Book excerpt: Sunflowers: A Collection of Poems is a tapestry of actual daily journal entries masked in metaphors and poetry as Douglas finds his own way to get over the hurt of a lost love. To a greater sense, it serves as his personal forum, his therapy, as he reopens old wounds and takes a second look at a past love affair only to discover post mortem what love really means to him. This book is filled with his inner most intimacy, his cryptic pain and his desperate need to hold on to what he earned and lost some time ago. Somewhere along the way, he discovered how to unlock those neatly and hidden away passing thoughts and transform them into something tangible so when he takes a second look at his transcripts, he finds a person almost opposite to what he hopes to reflect in the mirror in front of him. Soon he begins to place a more granular look to the person in the mirror, realizing that love is less about fleeting passion and more about growing and evolving plural than singular. There are also subtle poems to how he finds himself in nature and where he fits into the grand scheme of things. Whether it’s a simple walk on a beach or fields of meadows he seems to carry his thoughts of love with him like lint to a pocket.

"This magnificent collection has the effect of a complete library rather than of an anthology of poetry.... A lyric quality comes through into our own language... Every page is alive with striking and wonderful things, immediately accessible." -- Publishers Weekly "Sunflower Splendor is the largest and, on the whole, best anthology of translated Chinese poems to have appeared in a Western language." -- The New York Times Book Review "This remarkably fine anthology should remain standard for a long time." -- Library Journal ..". excellent translations by divers hands. Book excerpt: Jackie Wang's magnetic and spellbinding debut collection of poetry that attempts to speak in the language of dreams. In The Sunflower, Wang follows the sunflower's many dream guises-its evolving symbolism in literature, society, and the author's own dream life using a mathopoetic technique to generate poems using the Fibonacci sequence (a pattern found in the seed spirals of sunflower). The Sunflower Cast a Spell to Save Us from the Void embodies what Wang calls oneiric poetry: a poetry that attempts to speak in the language of dreams. Although dreams, in psychoanalytic discourse, have been conceptualized as a window into the unconscious, Wang's poetry emphasizes the social dimension of dreams, particularly the use of dreams to index historical trauma and social processes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book of poems illustrates the vast and varied range of issues that tug at the heart of people (women, men, and children). Depictions of good and bad relationships, innermost thoughts and harsh life experiences are laid before you. They are told in a sincere and authentic way that never flinches and forces you to remain fixed upon it. It provides snapshots of individuals, families, and their heritage. Visions are created of peoples sadness, happiness, dejection, abuse, and misuse while others describe tender love, longing, and loneliness. Reminding us strength and weakness can coexist and the lingering impact of being labeled, the author takes us on a journey that serves as a teaching tool for the young and old alike. The inner hurt, which test the strength of the soul and affect future relationships, is vivid. Race progress and the relationships that evolved provide glimpses of the past and how historical milestones pave the futures path. Within these poems, there is hidden hope and encouragement that prompts change in circumstances and perspectives of the reader, transforming life we dont talk about into stories of wisdom and inspiration.

Book excerpt: there are two ways you can read this book. whenever your heart tells you to, pick up this book, flip to a random page and let the universe give you the poem you need most. do not read in order. do not read in one go. do not read unless something inside of you is begging to. read it like a story, front to back, with as few breaks as possible. visualise each poem as a different chapter in a love story, because you should know that it absolutely is. read it like you have written it, you are alone, you are in love, you are heartbroken. read it and let yourself feel it; all of it. 20 years in the making, 'how sunflowers bloom under moonlight' is the story of isabella's journey through love, heartbreak and everything in between. her debut poetry book is split into three sections that flow into one another, letting every person who has had their heart broken, see the thoughts in their head finally written on paper. isabella's book was created to, in her own words, 'give people the comfort of knowing they are not alone in their emotions'. from relationships, to body image, to mental health, 'how sunflowers bloom under moonlight' has the sole purpose of making you giggle, cry, smile, reflect and cry a little bit more. so, keep a box of tissues close, find a quite place to read and allow yourself to feel absolutely everything.

Book excerpt: Thirty nine poems in free verse. Poetry is arguably the most personal and direct of all the arts for expressing in words, rhyme and metre the deepest emotional thoughts from the most innermost regions of the human soul. From time immemorial poets have used verse as a means of communication to share their thoughts and sentiments with their fellows but, with the constraints of mere words and punctuation, this has never been an easy undertaking and has inevitably led to the multitude of different poetic forms as poets have sought to escape the shackles which limit them. Contemporary poetry is probably the most direct form of expression and consequently they can be almost autobiographical in nature. That being the case I have pleasure in presenting this short volume of poems. This volume draws from a wide variety of literary styles, both old and new, and it is hoped that the reader will enjoy the resulting blend.

Book excerpt: This collection of poetry is a reflection on life. I created some of these from the age of 10 up to my current age; 20. I am aware that my naivety to some issues may be reflected in the meaning of some of the poems, but it is this naivety which propelled me into mastering the art of poetry and understanding how a few words can change someone’s life. I hope that this book will leave you questioning something about your life; and from that question you will find the answer. Inspirations link to Shakespeare, Duffy, Byron & Keats. These literature legends to me captivate everything there is to the art of the English language; the pronunciation of words, the ambiguity to a sentence which can catapult any emotion at any time and finally the linguistically beautiful style to which you read them. Through manipulating my emotions and views of life from a young age I feel I have been able to pen poems which are relevant and hard hitting. I find that if your own work can move you to tears or laughter; then there is a gem which needs to be discovered. This book highlights issues which the media tip-toe around; child abuse, murder, reasons for war, social mobility, ethnicity, sexuality and rape. However; this book also looks at the highs of society, love, personal wealth, joy, success and acceptance to our own faults. I am grateful to this collection even though I created them as I feel deep down they created me. The messages in the book will allow you as the reader to become inevitably the writer; possibly wanting to indulge to the point you feel this is aimed at you. Many poems in this collection have totally different styles, meanings and impacts to the last. Although this may not be considered the most consistent of reads; I have purposely created an ecliptic collection which reflects the constant changes of life. This is a somewhat biography of the evolving world as I grew in it; I strongly feel this has never been done and as I read them, I can see how I have strengthened as an individual in society. ‘The Child’ & ’My Hero’ are two of the poems I created when I was 10 years of age; the first one has always been considered as a reflection of my life; however it is the opposite. Even at that age I was able to put myself into another’s situation and saw a poem being penned which I would always look back on to draw inspiration. ‘My Hero’ was dedicated to all those who have lost their life trying to create a better world; not necessarily in the war. This book is strong minded and hard-hitting. I am very certain of myself and this is dominant in the poetry. This strength creates what others may not feel comfortable reading but deep down know that these issues exist and will carry on existing unless real action is taken. A mixture of political and emotional subjects; and sometimes both inter-twined; this book is aimed towards anyone in the general public. However, the subjects may not be apparent to everyone as some are representative of my age and not of my surroundings. Overall; I hope that the reader gets the satisfaction reading my poetry as I did writing it. The magic of poetry I feel has faded greatly within education and possibly society. I feel that the national curriculum needs to establish a better way of understanding what hundreds years of poetry has given us to date. I believe in myself as a poet and as a person; but most importantly I believe in this book as a collection of great poetry which I know will leave you wanting to read more. Thank you for taking the time to read this descriptor and I hope you enjoy the book. Yours Andrew Collins.

Taking time as an overarching structure—specifically, the twelve months of the year—Dimitrov elevates the everyday, and speaks directly to the reader as if the poem were a phone call or a text message. From the personal to the cosmos, the moon to New York City, the speaker is convinced that love is “our best invention.” Dimitrov doesn’t resist joy, even in despair. These poems are curious about who we are as people and shamelessly interested in hope.

Book excerpt: The Sunflower Project is a collection of poems that tell the story of phases of life; growing from the seed of innocence and naivety, to almost withering into nothingness with the loss of self-love and self-worth; then being revitalized by rediscovery and restoration and unfolding petals that are kissed by the sunshine of freedom, healing and the reclaiming. the sunflower project tells the story of love and loss, faithfulness and faithlessness, brokenness and abandonment, and finally - introduces the rebirth and the determination to becoming centered, whole, and victorious in existence once again.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sunflowers: A Book of Kansas Poems To the peopl'e. Of Kansas I dedicate the labor of five years; not mine alone, but that of a group of friends who have equally given of their time to this little volume. At first, my only intention was to collect the lyric verse of living Kansas writers; but as the conception grew, it seemed possible to include the work of earlier men and women who had sensed the significance of our state - and the relatives of those early authors have added their assistance to that of my other friends. Book excerpt: Poetry. "Sam Witt's poems are a rhapsody and 'crisp singing' both. The best are purest poetry--mixing beauty, the reaches of language, and an imagination equally made up of body and of grace. He speaks in all our tones. His equivalences are fresh and reveal an involved, likable world"--Carol Frost.
