Book excerpt: "It’s hard to drain the swamp when you’re up to your rear end in alligators." —Bill Wilson "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour." —The Apostle Peter (1 Peter 5:8 KJV) The first rule of living in the jungle of real life is you have to survive, which means staying off the lunch menu. The rhinoceros (rhino) is a great example. It lives in contented solitude that does not completely exclude, but selects its companions carefully. It does not rely on the herd for protection. It is not the fastest, strongest, tallest or smartest animal in the wild. It stays off the lunch menu due to its protective skin that is over one-half inch thick. It is extremely difficult to penetrate. Teflon is a slick coating that has transformed the world due to its nonstick properties, thus The Teflon Rhino. The rhino’s skin is slick and thick. It is not swayed by the crowd, coerced by opinion, or motivated by popularity. It does not flinch in the face of adversity or succumb to the fear of the unknown. My greatest attribute as a leader and a citizen of the real world was birthed in me as an abandoned child. I am a survivor, and I have written this book as a survival manual for you. I pray that the survival skills I have learned over six decades of life and ministry will help navigate you through the trials, heartaches, adversity and attacks that real life will bring into your jungle. Whether or not you believe it, you can be a survivor of the rarest kind. Like me, you can be a Teflon Rhino.

In the book, Orlando takes you back to the mid 80's when he was just a teen-ager. A wild teenager who was given the rare opportunity to distribute cocaine in large quantities in the Philadelphia tri-state area of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Due to Orlando's connections he spent 12 years living an amazing life and lifestyle, as Orlando takes you on the ins and outs of "the game", and all that comes with it like money, power, women, and event movie stars. Travel along all those years with Orlando, and his crew of three that he would assemble to insulate him from the bullets, and the feds. Where it wouldn't be until 14 years after Orlando began living a lifestyle of a King in America that he would finally be convicted of a crime and sentenced to 15 years of hard time. Walk with Orlando through the old penitentiary as it was called back then, to see, hear, and smell, what it was like to do hard time. So hard that due to Orlando tussling with a prison guard he was thrown in the RHU, better known as the hole, for a one year torture session with the guards. A torture session neither he nor anyone else who assaulted staff was supposed to, live through. It was at that time, that upon Orlando's death, he had an encounter with God. One that would bring him back alive, with the knowledge of a secret from the Bible, and a message from God.

Book excerpt: In the last decade over 6,000 rhinos have been killed in South Africa. Relentless poaching for their horns has led to a catastrophic fall in black rhino numbers. Meanwhile a corrupt South African government turns a blind eye to the international trade in rhino horn. This is the background to Peter Hain's brilliantly pacey and timely thriller. Battling to defend the dwindling rhino population, a veteran freedom fighter is forced to break his lifetime loyalty to the ANC as he confronts corruption at the very highest level. The stakes are high. Can the country's ancient rhino herd be saved from extinction by state-sponsored poaching? Has Mandela's 'rainbow nation' been irretrievably betrayed by political corruption and cronyism?

Book excerpt: My Unsung Soul presents a look into the heart of a poet. It considers six distinctive themeslove, nostalgia, sorrow, life, testimony, and warfare. Within each element the verses explore a gamut of emotions designed to invoke the deepest sentiments, memories, and dreams. These verses feature perfectly painted pictures and gardens of good and evil in equal representation, depicting yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Author Derrick DerRon Holloway has loved and disdained himself between the lines, revealing what served as his souls salvation and leaving judgment and condemnation entirely up to others. He travels deep into his darkest and all too familiar sins, expressed in his addiction to She in the transparency of his testimony pieces. He hopes to hold up mirrors to help others search their souls in an attempt to find redemption in the end. Holloway speaks not of heroics but of things that often go unspoken and unheard. In this collection of poetry, one man presents expressions of his heart and soul, offering moments of nostalgia, reminiscence, and love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For all ear doctors, otosclerosis is an intriguing condition. The disease appears to occur only in the human race and mainly in young adults. The pathology of the disorder has only been known for a little more than a century. Treatment of the fixed stapes has included many special therapies during that period. Because of the evolution of technology in medicine, the response to the development of otosclerosis has become increasingly clear in spite of the fact that the cause of this ear disease is still unknown. Literature on otosclerosis includes thousands of publications, amongst which many textbooks. Recent books are often composed of chapters with a specific section on otosclerosis, written by a specialist in that area. Most of the time it concerns proceedings publications after an otological congress or symposium. A textbook containing all facets of the disorder is still missing. To fill this gap, this Treatise on otosclerosis and its treatment has been compiled. As many publications as possible, from the discovery of the ear disease in the second half of the 19th century until now, have been used to compile a well-organized textbook. All the latest aspects of otosclerosis such as history, aetiology, genetic factors, histopathology, current stapedotomy procedure and complications in otosclerosis surgery are discussed extensively. In addition, attention was paid to cochlear otosclerosis, age and otosclerosis, imaging, hearing aids and future perspectives of otosclerosis treatment. This treatise on otosclerosis is a complete textbook that deals with all aspects of the ear disorder extensively.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A completely satirical yet oddly practical guide to surviving and thriving in Canada’s westernmost province. So you’ve arrived in British Columbia. Perhaps you’re just passing through; perhaps you want to stay a while. You may even be contemplating making British Columbia your home. What you need is a well-researched, clearly written, and comprehensive guide to living and even prospering in Canada’s westernmost province. This isn’t it. However, the information contained in this book will allow you to experience British Columbia with minimal damage to your health and well being. Having lived in nearly every province in the country before settling in BC, Ian Ferguson can say with great authority that things work differently here. So differently, in fact, that visitors and newcomers from other parts of Canada may put themselves in physical (or social) peril if they try to dress, act, drive, work, vote, or socialize in the same ways as they would in Ontario, New Brunswick, or (god forbid) Alberta. With practical advice, little-known facts, and personal anecdotes, Ferguson tackles everything from how to recognize a local (and differentiate the various types of facial hair that delineate the male British Columbian) to how to survive both natural and unnatural disasters (whether it’s a light dusting of snow on the southern tip of Vancouver Island or a full-blown hockey riot) to how BC has been governed through the ages (like the time a bootlegger was put in charge of prohibition). Illuminating, hilarious, and only mildly offensive (if you have no sense of humour), The Survival Guide to British Columbia will make you question why you ever came here in the first place.
