Book excerpt: "The thermal degradation of blends of phenoxy with polycaprolactone, poly (1,4-butylene adipate), poly(l,4-cyclohexane-dimethylene succinate), poly(2, 2-dimethyl-l, 3-propylene succinate), and poly(hexamethylene sebacate) has been studied using thermogravimetric analysis, direct-pyrolysis mass spectrometry, and infrared spectroscopy. For each blend, the polyester componenent was less thermally stable in the blend compared to the pure state. The thermal stability of the phenoxy was not affected by the presence of the polyesters in the blends. Blends of phenoxy with polycaprolactone and with poly (1, 4-butylene adipate) degrade in two-step mechanisms where the amount of weight loss of each step was proportional to the composition of the blends. Directpyrolysis mass spectrometric analysis showed larger amounts of monomeric caprolactone evolved from polycaprolactone in the blend compared to pure polycaprolactone. Activation energies were calculated for these phenoxy/ polyester blends from the thermogravimetric analysis data using the Flynn-Wall method. Mechanisms are presented in explanation of the observed destabilization of the polyesters."--Abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The usefulness of any material, including nanocomposite polymer blends, depends on its degradability and durability. Thus, this chapter reviews the status of the research on degradation of nanocomposite polymer blends and, in particular, on clay-nanocomposite polymer blends, paying particular attention to both the role of the filler and the role of the blend morphology and composition. The results of recent research indicate that the clay has two opposing effects on the thermal stability of a nanocomposite polymer blend: (1) a promoter effect of the polymer matrix degradation, which decreases the thermal stability, and (2) a barrier effect, which improves the thermal stability. Moreover, the presence of organoclays generally reduces the photostability of nanocomposite polymer blends. Despite the effect of the filler, blend morphology and blend composition can significantly affect, either positively or negatively, the degradation behavior of the polymer blend nanocomposites.

Book excerpt: "The thermal degradation of blends of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) with poly(vinyl acetate) (PVA), and two ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers containing 70 weight percent vinyl-acetate (EVA70) and 45 weight percent vinyl acetate (EVA45) were studied by thermogravimetric analysis and direct-pyrolysis mass spectrometry. The PVC, PVA, EVA45 and EVA70 degrade in two-step processes for each polymer. The PVA/PVC, EVA45/PVC and the EVA70/PVC blends do show some interaction during the first step of the degradation process while the respective second steps are unaffected. The acid produced by the degradation of one polymer causes accelerated loss of the other acid in the blend. The extent of the interaction is a function of the miscibility of the blends."--Abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To identify the specific features of the kinetics of oxidation of polymer mixtures, determine the key structural elements, and create a model that can describe the mechanism of thermal oxidation of polymer mixtures, it is necessary to determine the relation between the initial structure of a polymer mixture, structural rearrangements associated with oxidation and the kinetics of the process. The aim of this book is to elucidate the complicated problem concerning the connection between the structure and mechanism of oxidation of heterogeneous and heterophase polymer systems. The material presented in this book concerns the specific features of the kinetics of oxidation and those of the structure of polymer systems. The book deals with an analysis of the key factors that can affect principally the mechanism of thermal oxidation of polymer mixtures, determines the role of the phase morphology, structure of components, and the interface layer (or boundary) in the kinetics of oxidation of heterophase system by an example of mixtures of polyolefines. Along with the kinetics of oxidation of heterophase systems, problems of investigation of their structural parameters in the oxidized state are considered. With this aim, the material presented in the book concerns not only the mechanism of oxidation of polymer mixtures but also homopolymers of diverse morphology and model systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filling the gap for a reference dedicated to the characterization of polymer blends and their micro and nano morphologies, this book provides comprehensive, systematic coverage in a one-stop, two-volume resource for all those working in the field. Leading researchers from industry and academia, as well as from government and private research institutions around the world summarize recent technical advances in chapters devoted to their individual contributions. In so doing, they examine a wide range of modern characterization techniques, from microscopy and spectroscopy to diffraction, thermal analysis, rheology, mechanical measurements and chromatography. These methods are compared with each other to assist in determining the best solution for both fundamental and applied problems, paying attention to the characterization of nanoscale miscibility and interfaces, both in blends involving copolymers and in immiscible blends. The thermodynamics, miscibility, phase separation, morphology and interfaces in polymer blends are also discussed in light of new insights involving the nanoscopic scale. Finally, the authors detail the processing-morphology-property relationships of polymer blends, as well as the influence of processing on the generation of micro and nano morphologies, and the dependence of these morphologies on the properties of blends. Hot topics such as compatibilization through nanoparticles, miscibility of new biopolymers and nanoscale investigations of interfaces in blends are also addressed. With its application-oriented approach, handpicked selection of topics and expert contributors, this is an outstanding survey for anyone involved in the field of polymer blends for advanced technologies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multicomponent polymeric systems, or polymeric blends, have recently created considerable interest and they represent a new and important challenge for research. These systems have already become technologically important, but the prospects for their applications have by no means been exhausted. For thermodynamic reasons polymer blends do not usually form homogeneous mixtures but exhibit micro or macrophase separation. This incompatibility has some inherent advantages as varying the composition and the processing conditions, materials with different structures and morphologies can be obtained whose properties may be superior to those of one of the components e. g. high impact resistant plastics. Investigations of multicomponent polymer systems constitute a new branch of macromolecular science which now claims as much interest as the behaviour of dilute solutions, crystallization, statistics of chain~~ tacticity, and single crystal formation did a few years ago. The complexity of the problems related to control led preparation and properties studies of mUlticomponent polymer systems is such that it is often more practicable to conduct them on an international basis. The aim of the first Joint Italian-Polish Seminar on Multicomponent Polymer Systems was to discuss recent results obtained in that field in both countries. As the range of topics to be covered was fairly wide, we thought it advisable to invite scientists from other countries to share with us some aspects of their own studies.
