Book excerpt: Paul Eugen Bleuler (1857 - 1939) was a Swiss psychiatrist and eugenicist most notable for his contributions to the understanding of mental illness and for coining the terms "schizophrenia", "schizoid", "autism", and what Sigmund Freud called "Bleuler's happily chosen term ambivalence".This translation of the series of papers on the Theory of Schizophrenic Negativism by the gifted Swiss psychiatrist, Bleuler, is worthy of more than passing attention. The author here endeavors to explain the negativism which is found in dementia precox or schizophrenia, as he prefers to term it. He critically reviews the various theories which have been offered and presents the elucidation of the problem in a penetrating, keen and brilliant manner. The monograph is brief and to the point. Every sentence counts.Bleuler here explains his well-known theory of psychic ambivalence and ambitendency. By ambivalence, he says, is to be understood the specific schizophrenic characteristic to accompany identical ideas or concepts at the same time with positive as well as negative feelings (affective ambivalence), to will and not to will at the same time the identical actions (ambivalence of the will) and to think the same thoughts at once negatively and positively (intellectual ambivalence).Taking up the problem of negativism in particular, Professor Bleuler gives the predisposing causes of negativistic phenomena. The translation by White is very commendable and makes easy reading. This monograph is highly recommended to all those who are interested in psychopathology or psychiatry and in the make-up of the mind of man.

Paul Eugen Bleuler (1857 - 1939) was a Swiss psychiatrist and eugenicist. He was most famous for his work in the field of understanding mental illness. He also coined a number of common psychiatric terms, including "schizophrenia," "schizoid," and "autism." Contents include: "Ambitendency," "Ambivalency," "The Schizophrenic Splitting of the Psyche," "The Lack of Clearness and Imperfect Logic of t he Schizophrenic," "Irrationality in the Schizoid Mind," "Delusion and Hallucination," etc. This fascinating early work on the subject will appeal to those with an interest in psychology and the development of related ideas and theories. Many vintage books like this are increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now complete with the original text and artwork for the enjoyment of readers now and for years to come.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Schizophrenic Negativism As a rule, however, the negativistic reaction does not appear merely as accidental, but as actually preferred to the correct reaction. In ordinary external negativism which consists in the negation of external influences (Ex. Command) and of what one would normally expect the patient to do (Ex. Defaecation in the closet instead of the bed), the following causes are at work: (a) The autistic withdrawing of the patient into his phantasies, which makes every influence acting from without comparatively an intolerable interruption. This appears to be the most important factor. In severe cases it alone is sufficient to produce negativism. (b) The existence of a hurt (negative complex, unfulfilled wish) which must be protected from contacts. (c) The misunderstanding of the surroundings and their purpose. (d) Direct hostile relations to. the surroundings. (e) The pathological irritability of the schizophrenic. (f) The pressure of thought and other difficulties of action and of thought, through which every reaction becomes painful. (g) The sexuality with its ambivalent feeling tones is also often one of the roots of negativistic reaction. Inner negativism (contrary tendency opposed to the will, and intellectually opposed to the right thoughts) is accounted for, in large part, by ambitendency and ambivalency, which in view of the inner splitting of the thought renders intelligible a slight preference for the negativistic reaction. Very pronounced phenomena of inner negativism probably have other cooperating causes, which we, at the present time, do not know. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to address the clinical and neurobiological interface between schizophrenia and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). There is growing evidence that obsessive-compulsive symptoms in schizophrenia are prevalent, persistent and characterized by a distinct pattern of familial inheritance, neurocognitive deficits and brain activation. This text provides guidelines for differential diagnosis of schizophrenic patients with obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and patients with primary OCD alongside poor insight, psychotic features or schizotypal personality. Written by a leading expert in the coexistence of obsessive-compulsive and schizophrenic phenomena, Schizo-Obsessive Disorder uses numerous case studies to present diagnostic guidelines and to describe a recommended treatment algorithm, demystifying this complex disorder and aiding its effective management. The book is essential reading for psychiatrists, neurologists and the wider range of multidisciplinary mental health practitioners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, The Collected Works of C. G. Jung is now available in a complete digital edition that is full-text searchable. The Complete Digital Edition includes Vols. 1–18 and Vol. 19, the General Bibliography of C. G. Jung's Writings. (Vol. 20, the General Index to the Collected Works, is not included.) Volumes 1–18 of The Collected Works are available for individual purchase and are also full-text searchable at http://press.princeton.edu/catalogs/series/bscwj.html [The Collected Works of C.G. Jung]. The Collected Works of C. G. Jung forms one of the basic texts of twentieth-century thought: at once foundational for depth psychology and pivotal for intellectual, cultural, and religious history. The writings presented here, spanning five decades, embody Jung's attempt to establish an interdisciplinary science of analytical psychology, and apply its insights to the fields of psychiatry, criminology, psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, personality psychology, anthropology, physics, biology, education, the arts and literature, the history of the mind and its symbols, comparative religion, alchemy, and contemporary culture and politics, among others: each in turn has been decisively marked by his thought. Of timely and ongoing relevance to the understanding of these fields, Jung's writings are at the same time essential reading for any understanding of the making of the modern mind.
