Book excerpt: Based on the true story of one of the longest-living and quietest World War I survivors, The Tale of the Anzac Tortoise is an epic tale of soldiers, nurses, sacrifice and kindness, when siblings Matthew and Marama find themselves transported back in time to the shores of Gallipoli through an encounter with a tortoise. The original tortoise who inspired the story was plucked by a wounded soldier from the battlefield and then gifted to a nurse, who brought him home to New Zealand. That nurse was the great-great-aunt of author Shona Riddell, and the tortoise remained in their family for the next 80 years!
Book Synopsis Trial of Strength by : Shona Riddell
Download or read book Trial of Strength written by Shona Riddell and published by Exisle Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world’s subantarctic islands circle the lower part of the globe below New Zealand, Australia, Africa and South America in the ‘Roaring Forties’ and ‘Furious Fifties’ latitudes. They are filled with unique plants and wildlife, constantly buffeted by lashing rain and furious gales, and surrounded by a vast, powerful ocean. New Zealand and Australian subantarctic islands in particular have a rich and fascinating human history, from the early 19th-century explorers and sealers through to modern-day conservation and adventure tourism. And yet, the subantarctic islands are often called our ‘forgotten islands’ because so few people know of their existence, despite their status since 1998 as World Heritage sites. Trial of Strength is a history book filled with compelling photos for a modern audience, and one that, for the first time, includes women’s stories as more than just a footnote. Balanced and engaging, it features classic tales of infamous shipwrecks, lesser-known stories of intrepid pioneers, as well as more recent stories of adventure tourism, conservation wins, and dramatic helicopter rescues. Written by the descendant of two 19th-century British colonial settlers who attempted to create a home for their young family in this bleak environment, Trial of Strength will leave you with an appreciation for the tenacity of the human race and the forbidding forces of nature.

Download or read book Guiding Lights written by Shona Riddell and published by Exisle Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women have a long history of keeping the lights burning, from tending ancient altar flames or bonfires to modern-day lighthouse keeping. Yet most of their stories are little-known. Guiding Lights includes true stories from around the world, chronicling the lives of the extraordinary women who mind the world’s storm-battered towers. From Hannah Sutton and her partner Grant, the two caretakers living alone on Tasmania’s wild Maatsuyker Island, to Karen Zacharuk, the keeper in charge of Cape Beale on Canada’s Vancouver Island, where bears, cougars and wolves roam, the lives of lighthouse women are not for the faint of heart. Stunning photographs from throughout history accompany accounts of the dramatic torching of Puysegur Point, one of NZ’s most inhospitable lighthouses; ‘haunted’ lighthouses in across the US and their tragic tales; lighthouse accidents and emergencies around the world; and two of the world’s most legendary lighthouse women: Ida Lewis (US) and Grace Darling (UK), who risked their lives to save others. The book also explores our dual perception of lighthouses: are they comforting and romantic beacons symbolizing hope and trust, or storm-lashed and forbidding towers with echoes of lonely, mad keepers? Whatever our perception, stories of women’s courage and dedication in minding the lights — then and now — continue to capture our imagination and inspire.

Download or read book Anzac Mascots written by Nigel Allsopp and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-01-04 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.’ – Mahatma Gandhi Animals have the power to change people’s lives. They can be loving, loyal companions that will never judge. In World War I, many Australian and New Zealand units – army, naval and air squadrons – had animal mascots. This thoroughly researched book containing a treasure trove of archival photographs shows that all types of animals served as mascots – a virtual Noah`s Ark of animals ranging from dogs and cats, rats and insects to bears and primates, birds and donkeys. Anzac Mascots explores animal mascots, both official and unofficial, that served in World War I, and aims to illustrate their purpose, how they were selected, what happened to them after the war and, finally, the far-reaching effects their prolific use had after the war. This book reveals that people alone did not win World War I; animals played a vital part. Animals, through their unwavering devotion and boundless affection, kept soldiers’ spirits high, provided a temporary link to normality and peace, and reminded what they were fighting for – home and country.
Download or read book Soldier Boy written by Anthony Hill and published by Penguin Group Australia. This book was released on 2001-04-02 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 28 June 1915, young James Martin sailed from Melbourne aboard the troopship Berrima – bound, ultimately, for Gallipoli. He was just fourteen years old. Soldier Boy is Jim's extraordinary true story, the story of a young and enthusiastic school boy who became Australia's youngest known Anzac. Four months after leaving his home country he would be numbered among the dead, just one of so many soldier boys who travelled halfway around the world for the chance of adventure. This is, however, just as much the story of Jim's mother, Amelia Martin. It is the heartbreaking tale of the mother who had to let him go, of his family who lost a son, a brother, an uncle, a friend. It is about Amelia's boy who, like so many others, just wanted to be in on the action.

Book Synopsis Currawong Manor by : Josephine Pennicott
Download or read book Currawong Manor written by Josephine Pennicott and published by Macmillan Publishers Aus.. This book was released on 2014-06-01 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currawongs appearing at the Manor in vast numbers had come to portend one thing... Death was on its way. When photographer Elizabeth Thorrington is invited to document the history of Currawong Manor for a book, she is keen to investigate a mystery from years before: the disappearance of her grandfather, the notorious artist Rupert Partridge, and the deaths of his wife, Doris, and daughter, Shalimar. For years, locals have speculated whether it was terrible tragedy or a double murder, but until now, the shocking truth of what happened at the Manor that day has remained a secret. Relocating to the manor, Elizabeth interviews Ginger Flower, one of Rupert's life models from the seventies, and Dolly Shaw, the daughter of the enigmatic 'dollmaker' who seems to have been protected over the years by the Partridge family. Elizabeth is sure the two women know what happened all those years ago, but neither will share their truths unconditionally. And in the surrounding Owlbone Woods, a haunting presence still lurks, waiting for the currawongs to gather... An evocative tale set in the spectacular Blue Mountains, Currawong Manor is a mystery of art, truth and the ripple effects of death and deception.
Download or read book Mobile Mapping written by Clancy Wilmott and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues for a theory of mobile mapping, a situated and spatial approach towards researching how everyday digital mobile media practices are bound up in global systems of knowledge and power. Drawing from literature in media studies and geography -- and the work of Michel Foucault and Doreen Massey -- it examines how geographical and historical material, social, and cultural conditions are embedded in the way in which contemporary (digital) cartographies are read, deployed, and engaged. This is explored through seventeen walking interviews in Hong Kong and Sydney, as potent discourses like cartographic reason continue to transform and weave through the world in ways that haunt mobile mapping and bring old conflicts into new media. In doing so, Mobile Mapping offers an interdisciplinary rethinking about how multiple translations of spatial knowledges between rational digital epistemologies and tacit ways of understanding space and experience might be conceptualized and researched.
