Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interpretation of the phrase 'the testimony of Jesus' in the Book of Revelation has been the centre of much debate, with no clear consensus regarding its meaning. One of the most important but often neglected issues is whether or not the phrase can be read consistently across each instance of its occurrence. The opening lines of the Apocalypse clearly specify that 'the testimony of Jesus' is a moniker for the book of Revelation itself, indicating that the phrase is an internal self-reference to the book's own message. Nevertheless, most interpreters are reluctant to apply this interpretation to the phrase in other parts of the book, leading to varied and inconsistent interpretations of the phrase. Following the intratextual pattern of the apocalyptic books of Daniel and 1 Enoch we can see that it is entirely possible that 'the testimony of Jesus' is a reference to Revelation's own message, an interpretation which is then supported by Dixon's in-depth study of each of the passages in which the phrase occurs. The exploration of the rhetorical impact of interpreting the phrase in this way shows that 'the testimony of Jesus' is not just another title for John's writing, but is something that is given to and even characterizes those who hear the message of the Apocalypse.

Book excerpt: In this booklet compiled from Life-study of Philippians, Witness Lee fellowships concerning the exaltation of Christ as revealed in Philippians 2:9-12: “My burden in this booklet is to relate the exaltation of Christ to our spiritual experience. God has already exalted Christ, but have you exalted Him? Christ has been exalted in the universe, but has He been exalted in you?...I do not care to talk about the exaltation of Christ in an objective way, but to apply this to our subjective experience.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world with so many voices telling us how to find God and how to know him, how can we know what is the truth? How can we separate what is true from what is false? Jesus said that we can know the truth and that the truth will make us free. Author Stephen W. Lange writes an enlightening book showing how we can know the truth about God and Christ. Jesus Christ said there were four witnesses that corroborate his testimony—John the Baptist, the miracles Jesus performed, the witness of God the Father, and the prophecy about the Messiah from the Old Testament. Stephen highlights the testimony of Christ and examines the four witnesses that corroborate it. Stephen then explores the doctrines of Christ and what they mean for people today. We can know the truth of God. We only have to examine the evidence.

Descending into the darknest recesses of human agony and sin reaches the warm, caring Jesus. These two are the same person. Luke's testimony introduces us to this man become God-God the Son. He comes into our world already bearing a divine nature, already carrying divine qualities. His birth is a miracle; he is "Christ the Lord" (Luke 2:11) The most distinguishing element of this line-by-line, word-by-word commentary is its use of Latter-day Saint scriptures-the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price-to illuminate Luke's Gospel. For example, important LDS doctrines arise from Jesus' activity in the spirit world immediately after his death. More than all other Gospel accounts, Luke captures the compassion and love of the Savior. Such sweet concern manifests itself particularly for the downtrodden and those forced to the margins of society. Within his text, Luke discloses the deep, divine

Book excerpt: Explains the importance of the title and role of Messiah in each of the Gospels and argues that Christianity was a messianic movement rooted in its Jewish context. Michael Bird engages the subject of the messianism of the four Gospels. While the title and role of 'Messiah' ascribed to Jesus in the Gospels has long been regarded as a late add on, a fabricated claim, or an insignificant feature, Bird argues in contrast that the messianic claims are the most significant for the portrayal of Jesus.

This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the author’s (George N.H. Peters) never before published 1907 study notes on the biblical book of Revelation. Mr. Peters unique approach to interpretation faithfully adheres to the the plain grammatical sense of scripture. By doing so He successfully combines biblical prophecy with oath-bound covenants (Abrahamic and Davidic) to unlock this book’s predominant symbolic language. Peters correctly identifies Jesus (not St. John) as the real source of this prophecy. He clarifies the main subject of the book as being, not a ‘Revelation’ of future events but rather, an ‘Apocalypse,’ a personal appearing. He further demonstrates through the symbols used that the ‘Day of the Lord,’ or 2nd Advent, (like the 1st Advent) will unfold in distinct stages and over a discernible period of time. Therefore, although this study is today over 100 years old the reader is instantly confronted, through this ‘Testimony,’ by Jesus, the predicted ‘Son of Man,’ righteously administering the judgements of God and proclaiming His physical return to establish His Kingdom on earth. The prophetic future series of events laid out strikes the reader as eerily similar to today’s dangerous and chaotic world.

Book excerpt: A Comprehensive Guide to Discipleship in the New Testament and Today's World Although the concept of discipleship is an integral part of New Testament teaching, it has largely faded from discussion in both the academy and the local church. To revive and reclaim this teaching for believers in the twenty-first century, editors John Goodrich and Mark Strauss have assembled an expert team of scholars to uncover what every New Testament book teaches about discipleship, providing a comprehensive, biblical picture. In addition, other contributors explore discipleship in the context of the local church, spiritual formation, and the life of the mind. Together, these essays point the way forward for becoming more like Jesus Christ, and helping others do the same, in our personal and corporate lives. "An impressive roster of scholars who have addressed a vital but often neglected topic in both the church and in the academy. . . . Rich with insight, Following Jesus Christ represents a major advance in this essential area of study." --Craig A. Evans, Houston Baptist University "We are treated here to a survey of what discipleship means in the New Testament from experts in the field, and we also see some of the wider dimensions of discipleship in this important work. All those wanting to understand discipleship will find this to be a valuable resource." --Thomas R. Schreiner, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspiration: Towards a Christian Interpretation of Biblical Inspiration anchors its study of inspiration firmly in the Scriptures and examines the inspired nature of the Bible and its inspiring impact. Gerald O'Collins begins by examining classical view of inspiration expounded by Karl Barth and Raymond Collins. He takes up the inspired origin of the Old Testament, where earlier books helped to inspire later books, before moving to the New Testament, which throughout shows the inspiring impact of the inherited Scriptures—both in direct citations and in many echoes. The work then investigates the Bible's inspiring influence on Christian worship, preaching, teaching, the visual arts, literature, and life. After a chapter that clarifies the interrelationship between divine revelation, tradition, and inspiration, two chapters expound ten characteristics of biblical inspiration, with special emphasis on the inspiring quality of the Bible. O'Collins explains a major consequence of inspiration, biblical truth, and the grounds on which the Church 'canonized' the Scriptures. After spelling out three approaches to biblical interpretation (the authorial intention, the role of readers, and the primacy of the text itself), the book ends by setting out ten principles for engaging theologically with the Scriptures. An epilogue highlights two achievements of the book. By carefully distinguishing inspiration from divine revelation and biblical truth, it can deliver readers from false problems. This work also underlines the inspiring effects of the Scriptures as part of the Holy Spirit's work of inspiration.
