Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Taylor Effect presents an original and diverse collection of essays addressing Charles Taylor’s magisterial A Secular Age. Ranging from close and critical readings of Taylor’s formulations and suppositions; to comparative studies of Taylor and various ‘interlocutors’; to applied approaches utilizing Taylor’s concepts; to explorations launched from a Taylorian foundation; the 13 chapters comprise a multifaceted exploration of Taylor’s multifaceted achievement. Given the vast, synoptic sweep of Taylor’s magnum opus, the contributors represent a suitably diverse range of interests, backgrounds and expertise—members of departments of philosophy, literature, philosophical theology, systematic theology, moral theology, education, and political science, whose interests stretch from Plato to Girard, phronesis to pedagogy, Deism to dogmatics, medical ethics to aesthetics... Accordingly, The Taylor Effect is not only one of the first major responses to A Secular Age: the astonishing breadth as well as the quality of contributions will ensure that it remains a central reference point in any future discussion of Taylor’s work.

Book excerpt: Gas / liquid contact apparatuses are widely used in chemical, biochemical or pharmaceutical industry to provide and transfer gas species as reactant from the gaseous phase to pre-dissolved reactants in the liquid phase enabling a preferred reaction. The global and local transport are complex interlinked processes and therefore in practice in reactor design industry, mostly empirically correlated. For a secure control of the overall process and a more efficient reactor design, the local transport processes at gas / liquid interfaces need to be investigated in complexity reduced systems to be understood. Elongated bubbles, Taylor bubbles, in vertical channels 5.5 < D < 8 mm overcome the problem of dynamic shape deformation, complex 3D rise trajectories and they have a volume independent rise velocity, which make them the ideal experiment for reliable and reproducible investigations. Detailed optical measurements of global and local processes via high-speed Shadowgraphy, 2D2C PIV and p-2D LIF give new insights into the dependency of local bubble shape and global terminal rise velocity, establish a Sherwood correlation of shrinking CO2 bubbles in various channel sizes and shows the coupling of local transport phenomena at the bubble interface and the mixing in the wake region.

Taylor and Politics assesses Taylor's thought and its relevance to contemporary political challenges, especially religion and secularity, multicultural diversity, political alienation and demands for greater democracy. Craig Browne and Andrew Lynch outline Taylor's key concepts and highlight the substantive applications of his ideas. They explain the substantial differences between Taylor's conception of social imaginaries and that of Cornelius Castoriadis, and contrast Taylor's account of the political form of modernity with Claude Lefortäs."--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to dedicate critical attention to the work of influential theater-maker Taylor Mac. Mac is particularly celebrated for the historic performance event A 24-Decade History of Popular Music, in which Mac, in fantastical costumes designed by collaborator Machine Dazzle, sang the history of the United States for 24 straight hours in October 2016. The MacArthur Foundation soon thereafter awarded their “genius” award to a “writer, director, actor, singer, and performance artist whose fearlessly experimental works dramatize the power of theater as a space for building community . . . [and who] interacts with the audience to inspire a reconsideration of assumptions about gender, identity, ethnicity, and performance itself.” Featuring essays, interviews, and commentaries by noted critics and artists, the volume examines the vastness of Mac’s theatrical imagination, the singularity of their voice, the inclusiveness of their cultural insights and critiques, and the creativity they display through stylistic and formal qualities and the unorthodoxies of their personal and professional trajectories. Contributors consider the range of Mac’s career as a playwright, performer, actor, and singer, expanding and enriching the conversation on this much-celebrated and deeply resonant body of work.
