Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Ethics The logical framework of the position which as a matter of theory I have here attempted to defend will be found more particularly in the first three chapters. These undertake to be a connected piece of reasoning which to some extent stands or falls as a whole. The two more essential features are the conception of value, and the naturalistic theory of duty as having its source in certain negative emotional restrictions on the positive life of desire. In view of the fact that I disagree with his conclu sions on almost every point, I should like to acknowledge a special obligation to the ethical writings of Mr. G. E. Bloore. I have drawn to some extent in the following pages upon articles published at various times recently in the Philo sophical Review. The analysis has however been sharp ened at a good many points; and I trust the argument has been made more convincing by being brought together in a connected form. It is the eternal conflict of the ought of duty and the desire of bodily appetite. It is a recognition of that ethical antithesis between what we call by the general name, duty, and pleasure, an antithesis which, on a more careful consideration, will reveal itself as in reality a conflict between different pleas ures for the ought or must of duty, properly understood, is as essentially a creature of pleasure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introductory Study of Ethics The study of conduct which is here offered to students and teachers of philosophy was begun with the intention of furnishing simply a plain statement of the existing ethical' situation, by which I mean an analysis of the moral problem and a definition of the several types of ethical theory. But it was found impossible to make a plain state ment without adopting a point of view for the definition of the problem and the theories in question. And in the search for a satisfactory point of view I have been led to a more or less independent reconstruction of the situation as a whole. In a study like ethics, where nothing can be uttered which has not been in a measure foreshadowed, it is difficult to know how far one has succeeded in really contributing to the discussion; yet I hope that the following pages may be found not only useful to students beginning the study but of interest to those already familiar with its problems. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moral Theory: An Introduction to Ethics After having suggested some possible criticisms of the theories worked out in these two books, I have then attempted to see whether it would not be possible to arrive at a satis factory positive result by a modification and development of one of them. This occupies the latter part of the book. But all the conclusions in this part are only put forward very tentatively and provisionally. They are intended to stimulate thought and to suggest problems rather than to give a definite solution of them. I owe a debt of gratitude to many friends who have helped me, directly or indirectly, in the preparation of this work. For direct help, I am indebted to my colleague, Prof. Alexander Mair, of this University, with whom I have been able to discuss many of the problems here treated to Mr. W. D. Ross, Fellow of Oriel College, Oxford, who has been kind enough to give me his opinions on the chapters on Aristotle, which he read through in manuscript and, above all to Prof. J. H. Muirhead of the University of Birmingham, who has read through the whole of the book in manuscript, and made many valuable comments and suggestions. Mr. J. E. Turner of this University has helped me greatly in the work of correcting the proofs and preparing an index. Of all those who have helped me indirectly, I can say but little. But I must record a special debt of gratitude to my old tutor, Prof. J. A. Smith of Oxford, who first set me on the road to such understanding as I possess of Aristotle, and, through him, of Moral Philosophy in general and to my pupils in four Universities, with whom I have discussed these and kindred subjects, and from whom, in teaching, I have learned more than I can possibly have taught them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Historical Introduction to Ethics The criticism of moral systems constitutes a special section. In this way the repetition of objections which hold against a number of systems has been avoided. In the classroom, how ever, the author has departed from this plan. Students require and often request some kind of criticism before the lecturer passes from one system to another. The best plan in actual practice is to indicate the chief lines of criticism in concluding the analysis of an author, and toward the end of the course to summarize the various systems, giving a general and special criticism of the theories of morality. The collection of the points of criticism into one division, while having special advan tages in a printed work, need not interfere with the carrying out of the above method in practice, for it is a very easy matter to turn from one part of a book to another. In the choice of the types of ethical theory scarcely any two men would agree, and the author can scarcely hope to escape the accusation of most serious omissions. Some of these omissions will, however, be pardoned by one who bears in mind that the present work does not pretend to be a history of ethics, that the number of types must be relatively few, lest the student be lost in a maze of detail, and that the author can only hope to introduce the student to the field of ethical speculation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Abstract Ethics The present work is the result of long reflections, but was actually called forth by Professor J uvalta's Old and New Problem of Morality, to which my attention was drawn by Mr Benn's review in Mind (january, The instantaneous impression made by the review, in spite of the reviewer's disagreement with the author, was, This is the doctrine of which I was in search. Though awakened from dogmatic slumber by Re nouvier (mind and the Critique Philosophique, I had for long continued the attempt to derive the ethical law of justice from ends or goods. This is of course the tradition of English ethics; and my own resistance to Renouvier's Kantianism was only one expression of the effort of English thought to avoid the a priori. The a priori, however, in some sense, cannot be avoided. English Experientialism, largely justified though it was and is, must inevitably be modified in the end by the Continental Rationalism that found its most powerful expression in Kant. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Ethics The present work is designed as an introductory treatise upon the fundamental problems of theoretical ethics, and therefore to obtain standing ground from which to consider the practical questions that are affected by general principles. The book may seem rather an elaborate treatise for an introduction, but so great are the complications of ethical problems, so manifold are their interests, and so various have been opinions regarding them, that a writer to-day must choose between the perfunctory task of pro ducing a mere syllabus of words and the more important duty of saying enough to satisfy the wants of those who desire more than platitudes, and who wish some insight into the complexities of the case. The analysis of various questions has been made as complete as reasonable limits would allow, with the special pur pose Of trying to throw some light on the perplexities of ethical theories, and to present the author's conclusions regarding them. This purpose has involved a very exhaustive application of the analytic method, which may try the patience of those who desire synthetic and comprehensive results. But the writer is con vinced that we shall never get out of the wilderness of scholastic controversy and see-sawing with traditional theories until the analytic method is first carefully applied and our exact where abouts determined. We may then give a synthetic survey of the field without embroiling ourselves in the hocus - pocus of endless and futile discussions about 'words that may have a thousand meanings. Book excerpt: Theories of Ethics offers a comprehensive survey of the major schools and figures in moral philosophy, from Socrates to the present day. Written entirely in non-technical language, it aims to be introductory without being elementary, so that readers may quickly engage with selected readings from classic sources. The writings of major philosophers are explained in a structured exploration of recurrently important issues about right and wrong, good and evil, social relations and religious meaning. This book is a radical revision of Gordon Grahamâe(tm)s Eight Theories of Ethics (Routledge 2004). A hallmark of the new edition is the incorporation of primary readings into the text itself, making the book suitable as a stand-alone publication for any ethics course or for anyone wanting to know the history and arguments or moral philosophy. Primary sources include extracts from Aristotle, Camus, Hume, Kant, Locke, Mill, Nietzsche, Plato, Reid, and Sartre, as well as Aldo Leopold and James Lovelock. The new edition also offers extended treatment of the objective/subjective debate, social contract theory, Nietzsche on morality, recent interpretations of Kant, the relation between morality and the existence of God, and a full chapter on environmental ethics.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Ethics An apology is perhaps needed for overstepping bounds with so large a bundle of annotations; which, since they are not at all essential to unfolding the theory, might have been omitted, and may be overlooked. This desultory collection of citations from authorities, of quotations from general lit erature, of discussions on minor points, together with what ever occurred to me as illustrative, constitutes in some measure a variorum, an anthology. I feel quite sure that the scholarly reader will be pleased to see the very words of eminent writers, that the earnest student will be glad to have side-lights and finger-posts on the way, and that neither will be offended if here and there he stumble on an enliven ing trifle.
