Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The System of Infants Schools Such considerations seldom present them selves to the mind of the. Parent of a poor family. The great and almost the sole aim of the mother, to whom the, infancy of life is ne cessarily entrusted, is to keep the child out of the way of bodily injury, and to secure, by every means, immediate submission to her com mands. The authority which is thus preserved, is principally that of 'the passions. It oscillates between anger and indulgence: or, when neither the one nor the other of these may be employed, it leaves the infant uncontrolled, to adopt any mode of feeling or action, which the natural disposition may give life to, or circumstances suggest. When the parent is weary of the trouble which thus devolves upon her. She seeks relief, by sending her infant children to the re sidence of a dame, who is contented, for a small remuneration, to hold a contest with the passions of the young, and, by whatever means. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Lecture on the Infant School System of Education, and the Extent to Which It May Be Advantageously Applied to All Primary Schools That the result, in this case, would be highly advantageous, is a point which needs no proof to those who have ever visited an infant school, and observed the intelligence, the cheerful ness, and the infantine innocence and goodness which they cherish, even when taught in a very imperfect and mechan ical way. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Infant School: Its Principles and Methods That there is need for a book dealing with the special problems of the Infant School, the writer is strongly convinced. There are two reasons which seem to require that an attempt should be made to deal with these problems at present. In the first place, the Infant School is dealt with in too summary a fashion in most books on School Method, and the importance of its work is by no means adequately represented. In the second place, the general plan on which most School Management text-books are based, that of the Curriculum or subjects of study, is not a plan suited to a discussion of Infant School Management. In the Infant School the central fact for the teacher is not the Curriculum but the Pupil. This, of course, is true of all schools, but its truth is most evident at the initial stages of education. Hence in this book an attempt has been made to discuss education from the central standpoint - the child to be educated. The writer is convinced that this is the only scientific basis for education, and that from this basis must be deduced alike the curriculum and the method. Apart from this basis, education becomes merely an empirical system of rules and traditions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Infant Schools Their History and Theory Though the Infant School was established only recently, Since after all Time's dial-plate Marks cent'ries with the minute finger, its importance as an institution is now universally admitted. The history of its evolution ought, therefore, to interest all teachers, and the theory underlying its methods ought to interest all teachers of the young. For any one who undertakes the work of education, professional skill is essential, but this may happen to exist along with entire ignorance of both history and theory. Still, the art is most likely to be correct which is taught by history to avoid the mistakes of the past and by theory to conform to the laws of Nature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Infant Education From Two to Six Years of Age: Applicable to the Infant School and the Nursery The following work, although necessarily entering into the details of an Infant School, will not he duly appreciated if it shall he mistaken for an Infant School Book exclusively. With the exception of a few matters of Infant School arrangement, the whole volume may he used to train even a single child in a nursery, under the care of a judicious mother or governess. This will at once appear, when it is considered that the First Section contains the general principle of Infant Training, - the Second describes the Apparatus, which will he found as useful in the nursery as in the Infant School, - the Third, with the exception of classification and monitors, arranges the instruction of a week, which a mother or governess may, if she pleases, adopt in private tuition, besides embodying the requisite intellectual lessons, - and the Fourth presents those moral lessons which every child requires, whether alone or in school. Treats on the subject-matter of instruction in early school-education. This is not arbitrary or conventional, but necessary and of universal propriety. Its various com ponents stand in a determinate relation to each other; and, whether viewed individually or in this mutual relation, are evidently suggested, with respect to their time, manner, and extent, by a consideration of the child's constitution. This Part should therefore be studied with a constant reference to Part I on which its conclusions are founded. It has been considered of importance to give exa'mples of lessons under almost every department of instruction. Regarding these it may be remarked, that what has been aimed at is, not to give the very words that may be supposed to consti tute the lesson, - for the attempt to do so, though very com mon, is quite futile, - but merely to suggest an appropriate train of thought for each, and to show how the illustration should be introduced. Practical teaching cannot be learned from book, even from the most exact photography of les sons it must be learned, like any other art or profession, by imitation of good models and by practice under the eye of a master. Part III. Exhibits those features of Teaching and Manage ment which are of general application in early school-edu cation. School-management is particularly dwelt on, in respect that it is frequently overlooked, and undue promin ence given to the mere act of teaching, which yet bears rather on the intellectual than on the moral well-being of the school. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of the System of Primary Instruction: Pursued in the Model Schools of the British and Foreign School Society The following pages present an outline of the System of primary instruction pursued in the Model Schools of the British and Foreign School Society, and now commonly denominated the British System. It is the result of many successive improvements on the original plan of Joseph Lancaster, in whose active zeal for the instruction of youth of all denominations, this Institution had its origin. The System in all its details is now presented to the public in as perfect a state as possible; but as the art of primary instruction affords ample scope for the exercise of ingenuity and skill, and as many able minds have of late years been devoted to its improvement, no anxiety is felt authoritatively to dictate every minute arrangement in the management of a school. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher's Manual for Infant Schools and Preparatory Classes The Infant Model and Training School was established by the Commissioners of National Education, in March, 1838; and was arranged and organized under the immediate superintendance of Mr. Wilderspin. During the fourteen years that it has been in operation, the want of some treatise on the methods of instruction pursued, for the guidance of teachers trained in the establishment, has been much felt. To supply this deficiency, the writer, as master of the school, has been authorized by the Commissioners to prepare the following pages. They contain as much of the theory and practice of teaching as is needed for the proper management of Infant Schools; and the same mode of training, lessons, and apparatus, are equally applicable to the junior classes in male and female schools; so that. where, from local causes, Infant Schools may not yet have been established, preparatory classes taught on the same principles may be beneficially formed in such schools as already exist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Instruction for Infants' Schools: With an Engraved Sketch of the Area of an Infants' School Room and Play Ground, of the Abacus, of a Scheme of Instruction, and the Tables of Numbers The following Treatise is, as it professes to be, a Manual of Instruction for Infants' Schools. The reader, however, is requested to bear in mind, that a treatise of this character must involve many of the peculiarities which necessarily belong to an establishment, proposing to itself the instruction of infants, from the first dawn of reason, ' and that it does not contain a course of instruc tion, which the teacher may adopt without further anxiety of mind. Concerning the lessons which are placed before the reader in the following Manual, it is necessary to remark, that they are not to be regarded as forming distinct sub jects of instruction, but as, severally, integral parts of a system. The Manual contains, in separate systems, the mode of arranging an Infants' School; the mode of teach. Ing the Art of Reading; the mode of Teaching the Art of Arithmetic; the mode of Teaching the Art of Writing; and, in the last place, a course of Oral Instruction. The lessons may, perhaps, appear unimportant, when indivi dually considered; but if any one is omitted in its place and order, the omission will be found to have destroyed the unity of the system to which it belonged. Book excerpt: Excerpt from State Education at Home and Abroad A democratic system of education gives every child free access to a school under public control; it links the primary to the secondary and technical schools, and these in turn to the Universities; to a talented boy or girl it offers an Open course from Kindergarten to College. England possesses no such ordered scheme. Even her primary schools, the sole class to which she has given tardy and grumbling attention, are not adapted to form the base of a national system.
