Book excerpt: First published in Germany in 1929, The End and the Beginning is a lively personal memoir of a vanished world and of a rebellious, high-spirited young woman's struggle to achieve independence. Born in 1883 into a distinguished and wealthy aristocratic family of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire, Hermynia Zur Muhlen spent much of her childhood travelling in Europe and North Africa with her diplomat father. After five years on her German husband's estate in czarist Russia she broke with both her family and her husband and set out on a precarious career as a professional writer committed to socialism. Besides translating many leading contemporary authors, notably Upton Sinclair, into German, she herself published an impressive number of politically engaged novels, detective stories, short stories, and children's fairy tales. Because of her outspoken opposition to National Socialism, she had to flee her native Austria in 1938 and seek refuge in England, where she died, virtually penniless, in 1951. This revised and corrected translation of Zur Muhlen's memoir - with extensive notes and an essay on the author by Lionel Gossman - will appeal especially to readers interested in women's history, the Central European aristocratic world that came to an end with the First World War, and the culture and politics of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Book excerpt: The Harlem Renaissance was an unprecedented period of vitality in the American Arts. Defined as the years between 1910 and 1927, it was the time when Harlem came alive with theater, drama, sports, dance and politics. Looking at events as diverse as the prizefight between Jack Johnson and Jim 'White Hope' Jeffries, the choreography of Aida Walker and Ethel Waters, the writing of Zora Neale Hurston and the musicals of the period, Krasner paints a vibrant portrait of those years. This was the time when the residents of northern Manhattan were leading their downtown counterparts at the vanguard of artistic ferment while at the same time playing a pivotal role in the evolution of Black nationalism. This is a thrilling piece of work by an author who has been working towards this major opus for years now. It will become a classic that will stay on the American history and theater shelves for years to come.

With a clear and logical organization, the book begins with theories and concepts and follows with in-depth coverage of OT interventions in both individual and group contexts. Case studies and models show how to apply the newest Occupational Therapy Practice Framework (OTPF) in selecting treatment strategies. Written by OT educator Nancy Carson, Psychosocial Occupational Therapy helps you understand and treat clients with mental health issues. - UNIQUE! At least two cases studies in each clinical chapter show how to apply the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework (OTPF) in determining treatment options, and one or more conceptual models address the psychosocial needs of clients. - Using the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework chapter describes how to apply the latest version of the OTPF to the practice of occupational therapy. - Balanced approach to psychosocial occupational therapy includes thorough coverage of primary diagnoses, as well as occupational and psychosocial theories, models, and approaches. - Emphasis on clinical reasoning skills provides insights on how to select treatment strategies based on the conceptual theories and models presented in the earlier chapters; the information on diagnoses also references the DSM-5. - A focus on psychosocial skills makes it easier to adjust your way of approaching a client, the nature of the therapeutic relationship, and the direction and eventual outcomes of intervention — regardless of the setting or the primary diagnosis. - Coverage of therapeutic interaction skills and group process skills shows how to provide treatment in both individual and group settings.

Book excerpt: Musical Theatre: A History is a new revised edition of a proven core text for college and secondary school students – and an insightful and accessible celebration of twenty-five centuries of great theatrical entertainment. As an educator with extensive experience in professional theatre production, author John Kenrick approaches the subject with a unique appreciation of musicals as both an art form and a business. Using anecdotes, biographical profiles, clear definitions, sample scenes and select illustrations, Kenrick focuses on landmark musicals, and on the extraordinary talents and business innovators who have helped musical theatre evolve from its roots in the dramas of ancient Athens all the way to the latest hits on Broadway and London's West End. Key improvements to the second edition: · A new foreword by Oscar Hammerstein III, a critically acclaimed historian and member of a family with deep ties to the musical theatre, is included · The 28 chapters are reformatted for the typical 14 week, 28 session academic course, as well as for a two semester, once-weekly format, making it easy for educators to plan a syllabus and reading assignments. · To make the book more interactive, each chapter includes suggested listening and reading lists, designed to help readers step beyond the printed page to experience great musicals and performers for themselves. A comprehensive guide to musical theatre as an international phenomenon, Musical Theatre: A History is an ideal textbook for university and secondary school students.
