Book excerpt: Professor Nicholas claims to be a man of science, but that might change after he and his wife take their five adopted children (A.J., Adam, Rachel, Allison and Cinnamon) on a trip into outer-space. The space traveler’s journey takes them to two distant planets. One of the planets is yellow and the other one looks much like Earth. The five children and Mrs. Nicholas can’t explain it, but they feel strangely drawn to the yellow planet. To their amazement the yellow planet draws their ship the Star Clipper towards it. After landing on that yellow planet, the Professor, his wife and children are soon caught up in an adventure. Part of this adventure takes place on the yellow planet which they learn is named Willow Weath. The other part of their adventure leads them to the earth-like planet. It is known as Tellus. Both planets are involved in a crisis. Nomis, the Head Servant on Willow Weath, is the one who sends the visitors and three helpers (Brandon, Anissa and Ann) to Tellus. While the adventurers are there, they find out just how serious the situation is. During their time on Tellus the travelers out run the agents of the evil Queen Ragnus onboard the submarine Dawn Star. The Nicholas’ then return to Willow Weath where they and the three helpers set out on a quest. Along the way they learn how the Trio: Sum, Crio and The Rider on the Clouds are always with them. However, as the family proceeds down the trail a foul being known as Mr. Furis tries his best to convince them otherwise. While on Willow Weath the adventurers stay in a tree castle. They also travel through an enchanted forest, a quarrelsome village, a dreary desert, a dark terrifying valley, fight a fierce battle, and climb a lofty peak. Along the path, the earthlings meet many people and learn many lessons. Are they the fulfillment of The Prophecy of The Seven, will they be successful in delivering the Mourning Stone to its proper home?

More than eight hundred planets have been found since then, yet none of them is anything like Earth and none could support life. Now, armed with more powerful technology, planet hunters are racing to find a true twin of Earth. Science writer Michael Lemonick has unique access to these exoplaneteers, as they call themselves, and Mirror Earth unveils their passionate quest. Unlike competitors in other races, Geoff Marcy, Bill Borucki, David Charbonneau, Sara Seager, and others actually consult and cooperate with one another. But only one will be the first to find Earth's twin. Mirror Earth tells the story of their competition.

Book excerpt: In 1995 two Swiss astronomers discovered a planet circling a star other than our Sun. This changed our perception of the Universe forever, proving that Earth and the other celestial bodies in our Solar System are not alone in outer space. Now, after a decade of exploration, more than 860 planets have been discovered, many of which are completely unlike anything else we know. Some are blacker than coal; some are bathed in molten lava; others are perpetually scoured by hurricane-force winds; some have not one sun but two that rise in the morning, and others are perpetually drowned in global oceans. But as well as strange, inhabitable lands, there is familiarity too. Some of these alien worlds are strikingly similar to planets in our Solar System. Astronomers now know of planets just like Jupiter, Neptune, Mars and Mercury orbiting stars similar to our Sun, both nearby and deep into space. Authoritatively written and fully up to date on this fast-moving area of science, The Search for the Earth's Twin will take you on a journey through the cosmos via frozen wastelands, slow-moving globes and fiery volcanic bodies, to planets that can - and just might - sustain complex life. The prospect of discovering the Earth's twin is now tantalisingly close.

Book excerpt: Building from his acclaimed anthology Tales of Two Americas, beloved writer and editor John Freeman draws together a group of our greatest writers from around the world to help us see how the environmental crisis is hitting some of the most vulnerable communities where they live. In the past five years, John Freeman, previously editor of Granta, has launched a celebrated international literary magazine, Freeman's, and compiled two acclaimed anthologies that deal with income inequality as it is experienced. In the course of this work, one major theme came up repeatedly: Climate change is making already dire inequalities much worse, devastating further the already devastated. But the problems of climate change are not restricted to those from the less developed world. Galvanized by his conversations with writers and activists around the world, Freeman engaged with some of today's most eloquent storytellers, many of whom hail from the places under the most acute stress--from the capital of Burundi to Bangkok, Thailand. The response has been extraordinary. Margaret Atwood conjures with a dys¬topian future in a remarkable poem. Lauren Groff whisks us to Florida; Edwidge Danticat to Haiti; Tahmima Anam to Bangladesh; Yasmine El Rashidi to Egypt, while Eka Kurniawan brings us to Indonesia, Chinelo Okparanta to Nigeria, and Anuradha Roy to the Himalayas in the wake of floods, dam building, and drought. This is a literary all-points bulletin of fiction, essays, poems, and reportage about the most important crisis of our times.

Book excerpt: TWO PLANETS * EIGHT STORIES * ONE TRUTH A collection of stories from our sister planet Ever since residents of Earth have been aware of other planets, they have believed that the planet Venus is uninhabitable. Deep-space analyses have revealed that Venus, though identical to Earth in size and shape, is an entirely unlivable planet. Its terrain is dusty and barren, and its surface reaches temperatures of 480° Celsius. But unknown to anyone on Earth... This information is completely wrong. Venus is home to an advanced race of scientifically-minded humanoids who have spent millennia engaged in experiments and technological discoveries. And they have more than a passing interest in their neighbor planet, Earth, because... Venusians are responsible for life on Earth. Venus itself is a planet of long days and nights. A year on Venus is made up of just under two Venus days, and its six seasons include a volcano season and a season when acid rain falls continuously. The Venusians are constantly experimenting, both on their own planet and on Earth. In Twin Earth Anthology, you will read tales of strange wild beasts, adventure, domed communities, friendship, secret experiments, and self-discovery. Written for preteens and teens, the stories in this book will delight, amaze, and provoke thought. 8 FABULOUS STORIES 50 Days of Rain -- Caitlin L. McCulloch Rescued -- Chelsea E. Book excerpt: "Early robot probes sent by Russian and American scientists had given us some tantalizing but fragmentary glimpses of the surface and atmosphere, hinting at some of the most exotic conditions seen in the solar system. Magellan showed a planet full of beautiful landscapes, some eerily familiar and some completely unexpected - a world of active volcanoes, shining mountains, and even river valleys carved by torrents of flowing lava. Venus may once have had a wet, temperate, comfortable climate, much like Earth's. What happened to turn it into a hostile, burning, acid world? Our twin has important tales to tell us regarding several of Earth's most pressing environmental problems, including ozone destruction, global warming, and acid rain. In Venus Revealed, David Grinspoon makes a compelling case for comparative planetology as an important tool for gaining knowledge that is vital for our long-term survival on our own planet. He re-examines the uniqueness of our own Earth in light of the recent Magellan findings, while also raising the provocative questions: Did a runaway greenhouse effect transform Venus into the burning oven she is today? By treating Venus as a "controlled experiment," what can we learn from her that will help us survive on Earth? Grinspoon tackles these and other long-debated questions while explaining the incredible scientific advances made possible by the Magellan space probe."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. The prologue introduces the dramatic formation of the two planets from an asteroid that crashes into the sun. Millennia later, bio-engineered humans settle and cultivate these remote, tandem worlds. The action starts when a shipment of crystals fails to arrive in-system at the Griebus Cluster spaceport. Two detectives, a fraternal twin team of sister and brother, are hired to go to the binary planets and investigate. They hear of mysterious disappearances, strange misdeeds, and find unlikely allies in their quest. Joining forces with telepathic animals, secret mutants and a naïve young aristocrat from the Stellar House of the Suns, the twins dedicate themselves to saving the lives of their new friends. The story takes us on a biplanetary investigation that finds the twins on a fastline ship, racing against time to the InterPlanetary Council in a desperate attempt to rescue the miners on Stone Planet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over half a century, scholars have laboured to show that C. S. Lewis's famed but apparently disorganised Chronicles of Narnia have an underlying symbolic coherence, pointing to such possible unifying themes as the seven sacraments, the seven deadly sins, and the seven books of Spenser's Faerie Queene. None of these explanations has won general acceptance and the structure of Narnia's symbolism has remained a mystery. Michael Ward has finally solved the enigma. In Planet Narnia he demonstrates that medieval cosmology, a subject which fascinated Lewis throughout his life, provides the imaginative key to the seven novels. Drawing on the whole range of Lewis's writings (including previously unpublished drafts of the Chronicles), Ward reveals how the Narnia stories were designed to express the characteristics of the seven medieval planets - - Jupiter, Mars, Sol, Luna, Mercury, Venus, and Saturn - - planets which Lewis described as "spiritual symbols of permanent value" and "especially worthwhile in our own generation". Using these seven symbols, Lewis secretly constructed the Chronicles so that in each book the plot-line, the ornamental details, and, most important, the portrayal of the Christ-figure of Aslan, all serve to communicate the governing planetary personality. The cosmological theme of each Chronicle is what Lewis called 'the kappa element in romance', the atmospheric essence of a story, everywhere present but nowhere explicit. The reader inhabits this atmosphere and thus imaginatively gains connaître knowledge of the spiritual character which the tale was created to embody. Planet Narnia is a ground-breaking study that will provoke a major revaluation not only of the Chronicles, but of Lewis's whole literary and theological outlook. Ward uncovers a much subtler writer and thinker than has previously been recognized, whose central interests were hiddenness, immanence, and knowledge by acquaintance.

Unless Denning and Liston, twin humans, could destroy the Aliens and get Firma moving again, Earth would some day repeat Firma's tragedy and be burned to a cinder. This story, accompanied by richly-colored illustrations, is a fanciful tale of a boy on Earth who looks to the sky and finds out he is not the only one captivated by the idea of venturing to other planets. Written to help beginning readers build their skills, and at the same time inspire them to dream about exploring our solar system, the story uses a limited vocabulary and basic sentence structure to develop confidence as a reader. Earth and Mars are presented in a way that highlights differences without presenting either planet in a negative way. Resources in the back of the book help teachers and parents find more factual information about Mars for young readers who show an interest in learning more.
