Book Synopsis Forget the Alamo by : Bryan Burrough
Download or read book Forget the Alamo written by Bryan Burrough and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2022-06-07 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller! “Lively and absorbing. . ." — The New York Times Book Review "Engrossing." —Wall Street Journal “Entertaining and well-researched . . . ” —Houston Chronicle Three noted Texan writers combine forces to tell the real story of the Alamo, dispelling the myths, exploring why they had their day for so long, and explaining why the ugly fight about its meaning is now coming to a head. Every nation needs its creation myth, and since Texas was a nation before it was a state, it's no surprise that its myths bite deep. There's no piece of history more important to Texans than the Battle of the Alamo, when Davy Crockett and a band of rebels went down in a blaze of glory fighting for independence from Mexico, losing the battle but setting Texas up to win the war. However, that version of events, as Forget the Alamo definitively shows, owes more to fantasy than reality. Just as the site of the Alamo was left in ruins for decades, its story was forgotten and twisted over time, with the contributions of Tejanos--Texans of Mexican origin, who fought alongside the Anglo rebels--scrubbed from the record, and the origin of the conflict over Mexico's push to abolish slavery papered over. Forget the Alamo provocatively explains the true story of the battle against the backdrop of Texas's struggle for independence, then shows how the sausage of myth got made in the Jim Crow South of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. As uncomfortable as it may be to hear for some, celebrating the Alamo has long had an echo of celebrating whiteness. In the past forty-some years, waves of revisionists have come at this topic, and at times have made real progress toward a more nuanced and inclusive story that doesn't alienate anyone. But we are not living in one of those times; the fight over the Alamo's meaning has become more pitched than ever in the past few years, even violent, as Texas's future begins to look more and more different from its past. It's the perfect time for a wise and generous-spirited book that shines the bright light of the truth into a place that's gotten awfully dark.

Book Synopsis United States Holidays and Observances by : Steve Rajtar
Download or read book United States Holidays and Observances written by Steve Rajtar and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-10-17 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day of the year, somewhere in the United States, some sort of holiday or special remembrance is being observed by individuals, organizations, or governments. January 30 is Pennsylvanians with Disabilities Day. On March 26, Hawaii celebrates Prince Janah Kuhio Kalanianaole Day. November 9 is set aside for Women Veterans Day in Alaska, while in Puerto Rico they honor baseball scout Pedrin Zorilla, and as the sun sets, New Jersey holds a Kristallnacht Memorial Night. This book is a detailed reference work about holidays and special observances established by statute in the United States, including American Samoa, the District of Columbia, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Because the United States is a member state of the United Nations, U.N.-designated holidays and longer periods of time, such as years and decades devoted to important world issues, are also included. Following the day-by-day section, holidays are listed chronologically within their jurisdictions (federally designated observances are first in the list; states and territories follow in alphabetical order). A subject index offers access to particular topics (nursing, education, peace...) and a name index indicates holidays celebrating the lives of individuals.
Download or read book 33 Snowfish written by Adam Rapp and published by Candlewick Press. This book was released on 2011-04-12 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Adam Rapp’s brilliant and haunting story will break your heart. But then his words will mend it. . . . Absolutely unforgettable." – Michael Cart On the run in a stolen car with a kidnapped baby in tow, Custis, Curl, and Boobie are three young people with deeply troubled pasts and bleak futures. As they struggle to find a new life for themselves, it becomes painfully clear that none of them will ever be able to leave the past behind. Yet for one, redemption is waiting in the unlikeliest of places. With the raw language of the street and lyrical, stream-of-consciousness prose, Adam Rapp hurtles the reader into a world of lost children, a world that is not for the faint of heart. Gripping, disturbing, and starkly illuminating, his hypnotic narration captures the voices of two damaged souls - a third speaks only through drawings - to tell a story of alienation, deprivation, and ultimately, the saving power of compassion.

Book Synopsis The Regulation of Private Schools in America by :
Download or read book The Regulation of Private Schools in America written by and published by Department of Education. This book was released on 1995 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, a parent's right to choose a private education for his or her children is reflected in the statutes of all 50 states. State regulation of private schools, however, is not without limitations. The challenge to state legislators in regulating private schools is to draft legislation that: (1) respects the fundamental right of parents to direct the education of their children; (2) protects the states' interest in an informed citizenry but avoids interference with religious beliefs unless compelling interests are at issue; and (3) avoids comprehensive regulation of private education that would deprive parents of any choice in education. This handbook presents findings of a study, initiated by the Office of Nonpublic Education, U.S. Department of Education, that conducted a state-by-state analysis of state laws regulating private education. The study, which includes all 50 states, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the District of Columbia, identified the following general areas of regulation advanced by state legislators: recordkeeping and reports, licensing/registration/accreditation, health and safety, curriculum, and public funding. The data show that none of the states regulates private schools in the same way. The report contains comparison charts depicting state oversight of private schools, state-mandated educational requirements, and public assistance to private schools and private school children.
