Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Latin in Secondary Schools The keynote of modern pedagogy is a protest against tradition, whether in subject-matter or in methods of presentation. No subject of instruction has, when compared with other studies of the curriculum, so long a tradition behind it as has Latin. Inasmuch as every study in our modern system of education must, as is fitting, prove its ability to secure a definite result of actual worth, we shall first attempt to ascertain what credentials it needs to present to prove its right of admission as a subject of instruction. Unless a study can be correlated with something in the lives of our pupils - we are dealing with boys and girls of high-school age - then that study is useless; as idle as the inquiries of Tiberius at Capri when he wished to discover what song it was that the Sirens sang. It is true, that the mere fact of knowing something - Ah! la belle chose que de savoir quelque chose! - may enthuse a student for the moment, no matter whether the thing learned has some connection with vital matters or not; but later, when he perceives its isolation, the reaction may take the form of a violent protest against the whole subject of which the mental gymnastic was a part. Of this fact the writer can recall two instances, the one connected with arithmetic, the other with English grammar. His teacher in arithmetic insisted that in a case of division of fractions he must not invert the divisor and multiply, but work instead by the method of finding a greatest common divisor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Case for Latin in Secondary Schools This pamphlet is meant to set out, briefly and simply, for the use not merely of those engaged in organising, carrying on, and improving the work of national education, but of ordinary people, and particularly of parents, the case for Latin in Secondary Schools; that is to say, in schools which, as defined by the Board of Education] offer a course of general education suitable for pupils of an age-range extending from 12 to 17 at least. Three points should first be stated, and must be borne in mind in order to make the scope of what follows clear: I. What is dealt with here is the case for Latin. The case for Greek is a different thing, and is not dealt with here: it would only confuse the issue. For the same reason, the substitution of Greek for Latin as a subject in the Secondary School course, an experiment which has been advocated in some quarters, and has here and there been tried, is not discussed. "The classics" in the ordinary use of the term mean Latin and Greek, and therefore that term will not be used at all except where it occurs in quotations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Latin and Greek in the Secondary School Along with this appreciation of the substance of Roman thought went an appreciation for the form in which it was expressed. The Spirit of the day was anti-barbarous to a degree. Correctness and elegance of diction came to be a passion with the Latinists of the time. This tendency naturally went too far, and we notice the beginning of an arbitrary exaltation of the Ciceronian manner of speech as the sole example worthy of imitation, - an attitude which unfortunately, despite frequent and vigorous protest, is still widely prevalent to - day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Study of Ability in Latin in Secondary Schools This investigation was begun when the writer was director of the Bureau of Educational Research connected with the New Hampshire Department of Public Instruction. A preliminary test was given in 1916. Most of the data contained in the present study were gathered near the end of the school year in 1917. The scoring of the papers and the tabulation of the data were done during the summer of that year. The study was made possible by funds with which to maintain the Bureau, granted by the General Education Board, for the purpose of carrying on scientific studies of educational practice. It should be stated that the General Education Board merely granted to the State Superintendent of Public Instruction the funds for maintaining the Bureau and in no way directed what investigations should be made. The Bureau acted entirely on its own initiative and accepts full responsibility for its findings. This monograph has been written for two classes of readers. There is a large class of people who are directly and very vitally interested in Latin as it is taught in both secondary school and college. They are mostly school and college teachers and administrators, who desire to know the results of any investigations which throw light upon defects in present methods of teaching Latin, and they are also interested in any suggestions in the direction of improved methods of instruction. Their interest is thus chiefly in the practical side of the investigation. There is also a large class, made up of scientific investigators in education, who are interested not only in the practical results of the investigation, but also in the methods by which the results are secured. They will insist upon a full presentation of the data from which the conclusions were derived. For this reason the data have been presented in as great detail as the limits of the monograph will permit. This study was undertaken for purely administrative purposes to answer certain questions with reference to the success with which Latin was being taught in the secondary schools of the State as a whole. Therefore, in many cases, a general average gives a sufficient answer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Latin IN the course of twelve years' experience in teaching Latin to beginners, the writer has become convinced of two facts: The first is that a textbook for secondary schools should be written from the standpoint of the secondary school, and therefore by a person who is familiar, from actual experience, with the condi tions of the classroom. Most of our textbooks for pupils begin ning Latin, however admirable in other respects, are written in such a way as to require for intelligent comprehension consider ably more maturity of judgment and understanding than the average beginner in Latin can be expected to possess. The second of these facts is that a book to be of the greatest help to the teacher, and thus secure the best results, should be so ar ranged as to enable the teacher to concentrate energy upon one thing at a time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching High-School Latin: A Handbook This little book represents a revision and enlargement of the Handbook for high-school Teachers of Latin which was published as a bulletin of the Missouri State Normal School, Cape Girardeau, in 1907, while the writer was connected with that institution as professor of Latin and Greek. That bulletin had a surprising popularity. An edition of five thousand was distributed within a short time, mainly in response to requests from all parts of the country. Even after a lapse of more than eight years, calls for Copies are frequently received. An earnest effort has been made to prepare a practical manual that will meet some of the immediate needs of the young teacher of Latin. The plans proposed represent actual experience in the high school, the normal school, and the college. They have been tested thoroughly and found effective. They do not represent a final solution of all the problems of the young teacher, but they do represent the best contribution the writer can now make to the cause of better teaching in our schools. Some of the suggestions here given were made originally by Professor C. U. Clark, director of the American Acad emy, Rome, Italy. My obligation to him is very great. Professors G. J. Laing and F. J. Miller, of the University of Chicago, did me the kindness to read the manuscript and make suggestions which have added very much to the value of the book. Their help is fully appreciated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Latin IN the following pages I have attempted to show what a classical course can do for a boy, even though the time devoted to it be strictly limited. Many believe that classics are a good thing, but that they take up more hours Of the time-table than can be spared. This I think is an error. Chapters II., III. And IV. Contain a discussion Of the methods Of Latin teaching for the first three years. I have kept in view not only the boy with a genius for classics, who will flourish under any system, but also that Often neglected person, the average boy. The teaching Of Greek is not discussed here. I believe it should follow the lines Of Latin teaching. Progress, however, is much more rapid, because there is no need to spend time in learn ing again principles Of language already learnt in the Latin course. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Latin Book The right of Caesar to occupy an important place in the early years of the Latin program of secondary schools has not been successfully challenged. His Commentaries will continue to enjoy the prestige which the traditions of centuries have assigned them. And rightly; for no Latin writer has sur passed this literary soldier in the composition of vigorous and luminous prose, which so admirably fits his work to be a medium for the presentation of the form and structure of the Latin language to the young student. But the right of Caesar to occupy not alone the centre of the stage but the whole stage as well, in the second year of Latin study, has been justly and successfully challenged. During the last few years a very general call has been heard for an easier, better graded, richer second year program in Latin than the study of Caesar alone affords. Not only have secondary teachers urged this change, but college professors and administrative officers have generally approved the plan, and accepted this more varied program in lieu of their long established requirements in Caesar. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Syntax of High-School Latin The joint authors Of the work recognize that it has serious limitations if viewed as a philological study; in fact, very few Of the collaborators are professed students Of Latin syntax; they are merely hard-working teachers Of Latin bent on making Latin teaching more economical and effective. From the point Of View Of statistical method which aims to ascertain main tendencies and important divergences rather than minute differences there need be no question that the results have a sufficiently high reliability to serve the educational purposes for which they are intended. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boston Public Latin SchoolA preparatory school should naturally be established before a col lege: so it is not strange that this School antedates Harvard College by two or three years, justifying the remark of a distinguished gradu ate oi both, that the Latin School dandled Harvard College on her knees. From the earliest times the pupils of the one have passed on to the other in a stream whose flow, occasionally narrowed or widened, has never been intermitted; and the names of not a few of the most eminent graduates of the College are borne on the rolls of the School. The Latin School has always been a democratic institution. Its privileges have been confined to no class. The minister's and the tallow-chandler's sons have sat side by side on its forms, and engaged in friendly rivalry in schoolroom and on play-ground, and equally enjoyed its privileges. Its honors have been given for merit. And all have had the same chance to gain them. In establishing this School, our fathers provided at the very beginning a school for teaching the higher branches, instead of one for mere elementary instruction. An interesting article in a volume of the Proceedings of the Massachusetts Historical Society shows that the establishment of this school is largely due to John Cotton, who brought to this country a knowledge of the High School which was founded by Philip and Mary in I 554 in Boston, in Lincolnshire, England, in which Latin and Greek were taught. Cotton came to this country in 1633, and was one of the ministers of the First Church. Two years later, the Free School was established; and his will provides that under certain contingencies half his estate should go to Harvard College, and half to the Free School of Boston, which confirms the impression that he was prominent in founding it. A house for the master to live in free of rent, a feature of the English school reproduced here, strengthens this impression.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
