Book excerpt: The study of phase transformations in substitutional alloys, including order disorder phenomena and structural transformations, plays a crucial role in understanding the physical and mechanical properties of materials, and in designing alloys with desired technologically important characteristics. Indeed, most of the physical properties, including equilibrium properties, transport, magnetic, vibrational as well as mechanical properties of alloys are often controlled by and are highly sensitive to the existence of ordered compounds and to the occurrence of structural transformations. Correspondingly, the alloy designer facing the task of processing new high-performance materials with properties that meet specific industrial applications must answer the following question: What is the crystalline structure and the atomic configuration that an alloy may exhibit at given temperature and concentration? Usually the answer is sought in the phase-diagram of a relevant system that is often determined experimentally and does not provide insight to the underlying mechanisms driving phase stability. Because of the rather tedious and highly risky nature of developing new materials through conventional metallurgical techniques, a great deal of effort has been expended in devising methods for understanding the mechanisms contrOlling phase transformations at the microscopic level. These efforts have been bolstered through the development of fully ab initio, accurate theoretical models, coupled with the advent of new experimental methods and of powerful supercomputer capabilities.

Book excerpt: Racism after Apartheid, volume four of the Democratic Marxism series, brings together leading scholars and activists from around the world studying and challenging racism. In eleven thematically rich and conceptually informed chapters, the contributors interrogate the complex nexus of questions surrounding race and relations of oppression as they are played out in the global South and global North. Their work challenges Marxism and anti-racism to take these lived realities seriously and consistently struggle to build human solidarities.

Book excerpt: The book serves as a major source of information on all the cultivated oilseeds and major tree borne and minor oilseeds grown globally. Composition, characteristics, properties and utility of different oilseeds and their constituents, namely, oil, protein, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins and Phytochemical in food and non-food sectors including medicine has been covered in detail. The book also deals with post-harvest technology and processing of oilseeds to obtain good quality products like vegetable oil and oilcakes. The processing aspects like ghani, expeller, extrusion, solvent, and SC-CO2 extraction along with the refining of oils have been discussed. Oilseeds and their quality especially, the nutritional quality of oils, oilcakes, oleo-chemicals and preparation of edible products from groundnut, soybean sesame, sunflower, Niger and coconut have been discussed and presented in the book. Anti-nutrients, when present interfere with the digestion process as also the health of humans and animals. Hence methods of reduction/removal of anti-nutrients like phenolics, protease inhibitors, ricin, glucosinolates and aflatoxins etc. have also been covered in detail in the book. Evaluation of quality is important for understanding and utilization of any commodity. Keeping this aspect in view, methods of analysis of oil, protein, sugars, minerals, vitamins and anti-nutrients have been presented in the on procedures. This book is thus is a comprehensive coverage of all aspects of oilseeds and their quality. It will be highly useful to students, researchers, producers, processors and policy planners.

Book excerpt: "In a survey of Balkan history since the early nineteenth century, Misha Glenny provides the essential background to recent events in this war-torn area. No other book covers the entire region and offers such profound insights into the roots of Balkan violence or explains so vividly the origins of modern Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania and Albania. Many readers will welcome the author's insights into the final century of Ottoman rule, a complex and colorful period essential for understanding today's conflicts." "Glenny's account of each national group in the Balkans and its struggle for statehood is lucid and fair-minded, and he brings the culture of different nationalisms to life. The narrative is permeated with sharply observed set pieces and portraits of kings, guerrillas, bandits, generals and politicians. He interweaves a narrative of key events with the story of international affairs - the relations between states in the Balkans and between them and the great powers."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of a five-day NATO Advanced Research Workshop "On Three Levels, the mathematical physics of micro-, meso-, and macro phenomena," conducted from July 19 to 23 in Leuven, Belgium. The main purpose of the workshop was to bring together and to confront where relevant, classical and quantum approaches in the rigorous study of the relation between the various levels of physical description. The reader will find here discussions on a variety of topics involving a broad range of scales. For the micro-level, contributions are presented on models of reaction-diffusion pro cesses, quantum groups and quantum spin systems. The reports on quantum disorder, the quantum Hall effect, semi-classical approaches of wave mechanics and the random Schrodinger equation can be situated on the meso-level. Discussions on macroscopic quantum effects and large scale fluctuations are dealing with the macroscopic level of description. These three levels are however not independent and emphasis is put on relating these scales of description. This is especially the case for the contributions on kinetic and hydrodynamicallimits, the discussions on large deviations and the strong and weak coupling limits. The advisory board was composed of J.L. Lebowitz, J.T. Lewis and E.H. Lieb. The organizing committee was formed by Ph.A. Martin, G.L. Sewell, E.R. Speer and A.

Book excerpt: Presents concise monographs, accompanied by full-colour photographs, for the 150 plant species most commonly used for medicinal purposes in the Republic of Korea. In view of the country's long and successful history in the use of traditional medicines, the book aims to provide written and visual documentation of important plants and summarize their uses to treat ailments, protect against disease, or promote health. In so doing, the book also aims to encourage the wider use of Korea's medicinal plants and promote their conservation. Each plant species is covered according to a common format, which includes the scientific name of the plant, Korean name, English common name, parts used, and clinical uses in traditional Korean medicine. Also included are a detailed botanical description of the plant, its habitat and geographical distribution, followed by a summary of biological actions and chemical components as reported in the traditional medicine literature. The 150 full-colour photographs, included to facilitate identification of plants and plant parts used for medicinal purposes, were taken under natural conditions during the flowering or fruiting seasons. Retrieval of information is facilitated by the inclusion of indexes giving scientific names, the English common names, and the Korean plant names.
