Book excerpt: Relatives of three immigrants from Eastern Europe await their arrival in New York in 1893. When passengers from their ship are ferried from Ellis Island to the Battery, the three immigrants are nowhere to be found. Ship line officials inform the relatives that the three had died at sea and their bodies dropped overboard, but how they died was not known. Flashbacks describe the lives of the three persons up to the time of their deaths, revealing their character and behaviors that might influence what led to their deaths. The grieving relatives are determined to find out how they died in order to have closure and peace of mind. Sara Newman, the sister of one the deceased, locates the ship's captain and gets his explanation of what happened to her brother and the others. She then finds the ship's purser, who tells her a different story about what took place. Later, she speaks to a neighbor's sister, who had been on the ship, and gets a third account of how the three immigrants died. Being unable to achieve closure, Sara's family hires an immigration lawyer to investigate and determine what the real explanation was for how the deaths happened. The lawyer's research leads to a court hearing that uncovers the facts, but not before some intriguing developments.

Book excerpt: Inspired by a 1968 U.S. Commission on Civil Rights six-day hearing in San Antonio that introduced the Mexican American people to the rest of the nation, this book is an examination of the social change of Mexican Americans of Texas over the past half century. The San Antonio hearing included 1,502 pages of testimony, given by more than seventy witnesses, which became the baseline twenty experts used to launch their research on Mexican American civil rights issues during the following fifty years. These experts explored the changes in demographics and policies with regard to immigration, voting rights, education, employment, economic security, housing, health, and criminal justice. While there are a number of anecdotal historical accounts of Mexican Americans in Texas, this book adds an evidence-based examination of racial and ethnic inequalities and changes over the past half century. The contributors trace the litigation on behalf of Latinos and other minorities in state and federal courts and the legislative changes that followed, offering public policy recommendations for the future. The fact that this study is grounded in Texas is significant, as it was the birthplace of a majority of Chicano civil rights efforts and is at the heart of Mexican American growth and talent, producing the first Mexican American in Congress, the first Mexican American federal judge, and the first Mexican American candidate for president. As the largest ethnic group in the state, Latinos will continue to play a major role in the future of Texas.

What does it mean to refer to first generation Hmong refugees and fifth generation Chinese Americans both as Asian American? In Disoriented: Asian Americans, Law, and the Nation State, Robert Chang examines the current discourse on race and law and the implications of postmodern theory and affirmative action-all of which have largely excluded Asian Americans-in order to develop a theory of critical Asian American legal studies. Demonstrating that the ongoing debate surrounding multiculturalism and immigration in the U.S. is really a struggle over the meaning of "America," Chang reveals how the construction of Asian American-ness has become a necessary component in stabilizing a national American identity-- a fact Chang criticizes as harmful to Asian Americans.
