It was Nancy's sixteenth birthday and the Colonel gave a mighty party for her at Holly Hall. That evening the Colonel asked me to carry a load of oysters for him across the Bay to Annapolis in my bugeye on the morrow, and Nancy begged to go along. In themselves these were small matters, but from them all the rest followed. Holly Hall, our neighbor, was one of the larger plantations on the Neck. It sprawled across the widest part, from Chesa peake Bay on the west to the coves and inlets that notched the shore of Harris's Creek on the east. From north to south it was more than 3 miles long, and was split neatly down the middle by the oyster-shell road that crossed the Neck. West of the road the great fields where Colonel Savage raised his corn and tobacco and melons ran far down to the Bay. {to the east a considerable stand of the virgin forest remained, and the little clearings here and there among the trees were used for the kitchen gardens and for pasture for his blooded horses and purebred cattle and sheep and swine and fowl. At the same time, it is, perhaps, due to myself to say that this book is the issue of considerable reading and of my life-long admiration of that most beautiful and sentient expression of the handiwork of man - the sailing-ship. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sailing Ships: The Story of Their Development From the Earliest Times to the Present Day I trust that both the yachtsman and sailorman will find in these pages something of the same exciting pleasure which has been mine in tracing the course of the evolutions through which their ships have passed. Those whose work or amusement it is to acquaint themselves with the sailing ship and her ways, and for lack of time and Opportunity are unable to seek out the noble pedigree of what Ruskin truly described as one of the loveliest things man ever made, and one of the noblest, may care to learn what were the changing conditions which combined to bring about such a highly complex creature as the modern sailing ship. Perhaps at some time when handling a rope, a spar, a tiller or a sail, they may have won dered how it all began; what were the origins of all those various parts of a ships furniture why some essential portions have scarcely changed; and how other portions are the outcome of time. Experiment, and science. I hope that to neither the amateur nor the professional sailor I shall seem impertinent if I have attempted to tell them something about their ship which they did not know before. But if, on the other hand, I shall have succeeded in increasing their love for the sailing-ship by outlining her career, I trust that this may be allowed to counterbalance the defects which, in a subject of so vast a scope, are hardly to be avoided in spite of considerable care and the generous assistance of many kind friends. Finally, I make my appeal to the younger generation, to whom ships and the sea have in all times suggested so much that is bound up with adventure and brave deeds. The present moment sees us at a stage in the history of ships when the Royal Navy as a whole, and the Merchant Service almost entirely, have no longer any convenience for sail. There is a dire need in the latter for both officers and men, whilst on shore the conditions of employment are exactly the reverse. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Ship of Solace I DO not intend to write a treatise on the sea and sailing-ships; I could not if I would, for I have too little of that definite knowledge which goes to the compiling of such things besides, it is always difficult in any case to be definite about what one feels very deeply, or to have a precise knowledge regarding anything which is a complete joy, a realization of some unuttered and but half under stood desire of an entire lifetime. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ocean Life in the Old Sailing Ship Days: From Forecastle to Quarter-Deck; With 29 Illustrations From Photographs "Captain, why don't you write a book?" This question has been often asked me when relating some tale of adventure or humorous anecdote of my sea life. "For the reason that I know nothing of book writing," I have replied. "A school experience of seventy years ago, cut short at the age of twelve years, was not likely to leave a boy, however bright, with a high order of literary attainment." But, as years rolled on, after giving up the sea as a profession, I concluded to jot down from memory my quarter-century's sea experience. The characters are from life, the scenes and incidents as they appeared to me at the time, in a story of a New England boy's career from the age of twelve to thirty-seven. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient and Modern Ships, Vol. 1: Wooden Sailing-Ships A museum relating to Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding is of the utmost interest to the people of Great Britain, on account of the importance to them of everything that bears on the carrying of their commerce. Every Englishman knows, in a general way, that the commerce of the British Empire is more extensive than that of any other state in the world, and that the British sea-going mercantile marine compares favour ably in point of size even with that of all the other countries of the world put together; but few are probably aware of the immense importance to us of these fleets of trading ships, and of the great part which they play in the maintenance of the prosperity of these isles. The shipping industry ranks, after agriculture, as the largest of our national commercial pursuits. There is more capital locked up in it, and more hands are employed in the navigation and construction of Ships, their engines and fittings, than in any other trade of the country excepting the tillage of the soil. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Colonial Clippers IN this book I have attempted to give some account of the beautiful sailing ships which played so great a part in the development of the great British Dominions under the Southern Cross. It is written specially for the officers and seamen of our Mercantile Marine, and I have endeavoured to avoid such a criticism as the following Heaps about other ships, but my old barkey was one of the fastest and best known of them all and he dismisses her with a line or two. I have made rather a point of giving passage records, as they are an everlasting theme of interest when sea men get together and yarn about old ships. The memory is notoriously unreliable where sailing records are concerned, so I have been most careful to check these from logbooks and Captains' reports. Even Lloyd's I have found to be out by a day or two on occasions. A great deal of my material has. Been gathered bit by bit through the past 25 or 30 years. Alas! Many of the old timers, who so kindly lent me abstract logs and wrote me interesting letters, have now passed away. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fair Winds and Foul: A Narrative of Daily Life Aboard an American Clipper Ship A period in the commerce of the United States remains unrecorded except in the official annals. It is a most important period because it records the pioneer develop ment of the deep sea trading that today places this country so high in active competition with the open markets of the world. Prior to 1866 the Packet Ships carried passengers and merchandise from port to port on the Atlantic Ocean. A few years later the Clipper Ship Service was started; these sailing ships were specially built and rigged for speed and they followed the deep sea routes between the Atlantic ports, the East Indies, China and California and the seaboard cities of South America. They operated until about the year 1884, when the lower wages of Great Britain and Germany made competition too keen for them to survive. Just following this period the trans continental railroads were developed to transport freight to the west coast, and a little later the steam vessel became a factor in the oceanic trade. Book excerpt: Excerpt from America and the Atlantic It must not be supposed that the true sailing ship was the first type of craft to use sails of any kind; for ample evidence exists to show that vessels in the remotest periods of history were equipped with sails of a sort. But these were only eat and set in such a way as to be useful in a fair wind, wherein lay the whole vital difference. Unless the wind was blow. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Triumph of the Tramp Ship In "The Sea Traders," to which this volume is a companion, an attempt was made to show by the life stories of typical merchant adventurers how our mercantile marine has been built up by the initiative, courage and foresight of individual pioneers who have never wanted support from the finest seamen who have ever sailed the seas. In the present volume the purpose has been to give the history, from the earliest dawn of civilization, of the tramp, or cargo-carrying, ship, which has been the conspicuous agent in making the resources of the world generally available to mankind.
