A resurvey was made in 1971 with excellent help and cooperation of the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control. Aerial photographs used for this survey were also supplied by the Department. The resurvey of the State was directed by Carl E. Mayer, leader of the Forest Survey Project. He was assisted by John R. Peters, who supervised the field crews; Joseph E. Barnard and David R. Dickson, who applied the general sampling procedures used by the Forest Survey to meet the specific requirements for the Delaware inventory; James T. Bones, who, with the cooperation of the Depart ment of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, collected and compiled data on timber products output and plant residues; Teresa M. Bowers, who assisted in computing and compiling data for the sampling design and the tables in this report; and Carmela M. Hyland, who assisted with administrative services for the field crews and typed the manuscript and tables. The authors and Joseph E. Barnard checked the consistency of the previous inventory with the new inventory. They made frequent use of the tras model in this phase of the data analysis and in the 30 year projections of timber volumes. Cover Photo A typical stand of loblolly pine in southern Delaware. Book excerpt: Author Bob Tjaden is a native Delawarean and a forester. With a great appreciation for Delaware's rich forest history, he wrote this book with the late Walt Gabel, so others can realize the value of these forests. They take the reader on a historical journey with photographs and written documents.Delaware's forests have provided valuable materials for the production and manufacturing of many items. They include ship building, paper making, charcoal production, holly wreath making, wooden basket manufacturing, gunpowder, pulpwood and lumber. During the 1920s, Laurel was the largest manufacturer of wooden bushel baskets and crates for fruits and vegetables. In the 1930s & 40s, Milton was known as the Holly Wreath capital of the world, shipping Christmas wreaths worldwide. In 1927 the Forestry Department was established to provide leadership for the protection and management of Delaware's forests. During this time, forest fire lookout towers were erected, a State Tree Nursery was established, and a Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) camp was built at Redden Forest. The reader will also learn the critical role of the Forestry Department and Delaware's wood products during WW II.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Timber Pines of the Southern United States: Together With a Discussion of the Structure of Their Wood In ignorance of the nature and without appreciation of the economic value of their resources, pioneers squander and destroy without regard to the future the riches they find. We have done so in the United States and are continuing to do so although the pioneering stage should have been passed, especially with our forest resources. We have exploited them as if they were mines, instead of crops which can be harvested and reproduced continuously, and we have done so in a most wasteful manner; nay, we have by irrational methods of exploitation, no doubt due in part to the necessities of a rapidly developing country, in many cases destroyed the conditions for natural reproduction of the more valuable timber species. Fire and indiscriminate pasturing have also assisted in the process of deterioration. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: For her time, Mira Lloyd Dock was an exceptional woman: a university-trained botanist, lecturer, women’s club leader, activist in the City Beautiful movement, and public official—the first woman to be appointed to Pennsylvania’s state government. In her twelve years on the Pennsylvania Forest Commission, she allied with the likes of J. T. Rothrock, Gifford Pinchot, and Dietrich Brandis to help bring about a new era in American forestry. She was also an integral force in founding and fostering the Pennsylvania State Forest Academy in Mont Alto, which produced generations of Pennsylvania foresters before becoming Penn State's Mont Alto campus. Though much has been written about her male counterparts, Mira Lloyd Dock and the Progressive Era Conservation Movement is the first book dedicated to Mira Lloyd Dock and her work. Susan Rimby weaves these layers of Dock’s story together with the greater historical context of the era to create a vivid and accessible picture of Progressive Era conservation in the eastern United States and Dock’s important role and legacy in that movement.
