Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tensile Properties of Some Structural Alloy Steels at High Temperatures In 1913 Schulz4 reviewed available data relating to the high temperature properties of turbine materials, but the information presented for alloy steels was, in large part, for those containing varying proportions Of nickel. Guillet5 reported, among several special alloys for use at high temperatures, a steel containing nickel, chromium, and tungsten which showed exceptionally high strength at 750 to 800 C (1380 to 1470 F). Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume organizes information by alloy so that pertinent data can be found easily. Physical and mechanical properties from room temperature to temperatures in excess of 100 C are shown graphically or in tabular form. All data is thoroughly referenced. Now high-temperature property data can be found in one complete reference! Over 200 alloys are organized by AISI number into 11 major sections: Irons, Carbon Steels, Alloy Steels, ASTM Steels, Low Alloy Constructional Steels, Ultra High Strength Steels, Tool Steels, Maraging Steels, Wrought Stainless Steels, Heat Resistant Casting Alloys, and Wrought Iron-Nickel Alloys and Iron-Nickel Superalloys. Each alloy record lists the designation, specifications, UNS number composition product forms and a comment on the high-temperature properties and applications. Data is then given for physical properties such as density, specific heat, thermal conductivity, thermal expansion, electrical conductivity. Poisons ratio, moduli of elasticity and rigidity, etc. Mechanical properties follow, and include tensile properties, shearing and bearing properties, impact properties, creep, stress rupture and stress relaxation, and fatigue properties. The last part of the alloy record gives other effects of temperature, such as hot hardness, corrosion, and growth.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tensile Properties of Alloy Steels at Elevated Temperatures as Determined by the "Short-Time" Method The information available on the correlation of results from short time and from flow tests is rather limited. N o conclusions that short time tests can entirely replace flow tests are warranted on the basis of available information. It is believed, however, that a large amount of valuable preliminary information can be obtained with the short time method with a great saving of time in the study and development of alloys for continuous service at elevated temperatures. In fact, since the advent of austenitic alloys for service at elevated tempera tures there is still more reason for extended flow tests, such tests to be made for even longer periods of time than heretofore. As many austenitic alloys are metastable yet sluggish in their response to ther mal treatment at temperatures in the vicinity of to F. (6000 to 700° C.) it would not seem advisable to determine their characteristics by the short-time method only. The group of materials reported upon in this paper includes both commercial alloy steels and some special alloys which had been made primarily to show the effects on the tensile properties of various alloy ing elements, such as silicon, chromium, nickel, vanadium, tungsten, molybdenum, and aluminum. Book excerpt: The Memorandum contains a description and summary of preliminary properties of eleven new alloys that are considered to be promising high-temperature materials. Most of them are in the experimental-application stage of their development; however, a few have reached the point where they can be considered commercial. Included are six nickel-base alloys, two iron-base alloys, one iron-nickel-base alloy, one cobalt base alloy, and one multicomponent alloy that contains primarily nickel and chromium. Following descriptions of composition and microstructure of each alloy, a large section of the memorandum is concerned with physical and mechanical properties, predominantly stress-rupture and creep properties. Oxidation and sulfidation as well as elevated temperature stability of the alloys is discussed. Information on processing and availability of the alloys is also given. (Author).

The result of 5 years of investigation from researchers around the world New data from a range of new techniques, including synchrotron radiation X-ray topography provide safer and surer methods of identifying deformation mechanisms Informing the future direction of research in intermediate and high temperature processes by providing original treatment of dislocation climb DESCRIPTION: Thermally Activated Mechanisms in Crystal Plasticity is a unified, quantitative and fundamental resource for material scientists investigating the strength of metallic materials of various structures at extreme temperatures. Crystal plasticity is usually controlled by a limited number of elementary dislocation mechanisms, even in complex structures. Those which determine dislocation mobility and how it changes under the influence of stress and temperature are of key importance for understanding and predicting the strength of materials. The authors describe in a consistent way a variety of thermally activated microscopic mechanisms of dislocation mobility in a range of crystals. The principles of the mechanisms and equations of dislocation motion are revisited and new ones are proposed. These describe mostly friction forces on dislocations such as the lattice resistance to glide or those due to sessile cores, as well as dislocation cross-slip and climb. They are critically assessed by comparison with the best available experimental results of microstructural characterization, in situ straining experiments under an electron or a synchrotron beam, as well as accurate transient mechanical tests such as stress relaxation experiments. Some recent attempts at atomistic modeling of dislocation cores under stress and temperature are also considered since they offer a complementary description of core transformations and associated energy barriers. In addition to offering guidance and assistance for further experimentation, the book indicates new ways to extend the body of data in particular areas such as lattice resistance to glide.
