Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Texas Mathematics Teachers' Bulletin, Vol. 12: February 8, 1928 The increasing demand in our high schools for subjects that have little value as a preparation for the first year Of college is bringing us nearer to the time when each high school must determine as early as possible those Of its students who expect to enter college and those who will leave at the end of the course for some career outside the university. Definite classes should be formed in the last two years for prospective college students who will be given instruction necessary as a foundation for the freshman year. Frequent conferences between teachers and students would be Of great value in helping to acquaint the student with the problems and difficulties Of the first year Of college. With so many electives in our best high schools it is hardly possible that immature students are capable Of making, without advice, a wise and proper selection Of courses for a foundation for college. Going to college should be a more serious matter with many Of our young people. All ground work for the first year in college should be thoroughly mastered and reviewed the last year in high school. It is absolutely wrong to classify during the last two years of high school the future college man with the one who is going out into life at once. They have different aims and purposes and cannot be formed and fashioned in the same mould. In many Of the larger high schools the formation Of separate classes for pro spective college students could be easily made. The teaching force in the smaller ones would have more diffi culty in meeting the issue - but even there a way should be found to save from failure a large number Of. Those going to college. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Texas Mathematics Teachers' Bulletin, Vol. 3: February 20, 1918 In the summer of 1916, during the first four days of the University Summer School, there was held at the University of Texas a Mathematics Tea'chers' Conference. It was rather well advertised in this bulletin and in the literature sent out by the University concerning the session. About thirty teachers came for the conference. They were earnest and enthusiastic and there was a. Feeling that some good had been done. As the writer recalls the matter at this time, each teacher who attended undertook to come again the following year and bring with him two others. Having this encouragement, a second conference for teachers of mathematics Was planned for the same time in 1917. There had been some correspondence on the subject with teachers who had been at the first one, and it was the hope of those who had launched the movement that the next meeting would be both more numerously attended and more profitable to those attend ing than had been the first one. One of the hopes, at least, was not realized. The attendance instead of being larger than in 1916 was somewhat smaller as to the comparative profitableness of the two occasions, the writer has no sure basis for a very positive opinion. We find ourselves, therefore, in somewhat of a quandary as to whether to attempt a conference this summer. The days for. The meeting would be June 12 to 15. Those of us who are at the University, especially -those of us who started this move ment, are loth to see the meetings discontinued, but have no mind to carry them on unless they can reach a reasonable num ber of teachers of mathematics in Texas Schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Texas Mathematics Teachers' Bulletin, Vol. 2: No. 1, October 15, 1916 In the last bulletin some notion was given in regard to the manner in which students may use formulas and statements al ready given in letters. It was seen that all rules of Arithmetic may be given in the short-hand statements with letters. It is now our purpose to suggest a method of proceeding so that pupils may learn to use this new language or mode of expres sion and hence think in letters instead of numbers. To gain such a power on the part of the pupil some little time and train ing will be necessary. It. Must come through practice and drill by the teacher. Nothing will be so valuable here to the pupil as a, skillful teacher in regular outlined lessons extending over a period of time sufficient to enable the pupile to gain this power of thought expression. One or two recitations per week during the last year before Algebra proper is begun is suggested. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Texas Mathematics Teachers' Bulletin, Vol. 11: No. 2 A preliminary training in the use of letters in the last year of the grades will prepare the student for the be ginning of formal algebra in the first year of the high school. The negative number which is so difficult to the beginner may then be given and formal algebra introduced. By thus leading the student into one difficulty at a time he is able to progress more intelligently than when the double abstraction of letters and negative numbers are given at the same time. This pedagogical mistake is made so far as we know in no other country except in our American schools. Another, pedagogical error made in our schools is to define for the first time certain geometrical magnitudes in the second or third year of the high school and then begin in the same lesson to give logical proofs of properties and relations of those quantities. In educational systems of other countries two to three years preliminary training is given before logical or formal proofs are attempted. This is generally done by definitions, drawing, constructions, measurements and considerable training in the computation of areas and volumes. There are many constructions, measurements, and drawings that Should be made to familiarize the student with the quantities about which he is to make later logical deductions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Texas Mathematics Teachers' Bulletin, Vol. 8: No. 2 This cannot be achieved all in a moment, nor can it be done by the university professor alone. The experienced teachers must be the mainstay of such a movement - both because they know what can be effectively taught, and be cause they are in a position to make experiments. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Texas Mathematics Teachers' Bulletin, Vol. 15: Number 3 Teachers may be interested in methods Of finding solu tions Of these equations in which all quantities are integers. In this paper theorems are stated, and in two cases proved, by which solutions Of these equations can be found, and tables showing several solutions for each equation are given. The proofs involve only algebra and some results Of the elementary theory of numbers which are so simple that, I believe, a thoughtful person can provide demonstra tions Of them for himself in case they are not Obvious. Hence no extensive mathematical knowledge is necessary for the understanding Of this discussion. After the consideration Of the three equations that have been mentioned, a method is indicated for proving that it is impossible to construct a regular pyramid on a square base with all edges rational and with both volume and lat eral area rational. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Texas Mathematics Teachers' Bulletin, Vol. 8: No. 3 The number zero is a more unique member of our number system than most students think. There is no Roman sym bol for'zero. It arose with the Arabic notation in which a digit takes its value from its position in the number. Thus in 23, the two stands for two tens because it is at the left of the 3. In case they wanted to represent such a number as twenty, they had no symbol to place in the position of the number 3 in the former case and so they invented the sym bol 0 to occupy that position. It was not then considered a number. As such, it probably was established, as were negative numbers, to make subtraction always possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Texas Mathematics Teachers' Bulletin, Vol. 16: Number 2 In recent years there has been much discussion Of re forming the division Of the year into months and weeks. Our present system Of months is inherited from the Romans. When Julius Caesar made his reform in 46 b.c. He seems to have divided the year into 12 months Of 30 or 31 days each, except February, which had 29 days in ordinary years and 30 in leap years. At this period the year Of Office Of the consuls began on January 1; in early times the Roman year began on March 1, as is indicated by the names Of the last four months Of the year, which are derived from the Latin words for seven, eight, nine, and ten, although they are now the ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth months. July and August in Caesar's time bore the names Of Quin tilis and Sextilis fifth and sixth months), but in 44 b.c. The name Quintilis was changed to July in his honor, and in 8 b.c. Sextilis was changed to August in honor Of the emperor Augustus. It is Often asserted that Augustus took a day from February and added it to August, either to make his month as long as Caesar's, or because Of a superstitious belief that even numbers were unlucky, but whether this is the true explanation Of our 28-day month cannot now be ascertained.
