Book Synopsis Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament as Part of Christian Literature by : Marinus de Jonge
Download or read book Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament as Part of Christian Literature written by Marinus de Jonge and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-08-04 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary witnesses of the writings called Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament are, in great majority, of Christian provenance. It has been customary for scholars to look for an originally Jewish form of the documents, reflecting Jewish life and thought in the period between 200 BCE and 100 CE. In this volume, M. de Jonge argues that these writings should, first of all, be studied as documents relevant for Christians. This volume incorporates essays written earlier by the author as well as a number of new chapters. The first part deals with general questions concerning the transmission of the pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament whereas the second part has a particular focus on the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs and the Greek Life of Adam and Eve.

Book Synopsis The Spirit World in the Letters of Paul the Apostle by : Guy Williams
Download or read book The Spirit World in the Letters of Paul the Apostle written by Guy Williams and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2009-09-16 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis R. H. Charles by : James C. VanderKam
Download or read book R. H. Charles written by James C. VanderKam and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-02-02 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: R.H. Charles: A Biography first situates Charles's work in the history of biblical scholarship. The remainder of the book is divided into three parts that draw on material stored in several archives and other sources. The first provides an account of his early life and education in Ireland. Part two is devoted to his Oxford years (1890-1913). Within a chronological framework, the chapters regarding the Oxford period focus on his pioneering work with Jewish apocalypses as evident in his many textual editions, translations, and commentaries. For all of his major publications an attempt is made to assess how his work was received at the time and how it continues to affect the field of early Judaism. The third part furnishes a biographical overview of his work as a canon of Westminster (1913-31). At the Abbey, he carried out pastoral duties but also published books that made contributions to publicly debated issues such as divorce, while at the same time continuing his scholarly endeavours. The volume includes bibliographies of Charles's many publications and of works cited.

Download or read book The Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs written by C. H. Charles and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the PREFACE. The many laborious years of study of the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs see at last their close in the present volume. The labour involved has been very great, at times indeed oppressive, but it has not been without its own compensations; for the toil has been frequently lightened by the joys of discovery, and the task of research has been often one of sheer delight. The pleasures of foxhunting are not to be compared with those of the student in full quest of some truth, some new fact showing itself for the first time within his intellectual horizon. But to return. Many of the problems arising from our text had hitherto been wholly unattempted, or else had been wrongly solved in the past--in large part owing in earlier years to the lack of documentary authorities, and in later years to the large demand on the scholar's time that the mastery of these would have entailed.

Book Synopsis Paul and Ancient Views of Sexual Desire by : J Edward Ellis
Download or read book Paul and Ancient Views of Sexual Desire written by J Edward Ellis and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2007-06-08 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul and Ancient Views of Sexual Desire refutes the argument put forward by some scholars that Paul, in his sexual ethics, is in partial agreement with a current of thought in the Greco-Roman world that condemns sexual desire and advocates the elimination of such desire from marital sex. Ellis argues against not only this line of thought but also the attendant notion that this way of thinking underlies Paul's comments on homosexual activity in Romans 1. Through close analysis of numerous ancient passages relating to sexual desire, Ellis demonstrates that ancient thinkers tend to condemn not sexual desire in itself but excessive sexual desire and lack of self-control. Furthermore, he contends that ancient auditors would have been unlikely to see condemnation of sexual desire in Paul's words in 1 Thessalonians 4 or 1 Corinthians 7.
