Book Synopsis The Origin of Paul's Gospel by : Seyoon Kim
Download or read book The Origin of Paul's Gospel written by Seyoon Kim and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In answer to Pauline scholarship that tends to explain the origin of Paul's gospel in Palestinian Judaism, Hellenistic Judaism, mystery cults, or Gnosticism, Seyoon Kim here argues that the origin lies in Paul's own testimony that he received the gospel from the revelation of Jesus Christ on the Damascus road. Only when this insistence of Paul is taken seriously, says Kim, can we really understand Paul and his theology. Kim begins his investigation of Paul's interpretation of the Damascus event by examining Paul's Rabbinic background. He then takes a more detailed look at just what occurred on the Damascus road, and follows this with a thorough discussion of Paul's gospel--the revelation, its Christology, and its soteriology--keeping in mind at all times how it relates to the Damascus event.
Download or read book Ecce homo! written by Paul T. d' Holbach and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-07-31 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecce homo!, evidently the first published "Life of Jesus", appeared anonymously in 1770. The text, by the atheist Baron d'Holbach, presents events contained in the gospels from a rationalist, free-thinking point of view. In order to "demystify" the scriptures, d'Holbach depicts Jesus as a normal human being, who had a normal birth, whose miracles were staged, in short who was an unrealistic visionary. This represented a vehement attack on the Bible, Christian dogma and morality, and all aspects of Christian institutions.

Download or read book I Am He written by Catrin H. Williams and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2000 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Testament scholars often claim that the interpretative key to Jesus' pronouncement of the words ego eimi in the Gospel of John lies in the use of this phrase in the Septuagint of Isaiah to render the Hebrew expression 'ani hu' . While previous studies have paid particular attention to the New Testament usage of ego eimi, Catrin H. Williams sets this evidence within a broader framework by offering a detailed analysis of the interpretation of 'ani hu' in biblical and Jewish traditions. She examines the role of 'ani hu' as a succinct expression of God's claim to exclusiveness in the Song of Moses and the poetry of Deutero-Isaiah, and attempts to reconstruct its later interpretative history from the substantial body of evidence preserved in the Aramaic Targumim and several midrashic traditions. Biblical 'ani hu' declarations are cited by rabbinic authorities as proof-texts against a variety of heretical claims, particularly the 'two powers' heresy, but new 'ani hu' formulations, not necessarily confined to divine speeches, are also attested. In the concluding chapters Catrin H. Williams considers the role of 'ani hu' when seeking to interpret Jesus' utterance of the words ego eimi in Synoptic and Johannine traditions.

Book Synopsis Exegesis at Qumran by : George J. Brooke
Download or read book Exegesis at Qumran written by George J. Brooke and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1985-01-01 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive analysis of the text 4Q Florilegium must begin with the acknowledgement that the text is fragmented in nature and alludes to others through quotations. With this acknowledgement, Brooke moves on to address the relevant contextual aspects of the text. What becomes clear is this: without appreciation of exegetical devices and techniques at use in early Judaism, any analysis of 4QFlor is as fragmentary as the text itself. Brooke's thorough and precise methodology for working through the text via context makes this book the go-to work on 4Q Florilegium.
