grazing capacity of their lands during the following season, these forest fires sweep irresisti bly across miles Of territory, destroying not only the mature for est trees, but also the young growth; and thus destroy the forest of the future as well as of the present. And the few young pines which may have escaped destruction in this way soon follow the fate of the others by being destroyed by hogs. Many of these long leaf pine lands which lie in the sand hill regions of Eastern North Carolina have had their forest removed so completely that they have become waste lands, covered by a thin growth of nearly worth less scrubby oak. The total area of these waste lands is now nearly half a million acres, and is steadily increasing. This Report endeavors to show that while much of these Waste lands are worth less for other purposes, they can be reset with long-leaf pine forests if they can only be protected against forest fires and stock. And it is gratifying to find among the lumbermen themselves a growing realization of the fact that it is to their interest and to the interest of the public at large that this destructive policy give place to a more intelligent plan which, while it does not Seriously curtail the utilization of the existing forests, it looks to their protection and perpetuity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1920s, in many a sawmill town across the South, the last quitting-time whistle signaled the cutting of the last log of a company's timber holdings and the end of an era in southern lumbering. It marked the end as well of the great primeval forest that covered most of the South when Europeans first invaded it. Much of the first forest, despite the labors of pioneer loggers, remained intact after the Civil War. But after the restrictions of the Southern Homestead Act were removed in 1876, lumbermen and speculators rushed in to acquire millions of acres of virgin woodland for minimal outlays. The frantic harvest of the South's first forest began; it was not to end until thousands of square miles lay denuded and desolate, their fragile soils -- like those of the abandoned cotton lands -- exposed to rapid destruction by the elements. With the end of the sawmill era and the collapse of the southern farm economy, the emigration routes from the South to the industrial cities of the North and Midwest were thronged with people forced from the land. Yet in the first quarter of this century, even as the destruction of forest and land continued, a day of renewal was dawning. The rise of the conservation movement, the beginnings of the national forests, the development of scientific forestry and establishment of forest schools, the advance of chemical research into the use of wood pulp -- all converged even as the 1930s brought to the South the sweeping reclamation programs of the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Tennessee Valley Authority; in their wake came a new generation of wood-using industries concerned not so much with the immediate exploitation of timber as with the maintenance of a renewable resource. In The Greening of the South, this dramatic story is told by one of the participants in the renewal of the forest. Thomas D. Clark, author of many books about southern history, is also an active timber producer on lands in both Kentucky and South Carolina
