Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Systematic Study of Shipping The conditions which, in many cases, produce two freight rates for the same goods, are those which existed, before the Interstate Commerce Act was passed, conditions which the passage of the Act did not alter or change in any particular, and conditions which confront practically every railroad and shipper in the country at the present time. Plainly stated, these conditions are the demands of special interests and communities for lower rates for their shipments than are applied to the shipments of the public at large. Book excerpt: Israel Bond may seem like a simple-if-sexy salesman for Mother Margolies' Old World Chicken Soup, but when the Holy Land needs his skills - his quickness with a pun, his second-to-none semitic seduction techniques, and (if absolutely necessary) his abilities at actual espionage - then the man known by the code name Oy-Oy-7 (licensed not only to kill, but to say prayers over the corpse) is there to do what needs be done. In a land surrounded by its enemies, Oy-Oy-7 is called on to guard the nation's great benefactor, the generous but odd Lazarus Loxfinger. Is there more to Loxfinger than meets the eye? Bond aims to find out, even if doing so requires sleeping with dozens of exotic beauties! In the mid-1960s, when Playboy was serializing the adventures of the world's most famous superspy, they interspersed them with the rollicking adventures of Israel's most hilarious weapon, Israel Bond. After the book editions of what the Chicago Tribune called "probably the funniest secret agent parodies ever written" had sold over a million copies, they were allowed to fall out of print. Decades later, all four books in the Israel Bond series are now back in new editions!

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Allied Shipping Control: An Experiment in International Administration In the autumn of 1914 when the scientific study of the effects of war upon modern life passed suddenly from theory to history, the Division of Economics and History of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace proposed to adjust the programme of its researches to the new and altered problems which the War presented. The existing programme, which had been prepared as the result of a conference of economists held at Berne in 1911, and which dealt with the facts then at hand, had just begun to show the quality of its contributions; but for many reasons it could no longer be followed out. A plan was therefore drawn up at the request of the Director of the Division, in which it was proposed by means of an historical survey, to attempt to measure the economic cost of the War and the displacement which it was causing in the processes of civilization. Such an 'Economic and Social History of the World War', it was felt, if undertaken by men of judicial temper and adequate training, might ultimately, by reason of its scientific obligations to truth, furnish data for the forming of sound public opinion, and thus contribute fundamentally toward the aims of an institution dedicated to the cause of international peace. The need for such an analysis, conceived and executed in the spirit of historical research, was increasingly obvious as the War developed, releasing complex forces of national life not only for the vast process of destruction but also for the stimulation of new capacities for production. This new economic activity, which under normal conditions of peace might have been a gain to society, and the surprising capacity exhibited by the belligerent nations for enduring long and increasing loss - often while presenting the outward semblance of new prosperity - made necessary a reconsideration of the whole field of war economics. A double obligation was therefore placed upon the Division of Economics and History. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canal Tolls and American Shipping It is proposed in this book to submit to an impartial examination the different interpretations of the meaning of the Hay-Pauncefote Treaty. Lest the writer's long association with American shipping interests may seem to militate against a detachment from personal bias in this discussion, he deems it wise to add that he is no longer engaged in shipbuilding, nor has he any interest direct or indirect in any vessel engaged in the foreign or coasting trade of the United States. Finding many arguments advanced upon ideas gathered from hasty consideration which had not taken in both sides of the question, it was decided to try to put within these brief limits a general analysis of the Treaty's provisions, to review both sides of the controversy and to give furthermore all the state papers that show the development of the Treaty. If the reading of this book adds to the general information of the ordinary reader without time for exhaustive study and enables him to criticise with confidence the many addresses and papers on the subject I shall feel that it has served the purpose of its inspiration. Book excerpt: The Book of Dede Korkut is a collection of twelve stories set in the heroic age of the Oghuz Turks, a nomadic tribe who had journeyed westwards through Central Asia from the ninth century onwards. The stories are peopled by characters as bizarre as they are unforgettable: Crazy Karchar, whose unpredictability requires an army of fleas to manage it; Kazan, who cheerfully pretends to necrophilia in order to escape from prison; the monster Goggle-eye; and the heroine Chichek, who shoots, races on horseback and wrestles her lover. Geoffrey Lewis's classic translation retains the odd and oddly appealing style of the stories, with their mixture of the colloquial, the poetic and the dignified, and magnificently conveys the way in which they bring to life a wild society and its inhabitants. This edition also includes an introduction, a map and explanatory notes.
