Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Surgery of the Diseases of the Appendix Vermiformis, and Their Complications The literature on the subject of the Appendix Vermiformis and its diseases has become so extensive that it is now quite impossible for any one without access to a large medical library, and abundance of leisure, to obtain an adequate idea of the subject. During the past few years many hundreds of communications of very varying value in this department of medicine have appeared in the medical press of the world. It has been a task of some magnitude to look through the contributions and consult the more important monographs, and we fear that even now it may appear to some that their work has not received its due recognition at our hands. We have tried to write impartially from the standpoint of the practical Surgeon, before whom a constant stream of illustrative caaes is passing. We have therefore summarized, as briefly as the importance of the subject permits, the views held by the Physician and the Pathologist, and tried to place the Surgeons view before the profession in such a way that it shall be of practical value. Further, we have included sections on Acute Abdominal Disease, Carcinoma, Tubercle and other diseases of the Appendix, Life Insurance, etc., which have not formed a place in previous publications on the subject.
