Book excerpt: Tao Te Ching: Original Text and A Modern Interpretation by Yuan Zhiming English Translation by Daniel Baida Su and Chen Shangyu Among hundreds of English translation and thousands of Chinese interpretation of Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching, Yuan Zhiming offers a unique perspective - seeing Lao Tzu from the vintage point of the ancient Hebrew Bible. This is a dawning moment in the history of Lao Tzu interpretation. Historically, there have always been huge differences from one interpretation to another, each tinted with individual interpreter's specific world view, mostly from the view point of Confucianism, Buddhism, Legalism, Militarism, Yin and Yang, Neo-Confucianism, Marxism, and so on. Only in the light of the Bible, the mysterious and profound Tao becomes visible, touchable, explicit, and understandable. Yuan Zhiming describes his enlightenment: "When I enter into Tao, experiencing the magnificent and miraculous divinity through the life of Jesus, there seems a ray of brilliant light illuminating Lao Tzu, enabling me to recognize the inner meaning behind each of Lao Tzu's word." Yuan Zhiming firmly believes that there must be a spiritual source which links the ancient Hebrew civilization with the ancient Chinese civilization, and with all other ancient civilizations. This source is unquestionably originated from the One who sets all nations on one planet (Earth) and that One is Logos - Tao. Tao is universal. The universal Tao will illuminate all heart in the East and the West.

Book excerpt: 'Of ways you may speak, but not the Perennial Way; By names you may name, but not the Perennial Name.' The best-loved of all the classical books of China and the most universally popular, the Daodejing or Classic of the Way and Life-Force is a work that defies definition. It encapsulates the main tenets of Daoism, and upholds a way of being as well as a philosophy and a religion. The dominant image is of the Way, the mysterious path through the whole cosmos modelled on the great Silver River or Milky Way that traverses the heavens. A life-giving stream, the Way gives rise to all things and holds them in her motherly embrace. It enables the individual, and society as a whole, to harmonize the disparate demands of daily life and achieve a more profound level of understanding. This new translation draws on the latest archaeological finds and brings out the word play and poetry of the original. Simple commentary accompanies the text, and the introduction provides further historical and interpretative context. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

"To me," Writes Smullyan, "Taoism means a state of inner serenity combined with an intense aesthetic awareness. Neither alone is adequate; a purely passive serenity is kind of dull, and an anxiety-ridden awareness is not very appealing." This is more than a book on Chinese philosophy. It is a series of ideas inspired by Taoism that treats a wide variety of subjects about life in general. Smullyan sees the Taoist as "one who is not so much in search of something he hasn't, but who is enjoying what he has." Readers will be charmed and inspired by this witty, sophisticated, yet deeply religious author, whether he is discussing gardening, dogs, the art of napping, or computers who dream that they're human.

Book excerpt: My introduction to the Tao Te Ching was the beautiful Gia-Fu Feng/Jane English translation. Had I left it at that and not read another translation, there would have been no need for my interpretation. However, finding Gia-Fu Feng/Jane English translation physically too large for my pocket, a smaller size translation is procured. Predictably, with two of anything existing, there needs exist "Comparison." In comparing the two translations, it follows that there exists differentiation - in this instance satisfaction and dissatisfaction. In reconciling the dissatisfaction, I find myself with three, four & finally eleven translations, all unsatisfactory in some respect. My way to restore unity is to read them all and then create my own interpretation - a single interpretation which is totally satisfying to me. This then, is what you will find in this book - my interpretation based upon reading direct translations. Making no claim for its authenticity, scholarly content or literary style, its single merit is that at this moment it pleases me. However, not yet attaining sagely enlightenment, my ego would be delighted to discover it was also pleasing to you.

Book excerpt: The tenth anniversary edition of William Martin’s free-verse interpretation of the Tao Te Ching, written expressly for those coming into the fullness of their wisdom Lao Tzu’s Tao Te Ching, one of the world’s most widely read books of wisdom, reminds its readers that the sage has been venerated in China for thousands of years. In this free-verse interpretation of the Tao, William Martin subtly and powerfully captures the complex emotions connected with growing older. He encourages today’s sages to recognize their inestimable worth in a youth-centric world that often goes astray: “Will I be able to harvest my life in compassion and love for the world? Will I find in my own heart the wisdom for which I long? This question trumps all others for me. I suspect it is the same for you.”

Book excerpt: Tao Te Ching is the 2,500 years old source to Taoism, written by the legendary Taoist philosopher Lao Tzu. In 81 short chapters, he presented the world according to Tao, the Way, and how mankind should adapt to it. The book has become one of the foremost world classics of wisdom - maybe even more relevant today, than it was to Lao Tzu's contemporaries. This translation of the text focuses on the clarity and simplicity by which Lao Tzu expresses his fascinating cosmology and profound ethics. Each chapter is thoroughly explained, also regarding how this old wisdom can be understood and applied today. Stefan Stenudd is a Swedish writer of both fiction and non-fiction. As a historian of ideas, he studies the thought patterns in creation myths around the world. He is also a high-grade instructor of the peaceful martial art aikido, which he has practiced for almost 40 years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I simply needed to know I was wanted" "I simply needed to know I was wanted," Kenny Loggins once said. This comes from a man who knew how much people loved him and adored his songs, from a man who has been probably more productive in his life than ninety nine percent of the population, from a man who lived his life discovering His Way, His Tao, and never stopped. There's a lesson to be learned here, the lesson that the great thinkers of the ages, from Laozi (Lao Tzu), Buddha and Christ, to "enlightened" era philosophers like Kant, Hegel and Schopenhauer, to the modern spiritual leaders and thinkers of our age have been pondering and yet still do not have the answer to - "Can A Man Reach Perfection, the Spirit, the Divine, if you will?" Or perhaps there's no need to actually reach perfection and it is indeed the Way, the Tao that is our lives, that matters the most? Are we drifting aimlessly in a sea of change or are we looking for a beacon to guide us? For Kenny Loggins, that connection to the spiritual has always been his ability to, as he put it, " Stop and listen to the song playing in my head." This for him was the light, the love, the sense of Interconnectedness of the world as a whole and his songs are the records of what the Spirit imparted to him when he would allow himself to listen. For the man who was so connected to his inner self and to the spiritual around him, Kenny Loggins to this day is still discovering his Tao and that idea of never stop "listening to the songs that are playing in our heads," is, perhaps, his greatest gift to us. I hope you will embark on this journey with Kenny Loggins and me and we will all emerge wiser, better, and filled with the Love that is easy to find if we just stop and listen. After reading Kenny Loggins book, The Unimaginable Life, It was obvious he had underwent a major shift in his awareness to the innerconnectiveness, truth, and love of the universal divine love. Through his music he was able to demonstrate these new principles. With the release of the album "Leap of Faith" in 1991, Loggins brought forth his joy of this awakening and desired to share the incredible sense of love and belonging he had discovered. Even though by his own admission, his music had always had a deep spiritualness to it, it was with this album that he knew he was awakened to it and truly felt it. He was singing from his soul. He was singing an universal truth that has been here since the beginning of time. With Leap of Faith, his music took on a new higher level of spiritualness that reminded me of the same type of awareness that is in Zen and in Taoism. The principles of Truth, Love, and the Innerconnectiveness is essentially the same with Kenny Loggins as with Lao Tzu. Let's take a look at Kenny Loggins music from a Zen perspective. According to Osho, "Zen is like a telegram. It believes in the very essentials. It has no nonsense around it, no rituals, no chanting, no mantras, no scriptures- just small anecdotes. If you have the right awareness, they hit you directly in the heart. It is a very condensed and crystallized teaching, but it needs the person to be prepared for it. And the only preparation is meditative awareness. Zen and the Tao are very fragmentary, like telegrams, urgent, immediate, not giving you any explanation, but simply giving you the very essence, the perfume of thousand of flowers. You just have to be alert enough to absorb them. I'm trying to give a context, the right background, because I am talking to people who are not born in the Zen-Taoist tradition." Examples of these "telegrams" are throughout the lyrics of Loggins music. Like "Conviction of the Heart," this is a song that I believe that Lao Tzu could have written if he were alive today. This "telegram" drives home the very essence of the message with crystal clarity, "With any Conviction of the Heart, One with the earth, with the sky, One with everything in life, I believe that we'll survive, If we only try..."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Taoist Teachings From the Book of Lieh Tzu Translated From the Chinese, With Introduction and Notes Condensed into a single phrase, the injunction of Lao Tzu to mankind is, Follow Nature. This Is a good practical equivalent for the Chinese expression, Get hold of Tao, although Tao does not exactly correspond to the word Nature, as Ordinarily used by us to denote the sum of phenomena in this ever-changing universe. It seems to me, however, that the conception of Tao must have been reached, originally, through this channel. Lao Tzii, interpreting the plain facts of Nature before his eyes, concludes that behind her manifold workings there exists an ultimate Reality which in its essence is unfathom able and unknowable, yet manifests itself in laws of unfailing regularity. To this Essential Princi ple, this Power underlying the sensible phenomena of Nature, he gives, tentatively and with hesita tion, the name of Tao, the Way, though fully realising the inadequacy of any name to express the idea of that which is beyond all power of comprehension. Book excerpt: I've been reading the book of Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu since I was young, didn't pursue to understand but just get more familiar with them. Since the sixth yearof Republic of China I went to Guangdong, and read Platform Sutra faithfully, and Iread the Taoism and Confucius part of Master Hanshan's writing, read them over andover, to find out the main point in these philosophies; Confucianism build their wordsbecause they follow the trend of history, Taoism build their words because theycountercurrent the trend of history, Buddhism build their words because theysuperious the trend of history. Their ways are different, but they all tries to savepeople and world. We could save Buddhism for later to talk about; and we can seeConfucianism follows the trend as one side, meanwhile Taoism countercurrent thetrend as the other side, so that they continence and complement each other. Therefore that brings me up the interest of explaining Lao Tzu, so I read andtook notes while reading. While doing that I also read a lot explanations from ancientpeople, and copy down the opinion while I agree on them, I have done it for thirtyyears, though I can't confidently say that I really know about Tao, but I want to showmy works to the world. While I was reading Master Hanshan, I found he states: I read Lao Tzu since Iwas young, though the book is written in old language and it's understand, but hestudy very hard for it, and get something out of it, and afterwards his students askhim to annotate the book, he doesn't start to write until he really confident that heunderstands it, even there is one word he's hesitate about the meaning, he wouldn'twrite down what he got, and he did this for fifteen years that started when he wasforty-seven years old, and finished it when he was sixty-two years old. So it eventakes master fifteen years to study hard for getting Tao, much less people like me?I want to combine Lao Tzu and Confucius theories, make them stand out inthis world again. Elaborate the Nature of the world and bring happiness to the society, hope people have the same wishes could research with me in the future.
