Book excerpt: Evaluations of surface treatments for adhesive bonding of Ti6Al4V were carried out using lap shear, peel and thick-thin wedge tests. Anodization to form dense oxides from 100-3000 A in thickness had little effect on bond strength or durability. Properties were governed by chemical pretreatments. Fluorine present in the anodization bath can cause oxide/alloy failures and should be avoided. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report describes the development of an improved surface treatment for titanium alloys for adhesive bonding. Numerous surface treatments including acid etch, anodize, vapor blast and combinations were investigated. The effect of hostile environments such as salt spray, high humidity and high temperature on bonded tensile lapshear (including prestress and aged) specimens was evaluated. An epoxy- novalac adhesive was utilized for 350 F ENVIRONMENTS WHILE A POLYIMIDE WAS EVALUATED AT 600 F.A combination mechanical-chemical treatment was found to offer the best surface for bonding titanium alloys. By combining a reactive solution with a conventional vapor blast, intermittent contamination or reoxidation of the cleaned titanium surface was reduced significantly. The treated titanium surfaces were examined with the scanning electron microscope and various topographies correlated to strength values of bonded specimens. Evaporation rate analysis was also utilized. No detrimental effects to the metallurgical properties of the titanium were found. There was no reduction in fatigue strength or ductility and no increase in absorbed hydrogen. (Author-PL).

A study was made to determine pretreatment effects on adhesive bond durability of titanium under severe environmental conditions of temperature, humidity, and stress. Replicate sets of Ti-6Al-4V titanium specimens were provided to aircraft manufacturers who prepared the sets using eleven different pretreatment processes. The manufacturers also bonded the specimens with the same four adhesive systems. Wedge specimens, bounded from 0.150-inch thick Ti-6Al-4V titanium were tested in a 140 F, 100% relative humidity atmosphere for a period of eight weeks. Chromic acid anodize, alkaline etch, chromate-fluoride and alkaline peroxide treatments resulted in substantially lower crack growth rates than phosphate-fluoride treatments. There was a slight difference in performance ranking of bonding pretreatments depending upon the adhesive system used. (Author)

Book excerpt: This investigation is part of a program which looks at the effects of surface treatments on surface chemistry and morphology of titanium and titanium alloys. This part considers the effect of surface treatments on the alloy titanium-6 aluminum-4 vanadium which use anodization to produce a porous oxide film. Porous anodized films on titanium alloys have shown to be advantageous for adhesive bonding and other purposes. Porosity may be achieved by increasing current density in the anodization bath by increasing the voltage, increasing the concentration of the electrolyte, increasing the temperature, or adding current carrying ions to the electrolyte. In this work, experiments are described in which each of the methods for increasing current density are accomplished. Characterization results on the surfaces of these anodized oxides are shown using scanning electron microscopy, ion scattering spectrometry, secondary ion mass spectrometry, and Auger electron spectrometry. Addition of lithium nitrate to phthalic acid electrolytes causes porosity in anodized films, but the lithium ions do not enter the oxide film.

Book excerpt: Studies were made to determine whether rutile-free, anatase-containing oxide layers on CP titanium and titanium 6-aluminum, 4- vanadium alloy, could transform to rutile- containing layers on aging. Scanning electron microscope observations and electron diffraction showed that rutile could be detected in the oxide layers on some aged specimens which had been adhesively bonded, stressed, and exposed to high ambient temperatures and relative humidities. Since these specimens had been prepared using a phosphate-fluoride treatment known to give anatase-containing layers, it appeared that the conversion of anatase to rutile could take place in adhesively bonded joints. Further, it appeared that the anatase-rutile conversion was associated with bond failure. In attempts to stabilize anatase in oxide layers against conversion to rutile, the phosphate-fluoride treatment was modified by inclusion of salts of likely stabilizing ions in various steps of the treatment. In some cases, the contents of the ions in the surface were markedly increased, and sometimes the morphology of the surface oxide layer was changed. On the basis of extended times to failure of stressed joints made using some of the modified surface treatments, it appeared that these surface treatments were beneficial. (Author-PL).

Book excerpt: Experimental research has examined surface treatment processes that can be applied to aluminium and titanium aircraft structure for adhesive bonded repairs. The research has looked at methods to simplify processes for application of bonded repairs in on-aircraft or field applications. Bond quality of adhesive joints, assessed using the wedge test configuration, suggest that surface treatments on aluminium can use abrasion in conjunction with epoxy silane or sol-gel and primer to produce high quality bonds with FM300-2K adhesive. This is an important development as it enables the removal of the grit-blasting step from the surface treatment process, which then removes problems associated with isolating grit contamination in on-aircraft applications. The quality of adhesive bonds to titanium prepared using grit-blasting and epoxy silane or sol-gel and primer is also satisfactory. The removal of the scotchbrite abrasion step from the standard method is critical in achieving satisfactory bond quality for the surface treatment of titanium. Further work is required to develop satisfactory bond quality on titanium that does not rely on the grit-blasting step.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The durability of adhesive bonds formed between titanium alloy (Ti-6A1-4V) and rubber toughened epoxy structural adhesives used for repair bonding applications was examined. Two surface treatments were studied; the grit-blast and silane method, currently employed for titanium repairs on F-111 at RAAF Amberley and the F/A-18 SRM method which uses Pasa-Jell 107, a proprietary based toxic chemical treatment Results from wedge style durability tests indicated the grit-blast and silane pre-treatment provided notably better performance than the Pasa-Jell 107 pre-treatment for epoxy bonds formed with Ti-6A1AV alloy. Addition of BR127 primer to the pre-treated surfaces did not offer substantial improvement in durability performance. The durability of titanium-epoxy adhesive bonds for the grit-blast and silane pre-treatment on titanium was inferior to the performance observed on aluminum alloys. Further research will be required to improve the performance of the grit-blast and silane treatment on titanium to levels observed for aluminium.

Book excerpt: The durability of plasma sprayed metals bonded with a polyimide or epoxy adhesive was studied. Metal adherend surfaces were prepared for adhesive bonding by plasma spraying inorganic and polymeric powders on aluminum and titanium. The plasma sprayed materials included Al2O3, AlPO4, MgO, and SiO2 on aluminum; TiO, TiSi2, MgO, and SiO2 on titanium; and polyester, epoxy, bismaleimide, and polyimide on aluminum and titanium. Durability studies used samples prepared in a wedge type durability geometry. Durability was investigated via an environmental cycle that included exposure to the conditions: low temperature -20 deg C ( -5 deg F); (160 deg C; 320 deg F) in vacuum (130 torr, 0.2 atm); and room temperature. The crack growth rate for thin coatings (25 micrometers) of Al2O3, AlPO4, SiO2 and MgO plasma sprayed on aluminum was equivalent to that for phosphoric acid anodized aluminum. The performance for titanium samples prepared with a 25 micrometers thick TiO2, TiSi2 and SiO2 plasma sprayed coatings was equivalent to that for a Turco 5578 prepared titanium surface. The systems exhibiting durability comparable to that for adherends treated using the standard solution methods, included aluminum or titanium coated with bismaleimide/cyanate ester (BMI-CE) or a bismaleimide LaRC TPl-1500 mixture bonded with an epoxy or a polyimide adhesive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal sprayed coatings were evaluated as environmentally benign pretreatments for aluminum and titanium adherends. The thermal spray process allows a wide variety of coatings to be deposited onto different substrates and, hence, the coatings can be engineered for different applications. Because there are no liquid or vapor wastes for disposal, the process has several environmental advantages to conventional treatments that use strong chemicals. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the best performing treatments exhibit an irregular, rough surface over wide dimensional scales. This roughness provides excellent opportunity for mechanical interlocking or physical bonding and allows a complex interphase to be formed as the adhesive penetrates into the coating. Wedge tests prepared using the best thermal spray coatings (titanium and, in some cases, an aluminum-polyester blend) on aluminum adherends preformed better under humid conditions than those prepared by the Forest Products Laboratory (FPL) process and similar to those prepared by the phosphoric acid anodized (PA) process for some adhesives. Bonds prepared using plasma sprayed titanium coatings on titanium perform equivalently to the best chemical treatments with failure within the adhesive for some adhesives.
