Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Texas Mathematics Teachers' Bulletin, Vol. 8: November 8, 1922 It is with reluctance that your new editors call attention to the fact that the hand that directs the fortunes of the Bulletin is no longer masculine. We should prefer to leave an unsuspecting public to fancy there had been no change, but honesty prevents us from resorting to such a policy. Much appreciation of the Bulletin has been expressed by the teachers of Texas. We hope to keep the magazine up to its former standard. We wish to express first of all our gratitude to those who are this time our contributors. We would especially commend; 'the selections of subjects treated in this issue, and would ask that some who read this foreword would gladden our hearts by themselves writing articles on these or other interesting subjects. Perhaps it is not known that this Bulletin may be received by any teacher upon request. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Texas Mathematics Teachers' Bulletin, Vol. 11: No. 1 We wish to present in this issue of the bulletin different viewpoints of the missing link now found between high school and college, and if possible locate the difficulty. But it will be noticed that this issue of the bulletin is written largely from the Viewpoint of the college teacher and may not present the whole of the difficulty. The teachers on the other side of the gap should be allowed to have a word in the discussion, and hence we beg our good friends of the high schools to give us in a later issue of the bulletin their viewpoint, making whatever suggestions they may think proper for the good of mathematics in both high school and college. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Texas Mathematics Teachers' Bulletin, Vol. 16: February 8, 1932 Students of mathematics are familiar with the conven tional methods of proving the important identities of trigo nometry. Some of these identities are simple and are easy to prove, while others are complicated and the proofs Of them often give the students considerable trouble. The purpose Of this article is to Show how some Of the more complicated ones can be proved in a very simple way. In the development Of the identities, the reader will note that there is a departure from the conventional methods in only a few cases. In every case of departure, however, proofs which ordinarily involve complex trigonometric substitu tions, resulting in expressions very difficult for the student to follow, are replaced by exceedingly easy proofs. We must help the student in the learning Of a group Of facts and principles, help him acquire an extensive vocabulary Of mathematical ideas. B. To help the student understand thoroughly all funda mental principles. The mere knowledge alone Of principles is Obviously Of no value whatsoever unless accompanied by a thorough understanding. C. To develop the student's ability to use mathematics as a tool - to apply it. The student Should not merely be a mechanical manipulator or imitator. He should develop his ability to apply the principles Of mathematics to new Situations. It is well to note here that a student may have a thorough knowledge and understanding Of principles, and yet be entirely incapable Of using them in the applications. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Texas Mathematics Teachers' Bulletin, Vol. 3: February 20, 1918 In the summer of 1916, during the first four days of the University Summer School, there was held at the University of Texas a Mathematics Tea'chers' Conference. It was rather well advertised in this bulletin and in the literature sent out by the University concerning the session. About thirty teachers came for the conference. They were earnest and enthusiastic and there was a. Feeling that some good had been done. As the writer recalls the matter at this time, each teacher who attended undertook to come again the following year and bring with him two others. Having this encouragement, a second conference for teachers of mathematics Was planned for the same time in 1917. There had been some correspondence on the subject with teachers who had been at the first one, and it was the hope of those who had launched the movement that the next meeting would be both more numerously attended and more profitable to those attend ing than had been the first one. One of the hopes, at least, was not realized. The attendance instead of being larger than in 1916 was somewhat smaller; as to the comparative profitableness of the two occasions, the writer has no sure basis for a very positive opinion. We find ourselves, therefore, in somewhat of a quandary as to whether to attempt a conference this summer. The days for. The meeting would be June 12 to 15. Those of us who are at the University, especially those of us who started this move ment, are loth to see the meetings discontinued, but have no mind to carry them on unless they can reach a reasonable num ber of teachers of mathematics in Texas Schools. Some 45 years ago I had my first lesson in algebra from my teacher in Stockholm, Sweden. The introduction was as follows: We are going to take up a difficult subject that is required for graduation. Excepting for those few of you who intend to teach mathematics you will have no use for this subject as long as you live. When I asked my father for assistance, he told me that neither he, his father, nor grandfather ever had had any real knowledge Of mathematics, but that they had all learned it by rote because it was required for a college degree. Father said that no one with our family name had ever been able to really understand mathematics. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
