Download or read book Thin-Section Petrography of Ceramic Materials written by Sarah E. Peterson and published by INSTAP Academic Press. This book was released on 2009-08-10 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of the INSTAP Archaeological Excavation Manual series, Thin-Section Petrography of Ceramic Materials provides a concise overview of the history and application of the practice while detailing how this type of petrographic analysis can benefit archaeologists in the field. When thin-section analysis is employed as part of a thorough, multi-disciplinary study of ceramic materials, it provides a wealth of additional interpretative data to archaeologists, allowing for more accurate interpretations of the past, especially regarding pottery production, provenance, variations in technology over time and space, exchange networks on local and non-local scales, and even social issues such as choices of both manufacturers and consumers and traditions of manufacture.

Book Synopsis The Preparation of Thin Sections of Rocks, Minerals, and Ceramics by : D. W. Humphries
Download or read book The Preparation of Thin Sections of Rocks, Minerals, and Ceramics written by D. W. Humphries and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The microscope is a familiar tool in the biological and medical sciences, and its application to the study of plant and animal tissues is well known. That it can be applied to the study of rocks, minerals, and ceramics may come as a surprise to many people, including experienced microscopists. The principle requirement is that a section or slice, thin enough to be transparent to transmitted light, can be prepared. This is a practical guide to the preparation of thin sections. All that is needed are some simple equipment, a modicum of manual dexterity, and a measure of patience. Above all, thin sections can be made without expensive machinery, although a brief account of mechanical aids is included here. Methods of making polished sections for reflected light microscopy, staining sections, making peels, and extracting heavy mineral suites from sands are covered in later chapters. The book will appreciated as a handy laboratory guide by geologists, earth scientists, materials scientists, ceramicists, and microscopists.

Book Synopsis Rock-Forming Minerals: Orthosilicates, Volume 1A by : William Alexander Deer
Download or read book Rock-Forming Minerals: Orthosilicates, Volume 1A written by William Alexander Deer and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 1982-12-01 with total page 940 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A second edition, in two parts, of Volume 1 of this well-known reference series. This volume deals mainly with the olivine and garnet groups and also the humite group, zircon, sphene, vesuvianite, the Al2SiO5 (including mullite), topaz, staurolite and chloritoid. The disilicates and ring-silicates are covered in Volume 1B. In the years since the first edition was published, the quantity and scope of research on the olivines, garnets and the aluminosilicates has grown enormously and has given rise to a wide variety of literature. This book, which has been completely rewritten and considerably expanded, summarizes the important research results and presents them in an organized fashion. Each mineral chapter is divided into sections on structure, chemistry, optical and physical properties, distinguishing features and paragenesis. Each chapter is headed by a tabulation of mineral data and a sketch showing optical orientation, and concludes with full references to the literature. Diagrams of the crystal structures are presented and are followed by a discussion of the structural features. The chemical sections include a large number of analyses from which structural formulae have been calculated, illustrating the chemical and paragenetical variation exhibited by each mineral; phase equilibria in relevant systems are fully considered. In the sections on optical and physical properties, particular attention is paid to the correlation of these properties with chemical composition. The principal modes of occurrence are described and discussed in the paragenesis sections; here again correlation with chemistry is emphasized. 11 volumes are available in this series.
Book Synopsis Microscopy of Ceramics and Cements by : Herbert Insley
Download or read book Microscopy of Ceramics and Cements written by Herbert Insley and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microscopy of Ceramics and Cements: Including Glasses, Slags, and Foundry Sands presents the extraordinary value of the microscope in dealing with problems in the manufacture and use of ceramics. This book outlines the methods that are useful in applying polarizing microscope. Organized into 15 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the features of the instruments and of the methods employing them that are appropriate to their use in ceramic research and control laboratories. This text then book surveys the foundation of past experience with the microscope in the several ceramic fields of whitewares, refractories, porcelain enamels, cements, abrasives, foundry sands, and metallurgical slags as a basis for engineering applications and fundamental studies. Other chapters consider the nomenclature employed and interference figures. This book discusses as well the raw materials of ceramics. The final chapter deals with commercially used natural abrasives. This book is a valuable resource for chemists, physicist, and mineralogists.
