This book was released on 2008 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although road accident deaths have halved between 1958 and 2007 whilst the number of licensed motor vehicles and vehicle mileage covered increased by 400 per cent, the current rate of 3,000 deaths and 250,000 injuries is still an unacceptably high level. Road accidents are the largest single cause of death for people between the ages of 5 and 35 in Britain, and road accidents cost our economy some £18 billion each year. The number of deaths and injuries on roads far outweighs the deaths and injuries in other transport modes, and should be viewed as a major public health problem. The Government should establish a British Road Safety Survey to track overall casualty and safety trends, and review current methods for recording road-traffic injuries. The Committee recommends a systems approach to road safety: ensuring the vehicle, the road infrastructure, regulations and driver training are designed to similar safety and performance standards. Other recommendations include: more 20 mph speed limits; a more proactive approach to determining the safety benefits of new vehicle technologies; action on young drivers - who represent a disproportionate risk to road users - and vulnerable users: motorcyclists, elderly and child pedestrians and cyclists, horse riders; a higher priority given to enforcement of drink-drive and drug-drive offences. The Committee recommends the establishment of an independent Road Safety Commission with powers to work across the whole of government, ensuring that a high priority and adequate resources are given to road safety and that all government departments and agencies give active support. The Government should also establish a road accident investigation branch, like those in aviation, rail and marine.

Book excerpt: In this second collection of short stories, Ettles offers a version of the Canadian landscape against which eccentric tales and colourful characters evoke ever-shifting perspectives on what we see and who we are. A modern working woman of 1983 looks to escape her version of nuclear family hell. A lonely vampire seeks companionship. A dysfunctional rural family harbours a white-collar criminal on the run. These and other narratives explore nuanced societal spaces of money, youth, food and fame, city and country, sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression. Throughout the forging of identity, for ourselves and for those around us, is each ephemeral, sublime, surreal (so real) moment -⎯ this is all we know.

Book excerpt: Advances in technology allow us to see the invisible: fetal heartbeats, seismic activity, cell mutations, virtual space. Yet in an age when experience is so intensely mediated by visual records, the centuries-old realization that knowledge gained through sight is inherently fallible takes on troubling new dimensions. This book considers the ways in which seeing, over time, has become the foundation for knowing (or at least for what we think we know). A. Joan Saab examines the scientific and socially constructed aspects of seeing in order to delineate a genealogy of visuality from the Renaissance to the present, demonstrating that what we see and how we see it are often historically situated and culturally constructed. Through a series of linked case studies that highlight moments of seeming disconnect between seeing and believing—hoaxes, miracles, spirit paintings, manipulated photographs, and holograms, to name just a few—she interrogates the relationship between “visions” and visuality. This focus on the strange and the wonderful in understanding changing notions of visions and visual culture is a compelling entry point into the increasingly urgent topic of technologically enhanced representations of reality. Accessibly written and thoroughly enlightening, Objects of Vision is a concise history of the connections between seeing and knowing that will appeal to students and teachers of visual studies and sensory, social, and cultural history.

Book excerpt: ""Weird Driving"" takes readers on a fascinating journey through the world's most unusual traffic laws and driving customs. This unique travel reference explores the quirky, often humorous, and sometimes baffling regulations that govern our roads across the globe. From the prohibition of driving blindfolded in Alabama to the ban on eating while driving in Cyprus, the book uncovers a wealth of strange vehicular traditions that reflect the diverse cultural, historical, and environmental factors shaping our driving experiences. The book is structured into four main sections, progressing from an introduction to weird driving laws and customs to specific examples grouped by themes, followed by an analysis of the reasons behind these rules, and concluding with their implications for international travelers. By examining the evolution of driving laws since the advent of automobiles, ""Weird Driving"" argues that traffic regulations are not merely practical safety measures but windows into the unique values and beliefs of different societies. This perspective encourages readers to view driving as a cultural phenomenon, offering insights into the complex interplay between law, culture, and technology on our roads. What sets this book apart is its blend of serious analysis and entertaining anecdotes, making it an invaluable resource for travel enthusiasts, legal professionals, and cultural studies scholars alike. With its accessible language and engaging style, ""Weird Driving"" challenges readers to think critically about the rules they follow on the road, providing a newfound appreciation for the complexities and curiosities of global driving practices.
