These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside The Syrian Christ: Look inside the book: The need of the Western readers of the Bible is, in my judgment, to enter sympathetically and intelligently into the atmosphere in which the books of the Scriptures first took form: to have real intellectual, as well as spiritual, fellowship with those Orientals who sought {vii} earnestly in their own way to give tangible form to those great spiritual truths which have been, and ever shall be, humanity's most precious heritage. ...Matthew's Gospel, the twentieth verse, it is said of Joseph, 'But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. ...Either that a sum of {17} money be 'given to the saint' upon the advent of the child, or that the child be carried to the same sanctuary on another zeara with gifts, and so forth, or that his hair will not be cut until he is seven years old, and then cut for the first time before the image of his patron saint at the shrine, or some other act of pious fulfillment.

He depended for light largely on the talk of the Syrians themselves. Still, his Christian Researches in Asia, ' which seldom failed to communicate a gleam of his own enthusiasm to his followers, became the chief guide of a band of writers, who, it must be added, never moved out of traditional grooves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the New Testament Canon in the Syrian Church The study of the relation of the various documents which form the material of the dissertation has something fascinating, when the religious impulses are seen at work. The Syrians were no great literary people, but they were aglow for Christ. The throbbing of their passionate love for the Savior, which distinguishes them later on, may be felt here already in the various attempts which they made to translate his gospel into their own language. This recompenses us in a certain sense for the scanty information which we have of the beginning of Christianity in Syria. Three translations of the gospels, made at pretty nearly the same time, evidence the strength of the Christian life at the very beginning. It is important that this religious element be not overlooked. I count myself happy that my teacher, Professor Gottheil, has allowed me to take this subject for my dissertation, and that he has always directed my attention to matters of special interest for a theological student. It is due to this that I could combine my theological with my oriental studies. I want to thank him most heartily for his teaching and the kind interest he has always taken in my work. I am impelled also to thank my teacher, Professor McGiffert. To him I owe my training in historical criticism; he suggested the theme to me, and in his seminar the thesis was first read. His kind interest has never been wanting. This dissertation was finished in the spring of last year; therefore the newer publications could not be consulted. They would, however, have modified none of the results. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Researches in Syria and the Holy Land in 1823 and 1824: In Furtherance of the Objects of the Church Missionary Society It is, however, fully to be home in mind, that such a System of Research forms only a part - a small, and continually decreasing part, of the work of a Missionary. Enough has, indeed, been already effected, to open an introduction to immediate and important labours. The various Christian Societies of our own Country, of the Continent, and of America would probably all of them concur in this judgment, and many of them are acting upon it. But the Spirit and the measures of all need a vast enlargemwt. It is high time for the faithful mem bers of Christ to be instant in their supplications to Him, who is the great Head over all things to the Church - that He would vouchsafe to pour out the gift of His Holy Spirit more abundantly than ever, preparing all the Nations by a feeling of anxious ex pectation of some great event, and at the same time sending forth a numerous company of Evangelists to visit all the dark places of the Earth in the fulness 'of the blessing of the Gospel of Christ. 73. Having lived many years in the land in which the story is laid, the writer has not had his eyes diverted from men by the easier study of their manners and customs. He recog nizes that a nation is no stronger or purer than its citizens, and in the story of Habeeb we are told that on Syrian soil and in the somewhat stifling atmosphere of Turkish suspicion and intrigue the most perfect and beautiful flower of simple Christian faith and character can strike its roots One who has been in Syria and who has passed over the road from Beirut to Sidon cannot help but picture the scene as illustrative of the central thought of the book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and the Britons Born in Syria, Spending his early manhood in Galilee, his maturer life in and near Jerusalem, and his declining years in countries bordering the Black Sea, the Apostle Peter Should be known in history only by the title of apostle TO asia. Tradi tion has cast such a glamour over his ministry, that his name in our day is associated mainly with Rome and the Romans. By reason of this strange transplanting of facts from the East to the West, great diversities have arisen among Christian com munities, and the future will be a repetition of the past, unless coming generations are willing to turn the search-lights of truth squarely upon the important events that transpired between the years A. D. 33 and A. D. 150. Once disclose the fact that actually no foundation exists for a claim to preeminence, and you remove from among Christians one of the most potent causes of disagreement, and thus in large measure Open the way for true fellowship. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office HE object which led to the enterprise of this subject was essentially practical. Considerable outcry had been raised against the interpolation into the service by the Celebrant of parts of the Unreformed Office. The outcry interpreted this action as throwing doubt or discredit on the Office of our Church. And this interpretation is justified by the open avowals of many who are addicted to this practice. They allege defect or deficiency in our Office. Others, indeed, without such allegation or conscious admission, defend their interpolations as conducing to greater fulness or richness. The object of this work in part'is to attempt to disprove the charges of insufficiency and to show the redundancy of such interpolations. The nature of the interpolations in View has been already defined. There is no reference to any private1 intercessions or devo tions of the Celebrant, but to the direct interpolation of portions of other Offices. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Setting of the Crescent and the Rising of the Cross: Or Kamil Abdul Messiah, a Syrian Convert From Islam to Christianity It is not easy for a Mohammedan to embrace Christianity, but Kamil's history shows that when he is converted the Moslem becomes a strong and Vigorous Christian. The element of divine truth which Mohammed derived from the Old and New Testaments, and which runs like a vein of gold through that extraordinary book, the Koran, teaching the existence and attributes of God, the responsibility of man, and a final judgment, is a good foundation to build upon. Among the more distinguished Christian martyrs, the accounts of whom have happily been preserved for us, one of the earliest and most illustrious was Ignatius, Bishop of Antioch. Te have only to turn to the Acts of the Apostles to see how important a place in the early history of Christianity the great city of Antioch was. Large numbers of Christians were found there in the very first days of the Gospel.* It was here that the name of Christians T was first given to the disciples of Jesus, and the great Apostle Paul made this, the capital of Syria, his head-quarters for several years; while from thence he, with his fellow-labourers, spread the word of God through Asia Minor and Greece. The labours of St. Paul were specially addressed to the Gentiles at Antioch, but St. Peter, whose work lay principally among the J ews, also visited Antioch, and made a large number of con verts there. Ignatius, of whom we come now to speak, was well known to both these Apostles. We are told by Chrysostom that he was nursed up by the Apostles, and made partaker both of their familiar discourses and of their more secret. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ben-Hur One year after the birth of Christ, Herod the Great had died, ] and Caesar, not content with deposing his son and successor, Archelaus, struck the people of Jerusalem in a manner that touched their pride keenly. He reduced Judea to a Roman province, and annexed it to Syria. So, instead of a king ruling royally from the palace left by Herod on Mount Zion, the City fell into the hands of an officer of the second grade, who was called procurator, and who communicated with the court in Rome through the Legate of Syria, living in Antioch. TO make the hurt more painful, the procurator was not permitted to establish himself in Jerusalem; Caesarea was his seat of government.
